suddenly roused to the fact=which has been plain alT along that this place is badly in need pIa religious revival and meetings will be held by three of the different churches within a short time A series of meetings will begin as has heretofore been announced atf the Presbyterian Church on next Sunday The Baptist will hold or protracted meeting at some early date and Rev Hart field an evangelist of the Christian Church is here to preach for meetings being held attlie Court House It will be so arranged thatnone of ihese meetings will 9ct iut all the good people 10fth town will work together for a revivatbf religious interest arid it isto be hoped that great good will come of their efforts LISLETheLebanon Enter Ma jor Lisle It says Major Lisle the Republican candidate for Circuit Judge is very much exercised over an election story which is being circulated to his detriment It is alleged that fortyeight years ago in Green county the Major got drunk The worst of it is the story has not been denied but as it is not onrecord that he has deviated for fortyeight yeas from tho straightand narrow path from which a man is apt to wriggle when under the influence of the flowing bowl it is probable that most people will forgive this one offence II VOTE ON Itf The voters of ToI w itiSsaid by those in a positioiitp know will be given a chance to vote on the water works question at the regular election in November andT it is to be hoped that if there did live any man within the town limits opposed to the move mgnt he has been compelled gosfry long enough or to toj water far enough to be yinfced by this time that waterworks for Springfield would be a good thing after all It is necessary before the town trus tees are allowed to issue bonds or otherwise incur a debt for the town that a vote of the people shall be taken and it requires a twothirds vote to carry such a proposition A call for such an election will I understand beI issued in time that the vote may be taken on November the sec thelquestionnot yet determined but particu lar pains will betaken this time that everything is done regular ly and according to law has been a DIPXHERIAThere felt in the neighborhood over the threatened outbreak of that dread disease diptheria and the cases which have developed while they are tew and of a mild type are enough to cause alarm among anxious parents It seems that every reasonable precaution has been taken however to provent any further spread ofI the contagion and is to be that there will be no suffering among the little folks nor anxie ty among fond parents thisFor any fellow with a fakirsI get in his work There has scarcely been a day since the snows of last winter that the town has not been canvassed by some peddler book agent or pic ture man This latter individual has been decidedly m evidence and the days during the past summer have been few in deed that have not witnessed the coming and going of the SItomakero1DSI tograph a lifesize crayon por1 t trait of the baby that will be a beauty and a joy forever in the eyes of the family as it hangs the picture on the wall I discussed the subject of the picture man with an observant citizen the other day and at the lowest calculation we estimated that fourIhundredmen to visit this town since March last and the strange thing about it they all seem to do business Where all the moneycomes from with which to pay these fellows and what becomes of all these pictures are quesCiOns which naturally arise and which few can answer powerful dry out DttyuItS was the greeting from nearly every farmer who came to town on last County Court day andif all reports are to be relied on they told tile truth in almost every case There has seldom been a time even in the memory of the oldest linhabitant thatthe county hasbeen so dry There have been times when a drouth has done more damage on account of it coming at a dif ferent time of tho season or at a time to cut short a crop but for one long continued dry spell the present one beats them all Farmers throughout the county are put to a great inconvenience to got water for their stock and are compelled to drive in some instances several miles to water The ground is much too dryjfor plowing and the indications are that wheat planting will bg late pastrueswill ITKCERTAiN The election in- J this county this year is about as uncertain a thing as you could imagine observed an old politician the other day and it is hard telling indeed what the re sult will be Things are so mixed and there has been so many issuer brought up since the last election that it is hard to form any estimate of the vote I am of the opinion that there will be a lot of scratching going on and a general mixing up in the voting The county has always been close you know and it is even chances which way the thing will go Owing to over crowding and bnd cnI Illation tho air of the schoolroom is often close and Impure and teachers and The lowland tobacco was the best ofhe crop Some ware- housemen think 40 per cent of the crop was ncnt when tbe frosts came and they say that the whole crop will not exceed 40 per cent The circular re gcades of Burley the gi eater advance being on grades wl icE have been selling from 6to 1 A week ago we reported the market as showing a decided ad vance but the market this week has been still higher The man ufacturers have been keen competitors against the speculative order3 which are being filled Many of those who bought to bacco duripg tbesummer mouth for resale are new closing out with a handsome f margin of pro fit while others think the itua tion justifies a still further ad vance and are making purchases ior resaleThe ood ram which we hadl hero on the 16th inst did cot prove to be AS arue the tobacco on the high lands was not damaged but tne low land tobacco in many sections was materially affected and in many cases totally destroyed Recent cool weather conditions have resulted in cut- tinga great deal of tobacco 10 anunrpe condition and lr the best and most extensive in formation which we can gather it would seem that the yield of Burley tobacco this year will be about 50 per cent of last years yield It is noTe difficult to de termine with regard to the yield of the dark crop because of the fact that the weather conditions have varied very much in that section but it is certainly true that the falling off in yield as compared with last year will be great The damage by frost was at first thought not to be urge but samples exhibited on tbe breaks showed that serious
