of Gossip vs WHISKY The an WATER from Miss Chris tine Bradley who is chosen to chnen the battleship Kentucky at the launching soon to take plape that she will use a bottle of pure water from a spring on the old Lincoln farm instead of the proverbial bottle of wine or as has been later suggested a bolfie of old Kentucky whisky has brought forth qui te a shower ofcomment The funny para grapher on the Dig inetropolitap papers has taken it up and passed it on and quite amusing are some of the clumsy attempts at wit indulged in by some of those fellows whose knowledge of Kentucky and her people is lim ited to the reports of the tame ofour state as a producer of fine whisky fast horses and beauti Jut women In my humble opin ion Miss Bradleys decision is toI be commended if for no other j reason than it will throw cold water on the enthusiast who thinks that old Bourbon should play a leading part in every unction wherein Kentucky fig ures The fact is that the Ken tucky fine whisky beautiful wo then chestnut should be retired It has served its time and there are now otherxand more import ant things of which Kentuckians may boast and be proud one being as illustrated by th6 casein hind women of high ideals who seek for the pure in life rather than pander to suggestions from those whose ideas on l certain subjects are necessarily corrupted The redoubtable Jack Chinn Inotice gets interviewed on the subject and is very much opposed to the cold water idea and says that whisky should be used by all means Well onq should not be surprised at the stand taken by Cot Chinn for in him we have judging from liis reputation a perfect type of the whisky horse etc combina ion blowhard It should be gratifying to Miss Bradley and itto all good Kentuckians how ever to manofwar a big force of policettt men will be put on duty to pre vent any hostile demonstration This is done at the request of i the naval Authorities and I suptt pose the idea is to throw the Spaniards into a state of terror bysuch a display of blue coats brass bUttohs and billies This i sa very formidable move on the I part of the navy department and t will doubtless have the effect of completely paralyzing the Span iards and 1 can imagine the gunneis behind the ironsides of the Vizcaya quaking with fear at the very thought that an extra squad of policemen had ben ordered on duty in New York Develo5ementscihl be watched with interetand if it becomes necessary it might be suggested to our board of trustees to send on our worthy town marshal Dr John Grace to aid those po licemen m effectually squelching any belligerent Spaniards II is about the TODACCoDhi8I ting season of the year for the hardworking tobacco grower for it is just now that he receives his reward for a whole year of toil and trouble It is no doubt with a reeling akinito that experienced by the bloated bondholder in clipping coupons that the tpVocco raiser notstbe1iood priced being realized for tobacco ot Louisville just now The mar ket ishigh and with a tendency toward still higher values By the way a canvass has recently been made by local agents of the CQuntyr arid they agree that there is remaining in Washington county only about 400 hogsheads of the weed unsold This is an exceptionally small amount for this time of the year but it must be remembered that the crop Of 1897 was an unusually small one it being estimated that there were originally only about 1100 hogsheads all told Indicationsi now are for a big acreage next season TtrnNpiIcEsThe question OUR keeping up the free turn nikes of
