member election Judge Cress has been urged for several weeks to make the race not only by Democrats but Republicans also but not until the last few days when solicitation became so strong for him to enter therace did he make r up his mindfully to enter the ifight Judge Cress was born and reared in this county where he has lots of admiring friends who will delight in giving him their hearty support He is now 42 years of age and for 18 years has been a most successful practitioner and is a most convincing advocate on the stump During Gov Beckhams term of office Judge Cress was often named as Special Judge when the regular Judge could not preside always doing honor to him self and credit to the profession Notwithstanding the overwhelm ing Republican majority of the 28th district Judge Cress and his friends feel that the chances of suc cess are most excellent because of the disruption in the Republican party in every county in the district on account of certain turns changes and swaps that were made in the recent judicial fight P H SHDTTS ON ROADS BROMO Sept 6 09 Well well It seems as though I have gotten a loadonmy shoul ders as people say the burden of building a pike road from Mt Ver non to Bromo ison me s1 recent Iv wrote an article on that subject But as I said if my writing had any influence I wouldcome again Now my plain is to raise a sub scription list along said route and in Mt Vernon showing to the Fiscal Court bow much we want good roads and ask them to lend us a helping hand This piece of road should be a sample to the peQj pie of Rockcastle and show to them that we can have some good roads as well as other counties The people throughout the state even the large cities and Bluegrass counties are taking more interest in our welfare by proposing to give us that state aid in building our highways than we are ourselves but they wont help us unless we are willing to receive 1tIThe route proposed would follow pretty closely to the old Mt Ver non and Casey county road only leaving it when we cant get a good grade by following it I do not hardly know how many people would be directly benefitted by building such a road Beginning at Mt Vernon by way of Tunnel No i it would intersect with the old Somerset road giving the peo ple of that section of country a mile of good road in going to town then going bv way of Mr Geo Lwisays to Owens cut there we intersect the road coming from all that good farmingcountry about Maretburg then we pass over gap of hill by Red Will Owens Then we leave the road leading in to the Sayers neighborhood then on by way of Freedom church to foot of Woe hill then we leave the Skegg s creek leading to Wabd then over gap of hill and through valley to Geo Marlers there we leave road leading tp Quail and Bee Lick then sotith to Bromo which would give all the people of Level Green and the southwestern part of the county a good roadto thecoun ty seat Now Mt Vernon do you want the tradeof all these peo yoqrtownmuch I have only talkedto a few of the people along the proposed route lately but nearly all that 1 have are going to help head a list which will be printed each week and as we get new converts their names and amount will appear each week in the SIGNAL Now if any man woman or childwant to help a good cause either tell K S Albright J H McKinney or myself the amount you wish to give and your name will be ridded to the list We will receive subscriptions for any amount from one to a thousand dollars We do not want to stop agitating pikes till automobiles are seen passing from Richmond and other Arnold nominee for First district and Hardini Moore for Tnird so far have made no reply These gentlemen evidently do not consider the great question of road building in Rock astle of such minor importance that a reply is unnecessary and have decided to treat the matter with indifference or are they simply afraid to Rut themselves on record for or against roads until alter the November election The voters of Rockcastle are waking up she importance of road building and since the Fical court must be largely instrumental in giving the relief sought we be lieve that the people are going to see to it that the men who compose the Fiscal court for the next fonr years are men who are alive to the- needs of the county and men who have enough nerve and backbone to come out and say what
