wholly true it is a very short story and very sad It was in 1870 11 years after the close of tho civil war I had taken the train at Louisville on that branch of tho Louisville and NashvilloRailroad which then found its terminus nt Livingston in Rock Castle county in Kentucky A lady shared my scat in tho train as far as Crab Orchard Springs She was comely and well dressed a condition not uncommon in Kentucky and withal sad oyed and in those days that too was common North and South Before we had reached Crab Orchard sho had told me her story and this is it as volt as I can recall M Sho was in Kentucky on a visit to kinsfolkat Crab Orchard Her home was on a plantation in tho Tennessee bottoms not far from tho town of Corinth in Mississippi In the days when the struggles of tho wnrcentcrcd about Corinth hnd Shiloh this planta tion was between tho Confederate and Union lines more often just inside tho latter She was a Southern woman with all tho intensity of feeling which this implied in better times and her two brothers were officers In the Con federate army Though she had no love for tho blue yet a soldier is a sol dier and a man is a man There was a lieutenant of tho Federal scouts ho nary havo been a sergeantbut that docs not matter who had charmed her Into a sort of friendliness by his bright wit and his boyish good humor Some wherdin Ohio ho claimed as his home and when stationed on tho plantation he and his men had shown a degree of consideration and courtesy not always seen among soldiers Moreover she had let him tell something of his lifo at home Ho stroke of his sister and his mother and there Were times when she almost forgot tho hated army of in vaders to which he belonged But not for long And one night for tho plan tation was between tho linesa group of Confederate officers came in and silo hoard them tell of a scheme to cutoff this Ohio squad and the young fellow in command of It They were sure that they knew how they could do IU The next day the boy rode up to the plantation again Ho brought his sis ters picture and tho mothers too and the picture of tho farmhouse in Ohio Should she put him on his guard Just a word would be enough Should she be truo to herself as a woman or should she bo true to the causo of her brothers to Mississippi to tho South And at last the problem settled itself for tho boy rode away unwarned And when after tho little skirmish they brought him back to the house again the pictures were stained with blood These pictures she still holds And this was the question she asked motho question sho has doubtless asked of many others for all this had happened 13 years before Did I do right What should I havo done What could I have done And to this question there can be no answer In love and war there is no standard code of ethics The story of war is written in tho blood of tncn and the tears of women David Star John son in Harpers Weekly How to Remain Young To continue young in health and strength do as Mrs N F
