Terrible JjOs of Xdfe From Beast aad Reptile The accounts published from time to Um fey the government of India show¬ ing the Joss of life occasioned annually by ssake htaes and the ravages of wild Hinimwls still bear witness to a terrible mortality attributable to these scourges aad we might add afford a clear proof thai the present exertious of the govern naet of India are inadequate for the purpose The latest returns tell the truly awful tale that in the year 1883 upwards of twenty two thousand lives were lost from Hie above mentioned causes ISTor can the returns rendered by iistrict officers be considered as altogether complete or satisfactory for owing to the apathy of the natives of India sad the almost universal belief ssoag them of the decrees of fate masy oases of snake bite are never re¬ ported and altogether escape the notice f the authorities Tfcea again it should be remembered that the government returns which give the number of deaths attributable to sakes aad wild beasts only include caeee in British India leaving altogether unrecorded the mortality from the same caases large independent states such as Jeypwc Gwalior Rewah and man others Moreover the British system of keejMHg down wild beasts and noxious reptiles does not obtain in these large tracts of territory under independent Rajahs There natives are not encour-¬ aged by rewards to make the destruc ¬ tion of tigers panthers and others of tfe feMse as also cobras and other deadly snakes a genuine pursuit and naieaaw of gaining a livelihood Thus it t pass that in parse away from British jurisdiction ihejss sf fife from the above mentioned carnage shows little or no diminu ¬ tion bat remains very much as in the days of old J AaaoogthewiH animals figuring in the list as destructive to human life the tiger naturally holds a prominent place tie deaths of no fewer than nine hun ¬ dred and eighty five human beings are ladfc his charge and yet the animal if let unmolested and not provoked in yway will seldom attack human bajSgs The truth is tigers as a rule are cowards only too willing to slink away on the approach of man In former years when tigers were much mere common than they are man eaters were by nomeans rare it was in those times nothing uncommon to ear of high roads stopped large tracts of country left uncultivated vil- ¬ lages deserted and permitted to fall to rana owing to the ravages of these dreadful creatures Xow however man eaters have been nearly extermi- ¬ nated occasionally one is heard of bat almost invariably his evil deeds attract the attention of the civil officer of the district and an organized expedition Is seat in ueareh of the marauder and eventually the animal is killed either by the --rific of an English sportsman or bys- the matchlock of some local shikaree How then it will naturally be asked if man eaters are so rare does it come to pass that nearly a thousand unfortunate creatures lost their livas in a single year by tigers In the first place although man eating tigers are now fortunately rare yet there can be no doubt tlutt he tiger when suddenly come upon in hib lair or met accident¬ ally face to face when on the move will on the spur of the moment more from fear probably than anything ole strike down any one barring iiis wav and pass swiftly on Ca nalties of this kind often occur in wooded parts of the country A tigress with young is es ¬ pecially dangerous and will often furiously attack any one approaching the spot where the cubs are Again cattle keepers or gxcaXias as thev are termed in Bengal often lose their lives by courageously exposing themselves when endeavoring to rescue some one of their charges from the clutches of the destroyer At such times the tiger is especially dangerous He has probablv tasted blood and often will not surren- ¬ der his prey without a struggle Should a body of men keeping close together approach him as he crouches growling behind the bullock he has drago ecl to the ground he will sometimes slowlv and reluctantly beat a retreat but often rendered furious by a shower of sticks and stones cast at him and by the shouts of his daring assailants he charges out with flashing eye and a roar oi rage and strikes down one or more of his as¬ sailants A prevalent cause of death occasioned by snake bites etc is the almost univ ¬ ersal habit among the poorer class of natives of traveling by night during the Lot weather months It is exceptional to meet with a cobra during the day- ¬ time but after sunset reptiles sally forth in iearch of food A native generally speaking walks barefooted or wears only a low shoe which affords no pro ¬ tection 1o the ankle or leg In the dark jioss ho treads upon or touches some deadly snake is immediately bitten and probably before daylight lies a corpse by the roadside The same reckless custom of passing after sunset through jungles jnuabited by ail kinds of wild beasts is though in a less degree a con- ¬ stant source of danger frequently end¬ ing in death It has already been re snarked that the tiger if left unmolest- ¬ ed vtHI seldom interfere with man but eo6 ask for information The committee never returned Whether the captain threw em overboard or they got tired out and lay down under the piano to rest we never knew Pretty soon after tnat Lake Michigan began to act like a born fool It would rear up in front and kick up behind and such horse play on the part of a lake fifteen thousand or twenty thous- ¬ and years old wis disgusting We held another meeting but as we failed to fasten the responsibility on any particu- ¬ lar person no resolutions were passed I have always been sorry we didnt lay it to Christopher Columbus and give his memory hail Columbia Half an hour after being out