comeUJNlnetto N Lowater inNew YQrk Sun IT Is QUEERIt is queer that in I this world of many millions of ppople one man cannot tako himself away from his usual haunts and let his whereabouts bo unknown to his frion4sdor- time without creating o sensa tion One taignl think that one persoh dtit of so many could dis appear f9r a time or even in definitely without causing much comment or change in the affairs of others But it seems that every man has a place in the world and his sudden departure more especially if his sub equent whereabouts are un known will create a sensation and the event will be regarded as a great mystery until the man is found As soon however as the first trace ol the missing ones presence is found the public loses all interest in the case and wondering why it should have created s chb mystery We had a case in point in this- viciiiityi last week John Bailey who is weliKnown about town left home Sunday morning with iSutra woroVtb his iamiljapnd friands and for nearly a week ip ta tiaco was found Of him His dis ippaarance was complete and mYJteri9us and as a conse quince the public ever raady for a sensation began to create all kinds of theories concerning him The suicide theory vas advanced among others and ponds in the neighborhood were dragged in the expectation of finding the body of the missing man Finally when the public h1highestalmost given up for lost there appears a wellknown citizen and tells of having seen thi missing man several miles from town making his way to a heigh boring county on the day of his sudden departure and lo and behold the mystery while not yet cleared lost much of its sen sational interest rS EHIND Springfield merchants jj are uptodate and enterprising in a great many things but there are one or two matters in Whichthey are very much behind tile times One of these Is the absence of a free delivery system In towns much smaller than Springfield nearly every merchant and especially a grocery man affords a delivery wagon and delivers goods to liisthitoihi ers in any part of the town Another item in which the gro cerymen areshort is in nothaving a telephone in their placo of busi noss Delivery wagons and the telephone would go together to form a great convenience for the customer olino groceries but tho local Ji misin90d supplies either clLmibtordout want to recogfliZt the fact It would be a little additional expense at first but I venture tho prediction that the first proceryinau who puts in a telephone and gets a delivery wagon and announces toxins customers that they are at his service will make a move that will be appreciated and will result in a big boom in his busi ness from the jjump OiIAririoxThoro is a general feeling of alarm throughout the stats over the spread of imnU pox and quite a number oftoyns have jasod ordinances m king it compulsory with every inhabitant t9l be vaccinated The State Board of Health has se1itj outwarnings to officials physi Ieians and peopleof the state saying that an epidemic is seri ously threatened and that every precaution should be talien against the spread of the dread disease It would be a wise thing for loqal physicians to be prepared to vaccinate that those who tear the disease motf be given an opportunity to get themselves inoculated and fortj fied against an attack but I dont see any sense in the compulsory business If a person prefers to run tho risk of catching small pox rather than submit to vac cination it eems to me that is his own affairS Other people may quarantine against him and let him sweat it out it he has the disease for its nobodys busi ness but his own I have often heard people say that they would as soon have smallpox as to be vaccinated but thy wore always those Nvho1 have never had the disease but have had a sore arm from vaccination and I have tfiways thought that hud their experience been the reverse their opinion would be different CoiiuNIqATIONThe com- mitteeIN I appointed by the citi zens now see the red flames His first impulse was to open up the throttle and send hjs ttrain through the town at lighir oing speed but in another in stant he saw that this would be fatal rashness for as the smoke cleared away for a moment he perceived that the bridge which was at hand was crowded with people running lor their livesa wild shrieking throng coming toward bioi out of the flames with all
