visit is nimply inexpressible for it eecms to me a season of felicitations and a Bcason of friendly greetings promising a future of union and pleasantries I am going to ask a question or two about Kentucky and am coming to one you will not cheer Why is Kentucky a laggard among other States and especially among the regenerated Southern States Why is a Slate so endowed and whose genealogy is such as to produce tho bravest and most intellectual of men and the lovliest of females not only in the Union but in the world whose racers and cattle are such that no imported stock can linger long in their glorious Blucgrass homo but it is improved why a State not only en ¬ dowed with tliebc but whose coal and other mineral resources exceed in quan tity the combination of coal and iron resources iu any State in the Union who possesses more miles of navigable rivers than any of the States why with all this added to her distinguished men and lovely women she is behind not only tho sister States wrong and in what I have seen of this conference it seems to me that its members arc asking each other What shall we do to be saved A short time ago I visited tho South was at Nashville and gazed on her fac- ¬ tories founderies and institutions of learning at Atlanta Birmingham and the other growing cities of that regener ated land JAir three weeks I lingered in the garden fields of the Union that State Florida whose growth compared with Northern States admitted to tlie Union at the sumo time though slow is yet a land of granduer The foremost among the non mineral producing States will in the future be tho land that blends the soil and climate of all lands Florida the Unions garden farms the golden tip of the South I had one regret about that visit which grew upon me I did not include Ken tucky in it u What brings you here now I hear you ask besides that invitation which by the way was enough for anybody I will answer you as I did tho people of tho South I have come gentlemen to plead with you to avail youisclvcs of the mineral resources you are full of especial ly your fuel to plead with you to nn yourselves and your posterity of the wealth lying at your feet by tho neglect of which vou have impoverished yottr selves to the profit of us people ot the North I tame to ask you why you will not make your own plows your own harrow teeth and the tens of thousands feet of wire with which you feneoyour farms Why you will let lay idle the boundless mineral wealth offered to you by a generous Providence mineral Mores of which yon possets more than any other Slate and thousands had not seen him sitico tho tragic inci- ¬ dent of the morning What could the boy mean by shunning him at such a time I1m conduct had been so strange lately that the Captain was seriously troubled by it Considerably agitated by thes o relleetions Captain Willis was about to go on deek when he heard a smart rap at the cabin door Tho mate entered in answer to his bidding he Well Mr Hardy -- any trouble said I was just coming up No particular trouble sir but somo things have happened that you ought to know Ive put the mulatto at the wheel and left Purvis to watch the deek for ten minutes till I could tell you tho Captain snfd Wait Hardy almost touching tho woolly head with You black the muzzle of his pistol fccouudrel you aro well known to us and I should servo you right by put ting a bullet straight through you Why should I not The man answered only b a stolid His grasp on the wheel look of hate relaxed and tho vessel fell off a point Keep her east by northeast or youre a dead man roared tho Cap ¬ Youre an Isle of Pines pirate tain and youvo shipped on this bark to here tako tho plunder it Purvis Mr Hardy put on tho helm again irons Tho mulatto sullenly gave up tiio holm and yielded his wrists to the Tho maro marched him shackles forward before the muzzle of his pistol and down the ladder into the forohold All the crew saw it and tlieru were some black looks but uo man dared to lift up his voice In a few moments the mate returned with the intelligence that ho had con- ¬ fined the mulatto below and had put on him heavy leg irons Captain Willis walked tho deck for half an hour with tho mate advising as to what should be done in the grave situation in which the ship was placed Every hour seemed to develop new and more imminent perils and what was yet to come no man could foresee It was finally agreed that both Cap- ¬ tain ami mate should pass the night on deck and that one or the other must be constantly awake to superintend the watch and tho mm at the wheel Ill go below again and make somo said tho Captain and preparations he proceeded to do so Could ho have known what had transpired in his cabin in his absence something like despair might well
