a shooting occurred in which a half dozen persons were wounded none of whom are dangerously hurt From what wee m gather Jim Hughes and Steve Ben edict of Rowland went to the tent where services were being held some what under the influence of whisky They wore talking loudly when Deputy Sheriff Ben Ferrill went to quiet them A few words followed when it is claim ed that one of tho boys fired twice at Ferrill who was then unarmed They drove off and were later arrested In Stanford and placed in jail where they now are Sam Rothwell a West End er and friend of the boys took up tho trouble and ho and Ferrill exchanged several shots the latter having secured a pistol by this time A general shoot ing then took place and after the smoke of battle cleared away it was found that Ferrill was shot in the arm and breast the latter a very slight wound in the shoulder and Columbus thigh Wheeler and a young Miss Coldiron each caught n bullet In tho leg and a little boy was shot in the shoulder It is an ugly affair and those responsible for the trouble should be made to pay dearly for it PENNINGToNMr Tim M Penning ton died at Somerset Friday from injuries received while driving down Waits hill In that city mention of which was made in our Fridays issue Thu acci dent occurred Tuesday morning when ho received a fractured skull and he never became conscious The remains were brought to Stanford and laid be tide those of his wife at 1030 Saturday morning after services by his pastor Rev i L Yandell of the Presbyterian church Mr Pennington was one of the oldest and best known men in Lin coln county having spent most of the of the 84 years of his life hero He was a dev Ut member of the Presbyte flan church and had been an elder some 12 or 14 years He was a regular at tendant at the services of his church and ono of the hardest workers of that congregation Six years ago Mr Pen nington buried his wife but five children and a slsterinlaw Miss Amanda Gog gin who has made the Pennington homo her homo for years are left to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent father and brother The children are Mesdamed A S Thomson of Fayette and P E Kemp of Anniston Ala and Messrs B G Pennington of Dan ville Ill Ephriam Pennington of Phoenix Arizona and Dr T W Pen nington of this place All of them with the exception of Mr Ephraim Penning ton were at the bedside when the end nine Although spared a father along time the children were not yet ready to give him up and their grief at his taking away is great indeed May the rood Lord comfort and strengthen them in their hour of trouble Mr Penning ton was a well preserved man for his years The writer saw him at Somerset where he was visiting two weeks ago and was Impressed with his splendid appearance and tho clearness of his rental faculties In fact ho looked quite as strong and erect as ho did when ho first met him over a quarter of a century ago He was enjoying his visit to his relatives and friends when the fearful accident befell him and cut short a life which gave promise of nnny more years here Deceased was a fine old Kentucky gentleman and we grow with tho relatives and other lends that he is no more