it seem-¬ ed as if some one ought logo to the captain and ask him if there was any particular object in the boat behaving in such a manner A man on the wharf might be greatly amused to see a steamboat trying to stand on its head but a man aboard of her takes it more seriously There was a fat woman from Chicago among us who insisted that it was altogether irregular and be- ¬ yond endurance and she started out to tell the Captain The next time I saw her she lay under one of the tables her head jammed into a basket of huckle- ¬ berries and her feet kicking the ribs of a dving voung man Some folks might think it made a difference to a passenger which end the boat stood on but we really couldnt see any It was wlicn she rolled from side to side that we felt relief During these rolls we were pretty sure of bring ¬ ing up against a sofa instead of a piano and we could feel the difference right off We were very friendly for a mixed crowd There were some Chicago aris- ¬ tocrats aboard but they went with the rest and made no objections I saw a lumberman worth a million dollars pitch head first under a table in the society of a half breed Indian worth less than two dollars and he never raised an objection when the Indian came out on top The friendly spirit cropped out m suggestions We sug- ¬ gested lemons peppermint sassafras ammonia camphor and various other things and a man who had a pint of cod liver oil in his saehel generously offered to divide with the assemblage We passed a resolution of thanks but he had gone to rest before he could be There were the factory where the great Russian telescope was made as well is many others also famous and where work is now going on for the Lick telescope which will Tie the laigest in the world Of the two discs of glass each one yard in diameter for the Lick glass has telescope flint the been made a long time- but the crown glass although ordered five years ago was 6nly received by the Clarks in September last It was made after repeated trials and failures at an establishment near Paris the only one that could get out such a piece of work Each glass cost 25000 in the rough and they can not be finished before fall At first machinery could do a little rough grading but for months past the bare hand only has been used in apply ¬ ing Jthe polishing substance which is rough The glasses have now reached a stage Avhere the removal of the small portion of the surface in ths wrong place would ruin them They are fre- ¬ quently tested set in a circular iron frame called a cell No instruments can be Used for the test but the long experience of the Clarks has given them a judgment which is unerring The tests will be made in the model of the telescope outside the building This model is of the size of the proposed Lick telescope and is fifty seven feet long These two lenses are set sk inches apart in their iron frame has which openings to allow of the glasses being properly cleaned on each side Lenses and frame together weigh over 700 pound Whiie even thing now appears to be perfect some slight defect in the glass that has not yet appeared or an acc- ¬ ident may render useless all the labor success ¬ ful in it And that is right But in all your calculations have you planned to have good health You look as if you thought that a foolish question but I mean it You have not planned to lose time by sickness but have you thought how you may avoid it You supposed sickness was inevitable andT that we had to put up with it when it came Oh no the most of sicknessi might be prevented if we would take the trouble to learn the causes and avoid them I presume you have not read Sir James Pagets statistics where he shows that in England and Wales as much labor is lost each year by illness of laborers as 20000000 of people could do in a week and that would be about what 400000 could do in a year and that docs not count the cripples chronic invalids or professional people or those who live on their incomes Buck says in his Hygiene that 100000 people die every year in the United States from preventable diseases and that 150000 are constantly sick from the same causes Notice he says pre- ¬ ventable Now are you going to be one of that number You will not want to be laid aside with suffering in the midst of your grandest schemes- - What will it cost you to have good health Will it compensate for the trouble Let us count the cost of keeping well First you will have to give up that dainty cigarette which you arc twirling so gracefully in your fingers for it will weaken your nerves impair your digestion dull your brain affect your eyes throat lungs and heart and waste your money Yon will have to avoid all use of wine beer and alcoholic drinks for science has proven that even the moderate drinker is degener ¬ ating physically and can not endure accident exposure or severe exer- ¬ tion as can the temperate man You will have to seek your bed at an early hour when others are beginning their rounds of gayety and rise when they are sinking to slumber You will have to avoid the luxurious fare of the epicure and live on the simple food of the philosopher- - You will have to study the laws of your body and obey them at whatever sacrifice It will require moral courage but if youve the true manliness the grit to persevere in spite of ridicule your turn to laugh will come when you in a vigorous useful maturity look upon your friends who flung health away in the service of pleasure and see them l writhing in pain or silent inthegrave Your vitality is like a sum of money put into the bank at your birth afe compound interest You can squander it in youth and enter manhood in physical bankruptcy or you can use it judiciously increase it and begin active life
