charge says the proposition is the establishment of a barge line for the big stream This Iline is not to br organized as a private concern taut a common carrier to handle the freight along the river in large quan tities Tne object of the move is to inter cs the people living in the valley of tap Mississippi in interpert naviga tion and prove to congress that the river is being utilised at its present stageThe people behind the move be live in inUroort navigation for the present as the bOlt means of secur ing from congress sufficient appro pnations to deepen the channel of enp Mississippi and its navigable tributaries We want to show to congress that we are utilising our waterways at the present stage and hope by this menu to secure large appropriations for deepening the channel and making the river navigable for larger craft said chairman IrvineMr Irvines idea of the establish ment of the barge company is to make it a common carrier It will be a corporation with stockholders at the various ports between St Louis and New Orleans He desires to arouse sufficient interest in the proposition to get each port to appoint a com mittee Co confer with committees from other ports and agree as to what system would be best and to arrange some satisfactory method in regard to beating the expense ot getting the project under way in the near future There are two good reasons why river tragic should be increased at the present lime one to shew con grill that there is a revival in the trade i and second to reduce the cost of transportation about 66 per cent which is possible even without a fourteenfoot channel The movement is being pushed by the interport navigation committee and has been agitated extensively in St Louis Manufacturing interests there the real estate exchange and other business organizations have indorsed the proposition This dele gation will come down the river from St Louis and visit all the im portant ports between that city and New Orleans They left Wednesday and should get here today or tomor row These gentlemen will present the matter to the poetic in detail Mr Irvine explained that other waterways N th in America and in foreign countries of a leas depth and else than the Mississippi are used to a much better advantage Figures show that the Ohio river sends 30000000 tons of freight annually into the Miseietippi Less than 1000000 tons are earned down the river from above Cairo On boats averaging little more than 400 tons capacity the Rhine river in Germscy annually floats more than 40000000 tons These barges navigate the English channel It is contended that a through barge ser vice from St Louis to the gulf would be of great bsneflt to every port af fected Car shortage delayed ship wont and other obstacles to Hick man would
