mention ed as almost certain to be a canI didate1 The race this year beI tweeh the Democratic and Re publican ticket sesto be of great interest as the county always close looks more evenly divided this year than usual UNDAY PAPERsOur town N being without the line of Sunday trains from Louisville the good inhabitants have been denied the privilege of Sunday mails and the big Sunday news papers which fact has been de plored by some of the worldly minded while by other pious ones it has been considered a blessing A new system was jn augurat d however on last Sunday and the big edition of the Courier Journal was on sale by the agent here as early as 12 oclock The papers were brought over from Lebanon where they had been sent on the regular morning train The Dispatch the new silver daily was also expected Sunday but missed connection and those who had waited for the first ap pearance of the great silver champion for their Sunday read ing were disappointed for day at least The local oneI public no doubt would like tojsee the agents keep the thing goingS so that an opportunity givenfor the perusal of undayIpapers by those who CANDIDATESSEeakingofPol an observer the other day It is really wonderful w little it thkes to make to candidate for a county office They spring up on election year like volunteer Udllbaford dozen or so candidates for each office and each onoas confident of winning too You will find all kindsthe good old citizen who has voted the straight ticket for forty years the poor and clever man with a large family who needs the office the young ambitious fellow who wants to serve the people and the smooth man and uptodate politician who stands in withi the gang and who nine times out of ten beats the field hands down Qualifications receive small con sideration itSjis all political scheming in county politics and well as in State and National and the best wirepuller wins FASHIONED FAIRIt has OLD been decided that Washington county will have an old fashioned fair this year such a one as those of years ago Which won for the good people ot theJ county the well deserved name of being hospitable and good livers The next fair will be devoted to ring exhibitions of horses cattle sheep hogs andJ other live stock and more atten tion will be devoted to farm products and thehousewifes department The trotting horse and gambling attachment will probably be eliminated and such premiums will be offered for the best ring exhibitions as will attract some of the best hQrses in the state here The directors- of the lair Company have notJ fully decided on all the plans j but will hold another meeting on mallast year was not a success IIveryII tancy about repeating a losing venture but it is thought that withjeavong off the trotting race feature and otherwise cutting downexpenses that a fair can be had that will be just as en joyable to the home people andI at the same time it can be made to pay expenses Springfield and Washington county cannot afford to miss having a fair and more encouragement should be given to the enterprise- THE PAcq believe SETS county is a lead ing county in the State remarked a cynical friend If you will remember ehe led off in this tollgate raiding business and those other counties are trailing along just following our mustIadmitgoing to lead off in another fash ion and that is in making assignments The fashion has been started and a dozen or more farmersand business men inthet county have made assignments within the past few weeks end you mark my prediction in a IIotherure It is a doubtful honor to be such a leader but there is no doubt about the fact that Washington ounty does lead in some things TIASHINGTON GOUNTY AGAIN 11I notice a dispatch sent from Lebanon states that the keeper of a tollgate at Lebanon has re ceived a letter warning him to collect no more toll on penalty of bein burned out The arti cle further states that the com VashIIfield Raider or something of that kind It is a great pity that all the devilment that is done and all that is threatened in Marion county should be laid at the door of Washington county people Tho threat may haveS been sent all right and asS reported but I fail to see whyS Washington county people gate raiders or anybody else should so much concern them selves about affairs in Marion count We certainly have troubles enough of our own YOUR lYE Omaha Invariably the descrip exceptIpeople have seen tho great bead light of the machine than have seen the full outline ol the ship itself Tho general verdict is this A long steel body shaped like a cigar 40 feet long and to 10 feet in diameter with winglike attachments on the sides while lore and after appear wheellike connections similar to the steering apparatus of a steamship The top iis tapped by a balloonlike bag- though oboi and seemingly bSsS j Yj attached to the cigarshaped yessel by ropes as tho upper part has been observed to sway violently The headlight fs similar to a locomotiva The Brat case reported in which the airship bas been seen on tire ground comes from Wolf Creek Township Iowa just across the river Richard Butler a very welltodo farmer Lives this varsiooUJ was driving home Wednesday night when I ob served a JIg pt in A field close to the road I knew fit house was there and stopped to investi The light besides had a glow more like that of an electric lamp than the kerosene burners usual ly employed by the residents of the Wolf Creek district Butler strained his eye3Bi1d was petrified to see a dark bulk through the windows of which the light shone He describes it as a long narrow car lesem ling a corset box in shape but perhapsx30 to 85 feet in length and 6 to 7 feet in width and height Over tbis car floated a cigarshaped bag horizontally placed of about the same length as the car and 8 or 10 feet thick at its greatest diameter Whether there were sails or steering apparatus Butler cannot say for at this moment his horses caught slghtof the same thing as their master and bolted proMpitately for the opposite side of the road aid tumbled driver and wagon into the ditch By the tiuie Butler bad crawled from the wreck and regained his feet the machine was moving briskly in the southerly direction and at the same tIme as ding tan anglel of about 45 degrees Butler watched it out of sight and then continued on his way on foot Reports from Chicago and points in Illinois arid Indiana tell of other persons who have seen the mysterious i visitor and an amateur photographer of the Windy City claims to have taken its picture Ho disphvs
