tree of our town The tr es in the town and for quite a distance in the country around are almost total Ily denuded of foliago and have ttstrack by a killing frost The work is that of the little worm known as t eelm tree borer which has been making ravages onl the Englfsh elm trees all vejtttie country having totally dltstroyed them in some sections t It is sid that a tree alwayS sucif ciimba to its ravages the third or fourth year after it is attackedd This is about t e third year somejj of the trees in Springfield have I 1bemade their appearance earlier and they seemed to be in greater numbers this year than forarmerly The trees lastsurnmert after having ben stripped putI outa second crop of leaves dsif they live the same thing will probably be repeated t lsyeart s the tree can not live long without its leaves which are its lungs Although the tree pests littvo wrought death and dJ1 I struction to thelm tree in near i ilyevery locality where they have ifi sprayershave been tried and in some cases the trees have been RVeLfA large sprayer in which paris groan is Hsed when brought to play on the leaves of thp tree attacked byjthe worms j tis said will effectually stop them A liberal application of c3al oil and lime aboat the rot g and trunk of the tree will also s fill the pests By the way it seems to us that it would boa opd move for the town author- Ities to invest in a good spraye i and try it on the trees when they leave out again andare about to Jl be attacked The elms are abowt the only shade trees iin the town lf and thy Would be sadly missed n 1mI HE FIRST TREESThe first English elms ever panted in this country it is said Were brought from En 1audatplanted on the grounds ofNi 1EJT1 reth Academy near Bardstowiu They were brought by FthO- Haze1ton oneof the first pri eats connected with that institution From these trees sprouts were obtained to supply jbadfttltM9 for many points in the surround ing country Some of the older Inhabitants remember the first of ihe English elms to beplanted inland aromnd pnRfiedio9re than fifty yeariago Two of which are saidl to be the three original trees planted in this vi cinity are still standing One is the large OM iin the yard of Dr W W Ry5 residence and the other ioa the old Davison place now owned by Mr C It Gfrundy The third was on the cemetery hill but lias been dead for some years Till usefulnewi oj the English elm as a shade trae is evIdently a thing of the past sid a bug proof tree is wanted to supply its place IB AIR WEEK The last week iu AuguStor this year promisesi to be a good one tor
