THE INTERIOP JOURNAL IIVOL XXXVSTANFORD KY TUESDAY OCTOBER 29 1907 NO b9 Driven From Attack to Defense Candidate Willson Gets Angry From totting the paco for his aoao clato orators In attacking tho democratic record in tho administration of public affairs Augustus E Willson re publican gubernatorial candidate has been put on tho defensive within the past week responding to leading at tacks upon his own record as a lawyer and a man of truth and in making that defense ho has lost his head and now resorts in tho last days of the campaign to abuso of tho men against whom he is making a race before the intelligent voters of Kentucky Ho has been can ed and proven a falsifier within tbat- spacn of time and is unable to respond except through use of tho words in r competent and tumblobug applied to tho men who have him on the griddle and aro punishing him Whom the Gods would destroy they first make mad is nn old saying and Mr Will son is certainly mad these days Tho distinguished candidate of the republican party first sidestepped is sues of tho campaign ho has always been dodging tho real live issues when he declared in a public speech that W J Bryan of Nebraska had been paid Eroo a day to como to Kentucky and mako a speech from a special train in tho interest of Judge linger Gov Bcckham and those running with them in this campaign For this deliberate falsehood ho was quickly called by Stato Chairman Henry 0 Hincs of tho democratic committee and by the lion Urey Woodson of Owcnsboro a who was Instrumental In getting the distinguished Nebraskan to visit tho State this Fall Ills answer was that he couldnt prove a word ho had uttered in the matter nor in any way justify his insult to tho great leader of the National Democracy In attempting to respond to tho sp rious charge preferred by lion J Morgan Chinn of Mercer that ho is the hlreil attorney in Kentucky of the To bacco Trust Mr Willson has placed himself In a most ridiculous and at tho same time pitiable condition for a man seeking before tho honest and liberty loving people of Kentucky the high of lice of governor of the State First declaring that ho had been employed this trust in but a single case In tho Kentucky courts Mr Willson was forc ed by a showing of the public records to admit that he had represented ono or another branch of tho iniquitous trust in other cases He then sought to extricate himself from the position by declaring that ho had been gotten into tho second cue because of haying won a similar case just previous to ho- I filing of this second case Relying up on this explanation ho declared an other man to bo the real Kentucky lawyer for tho Tobacco Trust and gave expression to his real feeling In a declaration that he thought a man could be a trust lawyer and still at the same time properly and equitably admlnlstct tho affairs of tho people and not have any leaning in tho direction of his employer of tho swollen fortune Either Mr Willson isnt the lawyer or astute man whom ho has been advertised to be or he thinks tho people of Kentucky the constituency whom ho would like to represent as governor aro Blow think leg He had no sooner declared that ho was drawn into the Continental Tobacco Company case that one in whirl ho sought for them to evado tho pay ment of 100000 into the public treas ury of tho city of Louisville as taxes through employment in a similar case for tho Mengel Box Co than Mr Chinn tho democrat who first called the atten tion of the public to his trust connection disclosed to tho public whom Mr l Willson sought to deceive that the Box Company is largely held by the Conti nental Tobacco Co and by Mr Duke tho Tobacco King of the United States and that In reality the company In whose fight ho learned tho tactics to bo employed in the Continental caso Is but an infant Industry of tho parent cor porationAngered intensely at this exposure of his trust and monied connections this republican lawyer showed his bitterness in attacks of a violent nature upon A Owsley Stanley tho Congressman and Tobacco Growers Association orator of Western Kentucky and upon Gov Beckham Judge Hagcr and Congress man Ollie M James of the First Con gressional District He referred to tho distinguished Kentuckian who has occupied tho governors chair for eight years and who is the nominee of the democratic party for a scat in the Uni ted States Senate as Cripsy Ho referred to Judge linger who has a State wide reputation for ability and honesty In public affairs as Incompetent and dismissed tho brainy Congressman from tho First District as a Tumble- Bug These remarks aro well in keep y t ing with a man who would denounce the greatest democratic leader of the century aa a paid orator They are such as would be uttered by a hired r man of the wealthy classes of this country who have no regard for tho great masses of this country and who credit no man with being honest or with having an honest purpose This demo crats attacked in such fashion will pay no heed to Mr Willsons references knowing them to emanate from a man who has lost his head through realizing that tho people of Kentucky aro about to turn him down as have tho people of the Fifth Congressional District be fore this time when ho sought to represent them Mr James In a speech at Danville referred to tho anger of Mr Willson and said that he James doubtless recalled the Tumblebug to Mr Willson for he and other democratic campaigners had been rolling him around some since they had gotten him on the run as a result of his trust connections
