They wilt un dertake anything, will promise any thine, to obtain morphine. I remem ber some years since, when I was in a drug store, young woman came in one morning and ordered a quantity of toilet goods put up, say ing that she wa from the country, and that her father, who was out do ing some trading, would call in and pay for them very soon. Among oth er things, she ordered an ounce of morphine to put up with the rest of the goods, but Grit took a large dose from one of the bottles right there. Then she weht out and never relumed, white the clerk who sold her the goods walled in vain for the father from the country, and wa for month after the butt of various jokes on hi confiding nature. I afterward found that the young lady visited a number of drug stores in town, and did the same thing; but she one day tried the game upon one drug store where, after she got the morphine, the proprietor refused to let her go until she paid for the goods. She Immediately stepped to a room ! the rear of the store add divested herself of a chemise. which she pawned for the morphine taken. Herald. down-town 1 Te Kolrrf flTphlttr. Hn Fmrftlrn Hlmmrlf. An incident a somewhat ludicrous one, too, of the fire at the Hagerstown Hotel, has been told us by one who barely escaped with his life. Ho Is a traveling man. Being suddenly awa ened that night by a bright light shin leg in his face, he discovered that the window-fram- e of hi room, on the third floor, wa one blaze of fire, and that the apartment wa rapidly filling with smoke. He at once left, he knows not how, but finally succeeded in reaching the ground by a jump from window. When safely a aecond-stor- y landed, he stood watching the work of destruction, and near by him were a group of very thinly clad females, at so gazing. While thus standing he noticed a parly of firemen hurrying by him with a bundle of feminine apparel. He immediately, with that gallantry so in keeping witli a travel ing man, hailed the men with "Look here, you fellows, give theso ladies sotue of those clothes." The reply was in an instant : All right, stranger, we'll do so; but don't you think it would be a good idea to put on a pair of spurs your- self?" The last remsrk caused him to in vestigate himself, when he found that bi whole costume was a shirt, a vest, ami a pair of gaiters, while the rest of his garments hung idly over his arm. Our friend blushed, sought a refuge, Norristown and pulled on his pants. Herald. J.WI5TER CO. LorMTlLtr, IT, i.vkk i nuicKnvns, IHJ.fTmmiCVMMf.
