In this In atltutlon BeIng somewhat addled by the dazzling display of painting and sculpture we cannot give accurately a description of such notable masterpieces ns Tho Greek Slave Venus Mclos or Velas Napoleon Among tho paintings are such productions as Churchs NiagaraFalls and Blerstadt Mount Corcoran of the Sierra Nevadas the latter of which is in honor of Mr Corcoran tho promoter of tho Institution This is not a description at all but one may secure a catalogue for a small sum and thus get into the merits of each picture and work of art It will most likely be of profit to somo to examine cursively some of tho other features of this city of magnificent dis tances A prominent feature to me is tho largo number of statues at differ ent localities a few of which attract tho attention of the visitor This fea ture shows that tho spirit of tho times has changed some since Shakespeare wroto In Henry VIII Mens evil manners live in brass their virtues we write in water It also proves that we live In deeds not years for each statuo is erected to commemorate some brave deed of ser vice Truly it may be said of them that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them It seems to mo that a partisan controlling power has brought it about that no champion of a lost cause however sin core and noble and brave Is to be hon ored in marble or bronze in the Capital city For why should Sherman and his ilk bo memorialized any more than some of the bravest heroes that ever died on tho field of battle 7 Is it because of a lost cause or not T Why have not Lee Winfield Scott tho bronze work of which is moulded from cannon t taken in tho Mexican war There arc several statues of Lincoln and quito a number of Washington Most all of us are agreed that these are just tributes to men of true worth and for deeds of merit Opo other tribute of note be fore we pass from tho Northeast of the executive mansion and that is of that valiant Italian general sent by tho On its base facing southward is this impressive inscription- On no earthly account will I do any act or think any thought hostile to or- t in defiance the old government of tho United States These
