THE INTERIOR JOURNAL IVOL xxxiv STANFORD KY TUESDAY JULY 10 1906 NO 33 A GREAT COUNTRY Interesting Description of New Mex- Ico by a Former Stanford Man All rights reserved by the author SAN MARcIA NEW MEXICO July 2 Many days have dawned and nights have dimmed the earth with shadowsi k smcc 1 wrote a lino for tho I many letters coma to mo for something descriptive of New Mexico Some have been replied to and others consigned to a moro convenient season First lot me say that agriculture here save a very limited area that can be Irrigated from the very few running streams Is out of the question and ex ists chiefly on paper and In the well l filled garrets of human anatomy whoso possessors prey upon the governments liberality for appropriations and upon enthusiastic minds through irrigation schemes to dispose of worthless barren wastes There are some privations and BclfdoniaU to bo encountered and nec essarily endured here but nature In her Inherent sense of justice and equity has provided someaye many very great compcnsotlons to offset tho advantages crowning other lands The distribu tion when calmly viewed is perhaps in favor of this vast region known as Now Mexico which might more fitly bo call America I am but returned from a protracted stay In the East and never before have I been so thoroughly im pressed with the greatness both pres ent and future of this country For rest real rot of mind and body this is the one place In America whore it is to be found unalloyed for quiet repose lifo gathering force to store away randlike great storage batteries for future i demand on brain and endurance there Is not a place on thUs globe the equal of New Mexico Hero nature Is both nurse and physician A land where doctors starve anti patients thrive where Ignorance U king and freedom his kingdom whore quiet reigns and rain is a luxurywhore congeniality is unknown Mil extremes are cronies where hardships are trifles and conse quences are jokes where people are severed and communities united whero gold is n medium and not the object where idleness is popular and Industry la selfindulgence whore wealth ls com mon and poverty general where accu fmulatton is oasy and ostentation con whore caste Is unregarded and circles unfilled But this region with inviting welcome to the world and nil its treasures open to seeking visitors stands like tho lonely 1 Solomon to be visited and its glories enjoyed but moves not IU wealth or clime to wtat ful royalty or craving pkbian Tho grasses wild luxuriant nutrleiout Its scenery grand oven sublime its mineral store are peculiarly Ita own and can not be moved by trust combine or jx litical endeavor to another section of tho world It is Now Mexicos only Just bark from a trip across tho plains to San Mateo Saint Matthew Moun Itales the drive up thore a gradual as cent of about 3000 foot above this sha oody city on the Rio Grande breosoe fresh invigorating and delightful On r the way looking northward one sees tho Floating Mountain one of tho most wonderful mirages of this land of mirages It is a gront mountain seem ingly suspended between hoovon and earth can see under It far on north ward the blue sky and all around it the outlines sharply defined the clear beautiful sky of this Land of lllue Skies Looking northwestward the great Hold Mountain high above the timber line lifts it rugged sumtnltns if conscious of mountain supremacy and like a great giant sentinel towers above tho typical Western mining town of Magdalenn While east on its very foot and upward upon Its slope and craggy side Is the hdstling mining vil lago of Kelley alive with busy west ern energy and startled at regular hours with tho roar of dydamlte shooting from their imbedded veins tho rich ores of copper lead and gold Then to be seen on this drive of 30 miles away to the south some 40 miles the Palo 111M Mountain whose outlines against tho distant sky bear a most striking resem blanco to tho profile of Grover Cleve land tho Benedict Arnold of tho democratic party It stands overshadowing tho Pnlomaa Hot Springs on govern ment reservation where rheumatism and kindred ailments are absolutely eradicated in one to fivo days plunging In Its hot mud and water A great re sort for sufferers from far and near without accommodations or improve meats of any character all visitors tak ing their own supplies of tents provis ions and blankets the latter always needed in this climo at night Oh that tho vast army of rheumatics of earth had accesS to these baths And then In every direction still may bo seen the Oscuro the San Andres the Magdulena the White Mountains latter covered with snow nine months out of tho year tho Caballo Spanish for horse pronounced Cavayo and other ranges of mountains stretching their lines