Gbyarjior of Virginia This wast the years 1780 and 1790I In order to promote the settle meat it seems that Mr Walton gave hundred acres to anyone whCwouldcome in and preempt ve hundred acnes of the securing the location of the county seat he donated all of the ground for the Court Houseadjalland besides gave land for turnpikes as far as ten miles out inievery direction Irom the town At1 that time the Courthouse was on the Perryville road on what is now theJTarm of Mr W T McElroy and prfevibus to that time had been located Ion the Lebanon road in whit is now Marion county Alt securing the building of the tourthpuse on the present sight Mr Walton contributed in many ways te the building of the town and adjacen community Springfield was so tfamed on account of the two springs emptying into the town l branch at a point down near where the TUrod station now iis The first brick house In 1hI p titty was built by Gen Walton and is still standing It was un til recently occupied by Mr buried in the cemetery at this plirce Ha left a widow but no ch Idreo Mrs Walton after wards married John Pope who was atone time Lieut Governor of Kentucky and a prominent lawyer All of the Walton prep eriy was acquired by Gov Pope by its being deeded by his wife the widow Walton to Mr James Giithef nointUlnd deededit to Pope it thus passing from the Walton family Some years later a suit was brought by some of the Walton heirs to the property on the grounds that the transfer of the property to Gov Pope was fraudulent btit the case was lost Gov Pope and the Wife were both buried ip the cemeteryat this place near the grave of Gen Walton monurpentwas sarcophagus that marked the grave of the pioneer settler was torn away and all trace that now remains to mark his last Vesting place is a piece of the broken slab that contains only a portion of the inscription The exact location of the remains is not knojrn The idea is to have a suitable monument made and placed in the Curt House yard fn memory of the founder of the town and pioneer settler of the county Tke matter has been brought before the county au thqftties before but nothing has ever been done on account of the countys
