of the mountain countenance is a study The children are almost universally pretty but each added year seems to take away something that was and leaves only a blank behindThe above extract is from a letter in the Lexington Morning Herald of August 28th and was written by Mrs E V Potts who was then sojourning at Torrent Had i been penned by somo ordinar pennyaliner TilE HERALD coul have passed it in silence and con sidered the sourco But coming from a lady of Mrs Potts attain mentsa lady of ability and affa bilitywe feel it incumbent to refute the implied insult to native intellect In fact the extract iis erected of error entire except the children are almost universally pretty But alas I expression less she says Now we do no believe Mrs Potts intended to insult the people of the mountain- in this implied insult to their in tellect nor do we know what con ceived the thought However that her assertion is absolutely false and the very reverse of the facts is plain to all who have knowledge of the youth of this land Instead of being expressionless intelli gence sparkles upon the counten ances of our native children like dew drops scintillating under ani early morning sunbeam The chil dren are as quick to learn or may bo quicker than a like class in any community in the commonwealth Had Mrs Potts been present Tues day morning when Prof Cord formally opened Hazel Green academy for the present term she must have acknowledged her error in toto There was present 109 children in age from six to 18 yearsi and no person unless he or she were of that type which leaves only a blank behind could have failed to notice intellect in every countenance and that to i chunks the size of ar cJer erg when the conditions of the mountains and of the bluegrass are relatively considered For only a compara tively few years have the children of this section enjoyed educational 1I advantages and their environment tended more to evil than educa tion On the other hand the blue grass section has possessed these advantages in liberal measure for well nigh a century Yet it was only a few years since that Henry L Godsey a native of this townt and a former student of the academy captured the intercollegiate prize in oratory and followed with the Chatauqua prize James H Swango also a native and a stu dent came a year or so after an I won both of these prize contests which he supplemented by winning the interstate oratorical contest at the Worlds Fair Chicago iinI which 18 states were represented Joe Taulbee a native of the ad joining county of Morgan and anI academy student won the declam atory contest in the bluegrassI league of colleges held at Harrods burg in 1896 or97 and now standsI at the top in his class at West Point N Y Out of 20 from dif ferent parts of the state who made application for state certificates iin October 1899 only three them and they were natives o this and nearby places viz Miss Lila Kash John W Taulbee and Ova Swango j all academy students i Then Miss Minnie Day now Mrs Elza James another native and student was awarded a state cer tificate accompanied by the state superintendents letter stating that I she had attained the highest aver age ever presented from any of the 119 counties it being 90j per cent We note these cases simply to dis prove the implied mountain imbe cility in Mrs Potts letter and ii- it if were necessary could cite hundreds of instances similar to our oratorical and schoolcertificate winners In every contest where native mountain intellect has been pitted against that of other sections the mountains have won and we defy a denial Intelligent la dies and gentlemen of the world at large who have visited here from time to time have time ana again remarked in our presence See that bright face j I never saw o much intelligence expressed in countenance as I have seen here among your children And this has been universal with strangers visiting here so that Mrs Pottsi ideal must have been an isolated imbecile or she saw through a glass darkly when she wrote express ollle and only a blank behind I j yea f SAMPSONS SOLILOQUY BY SAM WILSON Ive roamed the high seas oer and oer And touched manifestations be ing shown in behalf of the goatsI are something that they have lowh since deserved and the growers have quickly grasped the opportunity F to demonstrate the merits ofr the gout and they have now almostl entirely abolished the prejudice which has so long existed against f the Angora venison as a food t Thero are more goats in this immediate vicinity than there are in any other one community there c i ranginifrom 300 to over 2000 head in each I flock The average price obtained for our mohair for a six months clipwas 23l cents per pound This is a good average and is self evident as to the grades of our goatsThere are four growers of goats s atteutiosII to the breeding of fine stock and the result during the past three years has developed some vary fine stock and for which good prices have been obtained 1 In the writers opinion there i a great future boforo the Angora goat because of its many fine points and tho valuable uses thi can be made of it on a farm The I hair from an Angora makes a fabric that rivals that of silk A good goat will produce from four to six pounds of this class of mohair Jwhich ranges in price from 25 to 40 cents per pound according to the length quality and luster of the hair The most valuable service that t can be had from an Angora goat i on a farm is in clearing brush land There is nothing that kills brushand trees quicker than th constant nibbling away of the ten c der leaves and bark which consti tute the best food for goats altho they will eat any class of food that is fed to domestic animals There is no reason in the world why the Angora venison should not bo con sidered as dainty a meat as that of the deer If the health of the animal is a criterion as to the pu rity of the meat there is no meat as pure as that of the Angora goat E H Johnson in St Louis Republic A Shocking Calamity t Lately befell a railroad laborer writes Dr A Kellott of Willford Ark His foot was badly crushed but Bucklens Arnica salve quick