high up on the beautiful blue heavens Up among the mountains at Infrequent Intervals gush springs of water cold and clear and 09 per cent pure Look again away to the cast on this same 30 mile drive and see tho dis tant range 140 miles away that hides behind It the ruins of Grand Ccvcra a town whoso history and tho very ac count of its destruction Is lost to all tho divers Into archives and legends Man houses yet stand as testimony that th populace lived In fear of somo jwwerful enemy as all were built with parapets and all entrances from tho tops by means of ladders drawn up niter as cent and used for descent to the floors That tho unknown people of this village were surprised and killed is well evidenced by the fact that in exploring their skeletons were found In groups with skulls broken limbs broken men women and children nil treated alike while In some few houses as if cluster ed together for moro available resist ance the skeletons of men were fount with the same evidence of violence upon them Much search and specula tion as to who these people were and by what people surprised and killed has not brought one single proof to light nothing but the unsatisfying surmise is extant Again on this drive draw down the gaze nearer and see a great open volcanic crater with broad stretch of lava boulders spread sorno seven to 10 miles wido and about 20 miles long a black rugged rendez vous for buts serpents centipedes and tarantulas The Mexican name for this volcanic deposit is Mal Pals thriving on we come to tho San Mateo Range about 00 miles in lengthand rich in mineral almost altogether free milling gold with a small percentage ol silver admixture Tho veins of ore are all true fissure veins solid well defined and of such thickness as to not ndccssl tato tho handling of any waste or country rock Hero in the foot hills of this range in tho mining village of Koscdalc nestled in a beautiful and picturesque valley at an elevation of about 7600 feet above the sea level with mountains reaching 800 to 1000 feet above the valley where tho camp Is located Climb these mountains up past the stormy peaks that are shut up and out from their sides on and up btI yond tho clouds look down upon thoI clouds tops all purple and gold from tho sunlight above the mountain sum mits while the clouds are spraying and drenching the purple and yellow carpet of wild flowers on the hilt sides and valleys below The clouds hurriedly drift on and one has a view painted upon momorys faithful tablet that time vl olBsltudua and changes can not erase Take those scones with that of the Floating Mountains and tho thousands of shoal postured upon the plains and seen again from mountain summit in grout separate horde stretching out in straight and curved linos grazing on wild grasses and wild flowers nil under you and far below you moving steadily onward and onward like some vast army deployed for battle marching with force in front and strong reserve corps In the roar upon tho waiting lines of as groat n foe Got the rich por fume of the wild flowers spiced with the odors of spruce and pine thrown out In grateful recompense for tho re freshing shower Look well and long at the scone every minute every hour It is more Interesting moro captivating until it becomes enchanting No artist can puint tho picture no canvas no plate of kodak or camera can reproduce it no pen cnn describe it no one can comprehend nil iU beauty and grand our It is God mocking with nature the attempts of artists at the sublime I have sometimes wondered If after nil tho very Garden of Eden was not hid den away among these mountain rang es Dut if so Adam manlike in his selfish greed must have eaten tho apple seeds with tho fruit for no wild apples or anything of so domestic a aonblanco is found hero Though now and then an apron may be seen but whether of the pattern and stylo of fickle Eves I can not say but am pos itively persuaded not of tho same fab rlc nor put together by the same contrivance Tho style and fabric of hers seem to have been long since discarded though in Homo modern fashionable circles tho necessity for aprons of greater dimensions is as great as was when she established tho first apron factory Tho people here are from everywhere tho native race whose lines of kinship are lost in tho labyrinths of intermarriages for centuries girls arc married at the ago of 12 to 1C are aged at 25 are quick bright and vivacious in their teens and discontented at 20 Some termarry with Indians a few with Negroes heir annual feasts are to them great carnivals of alternating worship dancing gambling and other pasttlmes pleasifrom Naturally they shrink as Innovations upon their rights and customs shrink from all Americanisms though marriage with Is not unusual
