THURSDAY MARCH 25 1897 NUMBER 52 f 1orTJlE HKRAID i KOBE TAXES A COON HUNT 4 As I have seen KO many thrilling hunt Jog talcs in TUB HERAU I thought I i iGuhl relate one of the noon hunting experiences of my younger days just t show how near a youngster can come in to the jaws of death and yet escape At Stillwaler there in a branch known as Jurds branch and there used to b Y lots of coons there I was very fond of parti1II1rt cheice was Uncle Ben who was a grea J hunter and he had tt coon dog nrmed- I 1 Trick but because he was the best dog bt was nicknamed Drug We set tho following Saturday nigbt for the hunt and I told Uncle Ben that I would bring niy pup along for I wanted to make ii coon dog out of him and we would get I four coons that night The time cant u i and my friend Dan and I and my pup y went to Uncle Bens house early so as to ix be there on time Aunt Patsy had su- perlit ready they had coon and asked u- iki to eat with them Dan and I liked coon powerful well and we sat down and eat Pretty aoon Uncle lien said Boys dont iat too much of that coon or youll spoil1 Kill the fun but I had not bad any coo n vfor a long time I kept on eatiug and get E tog more anxious for the hunt jp Well supper over Uncle Ben got hi- rrfifiUD and ax and a pine torch and we set d out for Jurds hranch about a mile an- a half Uncle Ben told me to carry the torch and Dan took the ax We get t ithe hunting ground about dark and wanted to set the dogs off at once bu Uncle Ben stopped me and said tube that wont do wait till the coons get to stirring about Dan then said That right i Uncle Ben knows nil about hun iog coons and we must do just what he t ys We waited some time and finally Uncle lien sxid Well boys its time i to make A start if we want to catch four I coons tonight and started Brag off fora coon started my dog Carlo but he didnt go far until be came back and scolded him Uncle lien said I mustnt do that or I would spoil tho dug I should wait until Brag barked and then I we would go to him and show Carl tb I coon Brag soon barked and Unclu Den1 said Boys hes got one treed We aeon found Brag standing by a large c white oak tree looking up Be right still boys I sea him and he looks as bias Brag rtold Dan to be still and let y t Uncle Ben have a fair shout and we 1Would soon have a coon Uncle Ben 4 told me to kinder walk up the hill so a if he could seo better how to shoot I done downJfumej the coon stone dead Old Brag on the coon and I ran up with Jfthe torchand set my dog on the coon- il Ii pind made him wallow it By this time Uncle Ben came up and said Dont let Jthe dogs bruise that coon or he wont he- Mnt to eat so wo drove the dogs off cttarted for another one We didnt go far until Brag barked1 again and Dan said lies got another coon for ho barks just like before This time ho was near a poplar treetbbiggest I over saw Uncle hen said he Didnt think we could get that coon till ire cut tho tree down I laid off my giy coat took the nx and went to work to make the chips fly When I got tired I told Dan to take the ax so Uncle he could watch The tree was hollow and jre soon had it down when out jumpedjI the coon and Brag on top of him My pup ran up and as ho didnt know any thing about coons he got him by the ear Brags hold on the coon broke and the varmint grabbed Carlo anit made the fur fly I ran up to bent the coon off my dog and it jumped on me Dan thenI Utne t help me out of my trouble andII the first thing ho did was to run hisI hand into the coonH mouth The varmint fastened its teeth into Dans handI which made him holler for Uncle Beni Who came up and helped us I soon got loose but tho coon still held on to DansI band I got out my knife anti Uncl- Uen held the coon by the cars while I Jgt his throat My knife was so dull that I thought it never would cut but pretty soon the coon began to bleed and handbfeces Undo Ben then asked us if we weloth L fight to such varmints any more that night IonsIwe got there it was nearly upoup my wounds for I bad been torn up considerable by the coon Uncle Ben way the only one who got off without any scratches Aunts Patsy fixed up the coon for breakfast and how we did eat I IlIn and I and Carlo staid at Uncle hens two or three days before gothis dog Carlo have nut been on another coon hunt Dun will still hunt but I dont think he ever gut into another such scrape and let me saj hero that he 5 is one of our best hunters Well don wo both remember that night and as long as I live I will never forget Uncle Ben and Aunt Patsy Stillwatcr March 6 Rum Insloralltyp aroundHus lower the standard of morality I know some young men whom God has endowed with ean abundance of the natural elements of greatness and yet the more he bestows upon them of natures blessings the deeper they sink in the pit of immorality the nearer they approach moral dissolu glion Ul the folly the ingratitude of immoral young men They manifest it not only toward their Maker but toward themselves an delight to look and nations and kingdom and empires cast admiring glances instead they are swiftly dashing down with the pencils of intemperance vulgarity hypocrisy and falsehood the lines of a picture fit only to adorn the cobwebbed galleries of eternal infamy or the smut washed halls of the capital city of hell for demons to gaze at and the harpies of hell to laugh perpetualmgloom and tho hide of bruin Would send you the ham of the wolf but that would be asking too muchof Mr Cope the good looking shcriffof Breathitt county Kentucky Well I must tell you something of our hunt during Mr Copes short stay with us Grant Lacy Mr Cope and myself met at the house of Henry Cock rel Dinner being prepared by Mrs Cockrrll and Col Bells wife for the oc casion n kind of love feast was performed before we put our feet under table and right here Spence will you drop a tear in sympathy The whisky was so bad that we could hardly drink it at all Oh how we did wish for John Taulbre and Henry Pieratt as wo hated to see the juice strewed upon the ground Well after our appetites were satisfied upon the very best and in the nicest of style we made for the Ball prairie the home of numerous kind of game Wo placed Mr Cope near two timber and a small boy with him as company It was not long until it was understood that n large buck was coming that way When at a distance f about seventyfive yards Mr Cope with a breech loading Belgian and the boy with an air gun fired and down fell the buck It was the general opinion that the boy fired the fatal shut and that Mr Cope paid the boy to claim the shot Mr Cope was here after one flame Cockrell charged with shouting a man in Brcatbitt county Ky some twelvemonths ago lie skipped from the coun ty and had never been heard of until recently Mr Cope lit down on him in Coryell county Texas Mr Cope will venture as far to suppress crime as ever did Kit Carson or Wild Bill of the west Yell 1 am farming for daily occupa tion I am putting out 100 acres of cot ton now ready for planting If it is a dry year I will make about 20 cents per acre should there be a good season I will make 20 per acre Sometimes it rains the hardest I
