present marshal was re elected by a majority of 36 and the new board of trustees composed of A H Hamlin F R Asher Jame Meadows E B Cox and E B Brown were elected by a good majority over the old board The old board was composed of JouaJ McKenzie Dr A G Lovell R B Mullins Fritz Krueger and D C PoynterThe has come and gone In Rockcastle the Democratic ticket made a splendid showing all the candidates running ahead of their ticket and nowhere losing by more than the ordinary majority In the County Court Clerks race Mr D N Williams made a great fight making it a tie vote in the two Mt Vernon precincts which generally give from i5o to 160 Re publican majority He carried West Mt Vernon Brodhead and Brown While Mr Williams lost he has nothing of which he can complain the Democrats stood manly by him Many republicans voted for him speaking cut public ly in loud praise of his fitness for the office His sons C C M C and R G Williams fought valiant ly for his success W H Krueger has proven him self somewhat of a detective as he has safely landed behind the bars the four negroes who broke into his store one week ago and took several hundred dollars worth of clothing He followed them to Middlesboro their home and captured them after doing some pretty wise detective work and they are now in the Mt Vernon jail The negroes tell the whole story and substantiate the work of the bloodhounds brought here from Houstonville The negroes say they went to thi cut near Sparks Quarry and then caugbt a freight train for Crab Orchard and it was at this cut that the dog lost the trail andwas never able to go anv further The clothing was packed in a trunk the trunk also being taken from Kruegers store and checked from Mt Vernon to Crab Orchard and the following day the negroes went through to Middlesboro There is a band of these negro thieves whom it is said have a large stock of clothing at Middlesboro and that their goods have all been secured in this way Some of them are reported to be worth as much as 00000 They have been doing this kind of work for five years but this is the first time they have beeu caught although people suspicioned such The first negro brought here connected with the offense was at one time porter for the Lcot Non this line but was injuredand was then given a position in the depot at Middles boro but later discharged because of thefts connected with baggage left at depot We have no doubt but that this same crowd of negroes are the one who have been doing thestealing at Livingston Brod head Withers and other points- in the county
