fertile district north east of the Transkel and lying due scmtkofXataL It is now under the protectorate of Gape Colony The reasons for this new protectorate are obvious In the first place by estab- ¬ lishing it ve have completed the half circle of British colony which now ex-¬ tends in unbroken succession between Cape Town and Xatal thus making us virtual protectors of the whole seaboard and ports between those two points In the second place we have kept out other nations the Germans aud the Dutch for Instance who have for some cast a longing eye upon the fertile pistes of Pondoland The present Chief Paramount that is the style and title of the King of the Pondos is Umquikela a small but well made man of about fifty years of age He looks somewhat older but this is probably on account of the shocks that lie periodically gives to his const- ¬ itution by drinking to excess This monarch haslately issued a proclama ¬ tion which came into force in October of last year by which he hasdecresd that all transport between the port of wto vvuu a juiiut suu IUVJUIC1IUI SUUIUU pay a prohibitory tax of 50 a wagon This was doubtless In retaliation for the previous annexation of the port of St Johns River in 1883 contrary to Ura quikelas wishes and in defiance of a treaty made in 1844 with his predeces- sor Fakar The effect of this procla ¬ mation has been to stop the importa- ¬ tion of goods at St Johns River settle- ¬ ment which extends for about twenty miles on the northeast bank of St Johns River The Pondos arc a rich nation so far as cattle is concerned and their country allows them to grow mealies and corn and tobacco in profusion without much trouble and labor Pondoland is very mountainous and at the same time extremely ell watered The sea shore is covered with brush and forest The principal trade of the country enters Pondoland across the Hiver Umrnmvuna from Natal or by way of Umtata from King Williams Town through Tembuland which lies immediately southeast The exports of Pondoland are principally hides horn aud cattle The traders of the country have been hitherto outlaws and other adventurous persons who have chosen to reside beyond British jurisdiction In many cases they have exercised a wise discretion The Pondo men lead very lazy lives They scarcely ever do any work They leave to the women the cultivation of the mealie gardens and the hewing of Avood and drawing of water To the hoys they leave the herding of the cat ¬ tle It Is difficult to say what they do but lie and thieve and cheat anil in sufficiently formidable numbers ren ¬ dering resistance impossible attack a store carry off the goods of the unhap ¬ py storekeeper and murder him if he protests too vehemently at the loss of his blankets and rum They are an amiable race altogether Pondoland contains plants of valuable med- ¬ icinal properties and the num ¬ ber of poisons in the country is very large The Pondo does not scruple to make use of the latter when- ¬ ever occasion requires an objectionable person to be quietly removed The grass or veldt of the country Is as a rule too rich for sheep but is admira ¬ bly suited to cattle and horses which are very numerous There are very few Boers if any in the country most of the traders being British or Griqna half castes Umquikela who is half his time fuddled with drink halost his influence with the rest of the chiefs in the country Tribal wars are frequent and the power of the Paramount -Chief is but very partially recognized even iu his own neighborhood Justice is consequent perfectly out of the question there being no one to admin ister it and no one to execute it Cor London Globe Mrifrtkm I 4 -- ff tie According to a German authority there are 250 varieties of cheese more or less dstinct iu 1 have seen her tried side by side with the Short horns and some other breeds and 1 have no that hesitation whatever in saiu taking the cost of production into account the Ayrshire is the best all round dairy cowlif the British Islands The one word that comprehends the secret of managing cows to a profit is comfort Every dairyman in the land ought to remember that anything that tends to promote the discomfort of his cows no matter what tends to reduce the profit There is no escape from this The giving of milk is a maternal function and the condition of maternity is peculiarly sensitive to discomfort Hoards Dairyman A chemical analysis of Chicago ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ 6 film remains I square and press together until onty a When held up to the light white opaque spots are always to be seen These are buttons sometimes leaf shaped clasps are used with a hook and eye under each leaf another calf The dairyman can rest assured that if through being chilled his cow give less milk than usual she wll never give more until her next calv- ¬ ing time The milk machinery is very delcatc and requires close watching and the cow owner should so to speak keep n eye on the barometer and thermome ¬ ter as the Fall approaches Take no c anccs As the nights promise to be cold shelter the animal if you regard jier welfare and your own profits It is just such little neglects as are here in dented as being common that cause a large aggregate los to our farmers Ywy often we as farmer are