Mr F S McClary in the last issue of the I J From my observation of his conduct from early boyhood until his death I can truthfu ly say that his conduct in every respect has been the most exceptionally fineA I have ever known in any young 1C years of age by the death of his father the burden was cast upon him for the support protection and care of a helpless mother and three sisters To the accomplishment of this task he brought a degree of energy heroism and business skill that would have been creditable to a man of mature years and trained business habits and performed this duty until his mother death lie was a kind obedient affectionate son and brother and husband Just in all of his dealings kind and thoughtful in all of his utterances So line indeed was his character for hon esty punctuality veracity and busines skill that hardly had he arrived at young manhood when Samuel H Baughmai discovered these noble qualities of the boy and proposed to and did loan hin money to set him up in the mercantile business here Ills success in the busi ness In conjunction with his partner has been remarkable and the standing of the firm with the wholesale mer chants is as good as any firm in Cen tral Kentucky He added to the vir tues of a perfectly moral man the ran virtues of a Christian With faith in God faith in man and faith in himself he went to the work of his life full of good cheer confidence and hope am performed Ills duty in a truly heroic manner In the article of death he was the same confident hopeful faithfu and noble young man A few hours before his death true to his noble char acter he sent for his benefactor S II Baughman to thank him for the kind ness and confidence which prompted him in the assistance rendered and did so in terms the most affectionate and tender possible thus showing a degree of gratitude so remarkable as not to be forgotten in the very article of death And so strong were his religious con victions and so intense was he in his relations that he begged them to meet In him the great beyond- I take great pleasure in paying this tribute to the character of so noble and heroic a young man T P HILL CHURCH MATTERS Fourth Avenue for the past few months coming as it did at a season of the year when the work of the society is at its most arduous and expensive stage has seriously handicapped the work Solicitors who have under normal conditions been able toI supply the needed funds have found It worse than useless to appeal for fund in the field hence the treasury of the institution is depleted The work is or such nature that it cannot be permitted to cease or to lag The winter season forces the dependent children of Kentucky into the hands of charity an from every quarter of the State come the demand for the society to take Into its care the destitute dependent child ren Other classes of businessz manufactory a mercantile enterprise or other line of business may govern Itself according to conditionseven tot suspension or curtailment of activity but the work of the Childrens Home Society upon which so much depends for the suffering helpless children it Is different The society has labored incessantly to interest county officials allover Kentucky in placing each countys pauper children in the care of the Institution and now since the panic is upon the country the society finds itself hard pressed to fulfill its mission These conditions were not foreseen and could not be escaped and since they are upon us some means must be found to tide the work of the society over the crisis Only in dire extremity does the Kentucky Childrens Home Society make such an appeal for help as it is now compelled to make The work cannot be permitted to lag The generous public of Louisville and of the State has always come to the rescue and will do so again if apprised of the deplorable fact that without immediate help not only the work will suffer ir reparable injury but the hundreds of helpless little ones who are clamoring for admission to the care of the home will suffer piteously Therefore this appeal is urged upon everyone who realizes the extent and necessity of this philanthropic work It is urged upon every citizen of Ken tucky whose heart goes out to the help less children of the Commonwealth and it is a plea for aid at once Every sec tarian institution with headquarters in Louisville and at other points of the State have enjoyed a bounty from some sourcebequests benefits and con certed efforts of organizations while the Kentucky Childrens Home Society with its vast task before it has not been so fortunate It has been nearly four years since it was compelled to beg of the public to come to its rescue and it only doss so now because there is no other alternative Those who have the Vandyke spirit of Christmas can cast their bread upon the waters by helping this worthy cause Those who prefer can leave their sub scriptions with MrsL M Goodnight who will cheerfully forward it
