local fight and success usually did not come until after there had been some one or more defeats There is only one ground of oppo Everylarmer manythinkprogressivefarmer prove his farm to make it worth more money i it does not matter whether he wishes to sell It or not He tiles fences builds new barns or Improves those he has plants orchard and shrubbery puts out shade trees gels a wind mill and In two or three years has changed the whole character of the place Usually the intelligent expenditure of a thousand dollars in such improvemehts will add two thousand to the value of farmThe Is true of good roads with this difference that every dollar wisely expended upon building a permanent road one good everyday in the year will add at least five dol propertythave been built there has been at once a sharp increase in the value of farm lands which all agree Is due to the good roads The increase ranges from 10 to as high as SO percent In some cases the average be ing about 25 per centmlIf a man were to go Into any com munity to buy a farm and he found two that would suit him they were as much alike as two farms could 3well be and there teemed to be no choice between them one was located five miles west of the county seat with a good gravel or stone road leading to town 5 the other was five miles east upon an earth road everyone with any experience in such matters knows the owner of the west farm would make a strong point of anydayand trot the hones all the way The result IU he gets the preference 4 md more money for his farm andrbe will find the extra money would ti have paid his good roads tax several times over and that he made more money on the road than he did on Ills land in proportion to the cost a Good roads are a benefit In dollars and cents to everyone whether they live In town or country Besides the money benefit think of the pleasure of a good read 1 R R Giltner of Eminence Ky at the State Convention last week JItryadvanced He said that the money put In roads always pays good interest on the capital invested in more ways than one The question of how to secure the necessary funds was solved by Mrtt Glllner in the plan for a vehicle tax to make those who cause the wear and tear bear the burden of repair tocthe thoroughfares He believed that this would raise a large fund to maintain the highways Discussing the three classes of roads stone pikes gravel roads and dirt roads he illustrated the wear on them by charts also showing proper and Improper methods of drainage He said that 27000 tons of water fall on each mile of road each year In this state This increases In volume as it Is carried consequentlyserrodes more deeply oughfare He said that this water must be diverted to the side and a practical reconstruction made of I most of the Kentucky roads before much use could be made of themt I a Mr Giltner gave some directions for toad building calculated to pro n educe the best results He said to use a steam roller after dragging then road with spikes and then make aIbed with six inches of metal In the center and tour inches on the side would make a house road if roUedii than twelve inches if unrolled He recommended the use of the split road drag on the dirt roads Real Estate Thransfers Mrs P G Cunningham to J B Bradberry lots in East Hickman 700 t l Brosb I 400 Fannie Shaw to C C Chancyre r land 2000 J P Swann to J P
