This morning the startling news of the assassination of President Garfield was received here from Washington. Wc immediately telegraphed the Courier-Journa- l for particulars, and at 5:30 P. m., received the following: Louisville, July 2nd, 5:30 P. M. Editor Interior Journal : A little after 9 o'clock this morning, as President Garfield was on his way to Jersey City to meet Mrs. Garfield, and had just entered the ladies room at the depot, with Mr. Hlainc, he was, without a word of warning, shot in the right shoulder and right side by Charles J. Guittcau, who had been removed as Consulate to Marsaillcs. The assassin was immediately arrested and taken to jail. Troops were called out and the jail and White House put under heavy guard. He is much depressed. Four o'clock telegram says that he is sinking, and can live but a few hours. Great excitement all over the country, and business generally suspended. Kmmktt G. Logan. Sunday Moknino, July 3rd. The news this morning is that the President, after sinking so low that he was thought dead, rallied at I o'clock and took some nourishment. At 2 A.
