how much tobacco is t6 be planted this sea son There is one thing that the average tobaccq man will lie about andthat is the number of acres of the weed he will plant This year you will find that nine out of eVery ten tobacco growers you question about the size of his proposed crop will tell you that he intends to plant only so many acres when inV reality he isI making preparations to put out jjust twice the number ofI acres he has named The reaj son of this is quite plain athei smooth tobacco man thinks he is working a great scheme on his neighbor but he 13 mistaken j his scheme works just the forI site result from the one da sired You see your tobacco fried tells all of his neighbors that ho in tends raising only a little patch of tho weed this year that the market is low and is going lower in other words he tries to conI vinco his neighbor that tobacco anyIwayfollow the example of wise ones and not attempt u large crop thisi season Now it generally turns out that the neighbor does a little thinking on his own hook and reasons somewhat like this if all these other fellows dont intend to plant a full crop tobacco will be scarce and prices higher this fall so I will put in Ia little more than I expectejl to and make a big thing out of itI and so it turns out that a whole lot of those growers think of tho same little scheme and the result is a big crop all around the neighborhood Me OF GAIETyThe AROUND Club has not been heard from for some time but the w nkers in that charitable literary and social order wish itj understood that they are by no proIIposethis summer iit is said some really good talent lying undiscovered a r o un d Springfield The people of this place have frequently shown their appreciation of a good thing in the line of dramatic entertainments and it may be well toadd that they have also shown a great capacity for endurance and forbearance in seeing some thing not so good and it goes without saying that if the Char ity Club or any other organiza tion gives us something good the effort will be appreciated TATHAM The opening hop will I given at Tatham Springs on next Tuesday evening and the usual good crowd is expected The hopat Tatham which is given every year soon after the opening of that popular resort alwaysdraws a crowd from Springfield Harrodsburg and other points The number of guests at the Springs so far this spring has been comparatively small owing to the continued coolness of the weather The cool days and cooler nights we have been having while very pleasant to the citizen of everyday walks in life is tough on summer resorts as it is when old Sol is putting in his best licks anti making life a burden to city folks that the summer resorts and springs flourish The usuall good quota of guests is looked for at Tatham this season however or just as seen as the weather opens and the management has made quito a number of improveraents to ad to the comfort and convenient of the visitors ThelSpringfioldI its riew paper to sell and the space in his columns to rent Can anyone exIjone or the other He can if he so chooses and he does as a matter of fact furnish a great deal of space rent free But it does not follow that he ought to expected to do so It ought toI ItIgrocer strange say is not looked upon in that light at all yet everybody knows that the existence of a newspaper depends upon the rent of itsI size so long as there are such brilliant municipal events as the election of school trustees The soulstirring sentiments and gen nine patriotism that this election calls forth in the noble sons of the soil well in comparison the presidential election isnt in it The repetition of these always memorable events which took place here on Saturday afternoon surpassed possible in brilliancy and eclat all preceding events of this nature We shall not attempt to describe it In order to form anything like a correct conception oi it one must be an eye witness Who can ever clesrly feel and know what a great battle is but he who has been in the thickest of the fray smelled the smoke heard the awful roar and felt the sting lug shot and shell So it is with a trustee election YOtmust stand bravely in the heat of the awful fight with your heart welling in some degree with in teresfand Jove for posterity that you feel sure in the hearts of those about you There they are each conddent that ho is right in his chosen man and pityingtbose who are so blind as to Be for someone else Suddenly there is a mad rush of one faction to the woods for another voter and a simul taneous dive of the opposing faction for one of their kind And so the war wages warmer and waricer and occasional bracer being administered peibaps to one not so sure of his views Then the widows the dear widows blass their hearts Thev to whom the lit tie children must now look for support and educational advan tages The law in this One in stance stepping aside from Its dignity in recognition of the fact that there is no mind superior to her own to voice her views or what must be her lawbe it her view or not has given her the right of suffrage in legard to who shall train the minds of her children Realizing as she does that on little influences pre cepts and examples given chil dren often depend the lives and character of men and women She too wends her way to the polls and votes for the man who she believes has the best interest of the school at heart But so ib goes excitement alrnos reaching frenzy until the polls are closed The defeated sitle then discuss and discuss and perhaps cuss all the rea sons why they were del eated and the trustee election like all great deeds goe into the past if not jinto hUtpry But who knoweth thoresults ivlay tl ey not heI reatfqrodoreil as the reI suits of many hBSgreai little experience with toll gates or toll gate raid ers either Aswe are personally acquainted with every individual that composed the first band that operated in this county perhaps the inside story might be of interest It was during the pro tracted meeting at New Hope on the night of August 28 1896 about half a dozen boys between the ages of nineteen und twenty decided to destroy the toll gate on the new pike between Moores ville and New Hope or Bookers Station As a disguise they had their coats turned wrong side out and the arms with which they intimidated people with was one 22 caliber revolver not in extra shooting condition Three gates were destroyed on this raid the one above men tioned toe gate at Maud and the one about a mile north of Moores Ville betwe n Mooresville and Maple Hill Such was the Lex ington of the turnpike war and the success of this raid led to the memorable charge on the manygatesSpringfield were destroyed While many hard names have been given our county it
