part of wisdom to nominate him With the good of the Democratic party at hart and desiring the greatest good for the Country a t large with the desire that the Den ocrats act wisely in their selection of a Presidential candidate we ha several things to say and in Going so brought down upon our head a shower of reproaches from c Lincoln friend Brer Walton who fails to answer any of the charges brought by us against Mr Hearst but grandiloquently proclaims us a traitor to the party an ally of the Republicans and other dire and dreadful things In expressing ut sentiments we had the mistortu to tell the truth and for this we can never be forgiven All honor to Mr Hearst for contributing to the Campaign fund give him d credit but this is no reason why he should be elected to the highest office in the gift of the American people 250000 to Mr Hearst is no more than 50 would be to or to Bier Walton but because ned gave 50 to the Campaign would not entitle us to be Govern or of Kentucky or Judge of the Supreme Court or President m the United States Nevertheless we would be entitled to somecre for our contribution Mr Hea has been amply repaid and ev more than he deserves We are accused by our neigh b0i of reading New York papers and magazines we plead guilty and only wish that he had done tht same that he might become enlightened The Interior Journal made the astounding statement that Colliers Weekly from which we we imprudent enough to quote was a Reoublican magazine Not onl is it not a Republican magazine but when Brer Waltons belov Commoner William Jenniu Bryan returned from his Europe d tour this magazine was so enthusi antic in praise of the speeches he made abroad that it was accused of being partial to the Democratic party As a matter of fact this magazine is absolutely independent in politics Brer Walton can fin d this out if he will occasionally read and quote from New York papers and magazines himself We are asked what on ear wouldwe do if Hearst should be the Democratic nominee Editor Walton grows hysterical and says surely we could not support Hearst after such a scathing denuncia tion This is all sheer nonsense fur Mr Hearst has no more chance of reaching the nomination than a camel has of getting through the eye of a needle We have too much faith in the Democratic party and to call its attention to a few plain truths was the object of our page editorial The people should rise up andreject any and all claims made by this man His defeat for the nomination should be absolute and certain We have and always will strive for the good of the Dem ocratic party and we desire to its ee members put before the peop ICthe a candidate of spotless character and reputation a man of brains in whom the people can and will have confidence We do not believe this milk and cider journali which Brer Walton would practise upon the theory that we are fur nishing Campaign material for the Republicans Vb do not want to see tl e good Democrats in phrases in the whole section for any roilay who are troubled by tbe philosophical problems of pray or festis prayed He needed to pray At all the great crises of His life we find Hint spending not minutes but hours in prayer Lord teach uc to 1ray etc The request was prompted 1 by Jesus example and by by the custom of John the Baptist The rabbis frequently taught prayers to their followers When ye pray say etc This does not mean that the disciples were always using the same words but rather indicates the class of things to be prayed for and the spirit of prayer The time devoted to this lesson is not long enough to matte a careful stud of each phrase of the Lords Prayer and also of the teachings which follow it We give here Stevens and Burtons analysis of the prayer and then go on to the next paragraph The elements and objects of a Christians prayer judging from Jesus model are 1 A universal rec ognitioii of Gods presence and charnc for the establishment of fraternal human relations through the better re litlons of men to God 3 the sarisfac tiou of legitimate physical needs personal fellowship with God through the forgiveness of sins protection from temptation Compare this pray er with the similar one given in Matt 0 913 The first of Jesus Illustrations teaches by a contrast not by a com parl son if the lazy and laity almost always means selfish neighbor would applies to all life as well as to answers to prayer The ones who win are those with noble purposes and indomitable wills who ask till they do receive who seek till they find who knock till the door is flung open to them The thought of God as a father was not Jewish The common names for Him had always been those that spoke of His power majesty righteousness or His special relation to the one na tion Jesus knew God as no one else had ever done Others had had partial views of Him some bad seen one timing asIHe was He saw that the relation of God to men was more like that of the true human father to his children than any other relationship known to men If ye then being evil know how to give good gifts etc Is it reasonable to think that God is less loving or less theishall your heavenly Father