reckless n the care of the little things aud it means pecuniary loss to us Every ¬ thing is worth savns for it is in saving A pint of that people accumulate milk is worth saving but the loss under such circumstances as we have de ¬ scribed is not a pint alone but several pints There is no animal on the farm that requires such delicate care as a milch cow She is sensitive and she is delcate We sometimes talk of hardy cows Of course hardiness is a valu able characteristic but the care that should be given to a cow should be such as that any ordinary cow would thrive under it The man who wishes a cow so hardy that she can live on nothngand stand all sorts of exposure would do much better to invest his money in cows that were not hardy than in those that were for his losses would probably tea h him after awhile to take better care of his cows and that would brt money in his pocket ¬ brous and ungainly But the modern On the contrary ateel gun is neither it is the work of art and being so is a thing of beauty It begins with what is known as the tube which is tho only portion of it that extends in an unknown mass the entire length of tho gun Thi3 tube is the foundation oJ tho structure After being forged to the required length and rough diameter it is cored and turned with the nicety of the most delicate machine It is then ready to receive what is called the jacket This is another tube of lorged steel large enough for the breech and of tho original tube to be insetted in it for about one third of the length of tho latter measuring from the breech for- ¬ ward In preparing the jacket for tho insertion of the tube tho two are so fitted that the bore of the former is a few thousandths of an inch smaller than the exterior of the latter Tho jacket is then heated to a black heat by which it is expanded sufficiently to admit the tube and its shrinkage wh lo cooling forms a cold well and pro- ¬ vides what is termed in tho technology of gun making tho re- ¬ quired initial tensions that is to say tho exertion of a constant pressure by the jacket upon the walls of the tube within It usually happens that the compression produced by tho shrinking process is so enormous as to contract the bore of the original tube under the length of the jacket sufficientlv to re- ¬ quire the boring head to be run through again in order to make it uniform After the jacket has been shrunk on the surface it is agaiu turned and pol- ¬ ished with mathematical precis on Over this again are shrunk a number of rings or hooks also of forged steel and the surface of these is agan turned and polished when the weapon is ready for rilling This process does net require a description as it is idea deal with the familiar method of grooving rilled small arms except of course that it is on a much larger scale the gun which by the having been built up way is the technical name for the above described process of jacketing and hooping now bears as striking resemblance to a largo telescope with its joints extended and is ready to receive the breech mechanism for it must bo borne in mind that all modern steel cannons properly so called are breech- ¬ loaders The first step in the develop- ¬ ment of the breech mechanism is known This consists in en- ¬ as chambering larging the powder chamber of the gun to a diameter several per cent in ex-¬ cess of the diameter of tlTo lillo bore by which device a muoh greater charge of powder is enabled to be used than ever thought of in the ordnance of the past epoch Roughly speaking the power of a modern gun is calculated in proportion as the diameter of its powder chamber exceeds that of its rifled bore relation being observed also to in- ¬ creased length by means of which com- ¬ plete combustion of the entire charge is attained After the chamber has been bored out to the proper dimensions the breech lock is fitted This is a cylinder of steel upon the periphery of which aro Theso cut heavy screw threads threads fit into the corresponding ones cut in the breach of the chamber or rather in the prolongation of the ball in tho rear of the chamber since thi3 cavty which forms the seat of tho breech lock is of less diameter than the chamber itself though somewhat larger than the diameter of the rilled bail It is usually cut just enough larger than the rilled ball to admit tho easy inscction of the projectilo which must make a mechanical fit After the completion of tho beech mechanism the gun is reaay to bo mounted on an experimental carriage for firing tests These tests are con- ¬ ducted by a fixed standard of trial charges which arc considerable heavi- ¬ er than those employed in service It will be remembered that every pece of steel used in the construction has been tested prior to being fitted bv cutting a piece off one end and ascertaining its tensile strengthi ductility aud the other qualities by actual stress in a testing machine in other words subjecting it to actual tension up to the breaking point so that the strength of tholgun may be calculated to a nicety before it is fired at all The firing tests how- ¬ ever are additionally necessary as a means of determining whether the mechanical work of putting the pieces together has been performed accurate ly Cincinnati Times ¬ ¬ ---- cracks where ants
