Lyle Story Saying Jett Hat Five Tree Re calved OleeacJ From the Lexington Morning Democrat l The following editorial from the CourierJournal of August 12th shows to what extent the Republii can party in Kentucky will go iin their desperate efforts by lying and falsification of records in the matter of Gov Beckhams pardon record to build up their hopeless and dishonest cause The false statements in the Chicago Inter Ocean a rabid and viscious enemy of Kentucky and the South about these matters is on a par with the misrepresentation and falsehoods published by the Republican or gnus of KentuckyStupid As illustrating the reckless methods by which the Republicans a trying to make partisan capital of the Marcum murder a recent Cyu thiana letter to the Chicago Inter Ocean is interesting Hero are sample gems from that contribution The Governor has pardoned Jett so often on the request of Judge Harpis that jt iii thought lie will do it sgui should he be convicted of this crime But the defense will do all in its pow to prevent a conviction to save the Governor from this embarrassment If Many pardons have been issued dii rectly after the indictment Curtis Jett 17 years of Age has been pardoned eight times and at least five of those pardons were issued before he was convicted The processor trying a man and conI victing him increased Judge Hargiss taxes and the taxes of many other ciliI zeus of Brenthitt county Judge Hargii being a practical man reasoned with himself that as the Governor had to pardon the man anyhow it would be better to have a pardon before the man was convicted Thus grew up n custom pe culiar to Kentucky II Past events indicate that Jett and White if they over are convicted will bo pardoned by Gov Beckham BO many times before that the Governor cnn scarcely be inconsistent enough to refuse just ono more pardon The ono grain of truth in this sheaf of lies is that Gov Becklmm has pardoned Curtis Jott just once and then James Marcum whomI Jett afterward aosassinated recom mended the pardon Of course when such manufacturers of campaign material as this nterOcean fictionist attempt to toll us what is going to happen they aro anything but impressive People who can not or will not j toll fro truth about what has already I happened are not tho people to whom wo look to toll us what is going to happen The assertion that Gov Beckham is so subservi ent to Hargis that he will grant a pardon to Jott if convictedof tfarcums murder is so absurd that it would not bo credited by oven the most stupid of tho Governors enemies He would have to be a foolas well as a knave to take such course and he is known in Ken tucky if not in Chicago to be- either If auoh prediction as that here quoted wore worth Serious attention it would bo easy to discredit it by the record of Gov Jeokham in this case for since his suggestion that Harais request the offering of a reward for Marcums murderer and ills ignoring of Har I Yf giss proposal that only 260 be offered instead of which he offeredethe limit of the law as he has shown that he is with the outraged partiesinof Hargiss rule in Breathitt bro ken and the assassins of Marcum promptdetailtion to Judge Rodwine that ho should not try Jett and White at Jackson with the other steps that Ihe has taken in his limited authority in such cases all give the Ho to slanderers of the stripe of tho InterOceans lotted writer As a matter of fact Curtis Jett was pardoned by the Governor long before the Breathitt county troubles come up on a jail seLl y fence for a misdemeanor charge after he had served a large part of 3 his term and J B Marcum was the chief petitioneer for the pllrIdon This is tho only time that Curtis Jett was ever pardoned by Gov Beckham i reThe Death Penalty A little thing It is said that on Wednesday morning Landrum wont to Stun ton and told a numbor of his friends that ho had come for the purpose of killing Tipton He was accompanied hsIof his rot atives but his finally ran upon him shortly before 4 oclock in front of the Petitt saloon al most directly in front of tho courthouse The men met face to face A few remarks wero passed between thorn when Tipton diappeared in to the saloon and almost instantly returned with a shot gun loaded with buckshot Tho sight of tho gun made Landrum go for his pis tol and both men began firing at each other simultaneously but the quicknerve of Tipton stood him well in hand and he pulled the trigger of his gun first tho entire charge striking his victim in the right oye blowing off the entire right side of his face Tipton was discharged on tho examining trial anti in the light of the above no other course was clear But another story is cur rent here and that is tho reverse For instance it is said
