wife were guests of the Day House Monday night and loft Monday morning on horseback for West Liberty An informal reception was tendered by Mr and Mrs Langley just before leaving when Mrs Langley met with and was introduced to several of our citi zone while Mr Langley renewed I his old acquaintance and also met a few new ones There was no political significance in the gath ering Democrats and Republicans alike mingling in a social way All were favorably impressed with Mrs Langley whom they thought an exceptionally and estimable social lady and when the few Democrats present learned that she espoused Democratic doctrine and is the daughter of an exDem ocratio Congressman from North Carolina their estimation of her was still further enhanced and they jocularly pointed John to the fact that a house divided against itself is sure to fall intimating his defeat However she came to his rescue by saying that she had found him a pretty good fellow and that the bond of fellowship existing between them would com pol her to espouse his cause and forget her principles for the nonce Somo of Johns political adher ents asked if he would speak here during the campaign and he said he would in September The Dem ocrats assured him that it would be a waste of breath that we had him beat etc and THE HERALD is here to say that we will make the try of our lives anyhow ONLY a week or ten days will elapse until Hazel Green Academy opens its fall term andeveryone who reads this paper is or should be interested in its success It has done and is still doing a great work for education in this section and each year enhances its useful ness to tte young men and women of this section because with the begirding of each term new fea tures are introduced and old ones improved upon Parents who have children to educate can do no bet ter than to educate them at Hazel Green Academy As an evidence of this fact look at the young men and young women who are now holding positions of trust and honor by reason of the education they received here Not only in this state will you find many thus employed but in many other states also And in point of expense it is much more reasonable than at many schools where the training is not nearly so thorough All who will look into tho matter properly will agree with us that Hazel Green Academy is to Eastern Kentucky today what Centre College was to tho state a quarter of a century ago In brief it is turning out young men and young women who are making their mark in the history of the country Write to M 0 Carter Principal Hazel Green Ky for catalogue and terms JOHN T CENTER who lives at Gosneyville is out as a candidate for the office of Assessor of Wolfe county and submits his caims to the action of the Democratic pri mary Johnny Center as he is familiary called by his friends has always been a Democrat and hard worker for the success of the party He never held an elective office but has filled several positions of trust and honor by appointment For eight years he was a deputy sheriff under his brother G T Center then sheriff and several times he acted as deputy assessor The experience thus gained with the experience he had as teacher of public schools of the county gaveIhim for the place which he seeks Besides all the practical experience thus acquired Mr Center is known to be an upright honorable gen tleman as good a citizen as any in the county The Democrats can make no mistake therefore in giving him the nomination as he has a hostof relatives to say nothing of his friends whose name is legion and wo leave him sanitarium for treatment for brain fag and nervous prostration says Mr Day Was very much pleased with his surround ings and the treatment accorded him He also told our man about town that Mr Day slept some 12 hours the afternoon and night he arrived at Torrent which is per haps three times as long as his braip has rested in possibly ten or more years at one time and his friends think this a hopeful sign in his favor Mr Day as previ ously mentioned prior to his break down a decade ego was oneof the most indefatigably energetic men in Eastern Kentucky if not in the state Indeed he devoted so much time to his business interests and that too with but very little rest that he finally broke down aud those who were acquainted with his strenuous life were surprised that it did not come sooner His power of endurance was enormous and if he can now be restored to his normal mental equipoise he will be wonderful blessing to the business interests hereabouts and especially the laboring class as he always employed many hands and thus disbursed much money In cidents herein mentioned and the fact that he is well pleased lead his friends to hope that Richard will soon be himself again a wish in which THE HERALD very heart ily joins His address is Col J T Day Oxford Ohio and his friends should write to him Death of Aunt Betty Rose Aunt Betty Rose consort of James Rose deceased who lived near Goodwins Chapel died sud denly Monday morning and just twenty minutes after her only sis ter Mrs Julia Ward reached her bedside Mrs Rose was one of the best known women in this broad land and one of the most charitable perhaps in Eastern Kentucky It is said that hover in life did she refuse to aid any one in need Briefly she was a Christian in all that the word im plies and hundreds who knew her best will mourn her as their own flesh and blood Aunt Judy Ward who is her only relative left has our sincere sympathy in this the darkest hour of her life The fu neral took place Tuesday and her remains were laid to rest in the family burying ground in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing friends An Afflicted Family Joe Catrou and daughter Miss annie of Toliver were here on Monday
