other section because such a large percentage of her white rural population mate and female is to liMping themselves In the kitchen or on tho farm Conse quently we suffer more from tho loss of labor tItan those parts of the conn try where tho people know how to do their own work One of the many problems which confronts Us Is how to mako tho farm more attractive to tho laborer orcn though ho bo a negro and show him that his Interests arid comfort both lay more on the plantation than on the public works Wo think farm wanes are say a third higher than they wero n few years ago because we pay possibly onethird more la cash and like the laborer himself tall to take his per quisites Into the account and then aa he does that because tho railroads mines aad public works gen orally pay 160 per day that they pay twlc as much as we farmers pay We forget tfiat white he reofllyes these wages he boards and lodgeq himself and pays for everything ho gets and that ns a matter if fact the farmer when the perquisites rent fupl stir are considered and est mated at fair prices pays a muck as the public works Nor do we stop to consldor that ev ery man white or black HHos to ban dlo money hoar It Jlagle In his own pocket and realize that It Is his It oven for a little Few men at tach value to the perquisites of their business trade or labor They count tho cosh as all they get and this Is of people In the humble walks of life On railroad work a man receives say flBQ per tlajr which for 26 days Is 33 per morth bit experience shown that he loses at least four days per moath from bad weather and oth er causes which will reduce his tmle to 22 days and his pay to 33 Now the farm we pay this man f12 where we formerly paid him 8 and furafj felw with rations a house fpcl gardes pasturage fop his cow and allow him to keep chickens and a pig Now suppose we pay this mas the same ho gets oi tho railroad viz f150 day ao d tkat he mikes for what M got say yof inqf h House real aid gardes CM- balance of f1550 Then 4o as they do In the north and west charge him hire for your horse and carryall or buggy when he uses them Instead of tending them you do now When he Is sick or out of place pay to tho farmer for what are now perquisites will go on Pay the in n the inoney gftd let him feel tbat it Is his Theft collect for Whit he owes and do not butt accounts In the monthly settlement A man recelvlag 20 per month la entitle to 20 or 38 credit and clr cuMitaftceg will arise when he will be obliged to avail himself of his credit Out If this fcecesslty should arise the landlord if ho deems It advisable Ca always secure himself by a bill of om the cow the pig sad the chickens and aced not run mor than the ordlmary business risk In tho transaction Another matter worthy of cpuslder atlo Is that this plan of employing la bor will do a great deal towards the education of the negro and will bring him te K realization of the fact that It costs so ethlsjf tp live and that it rests with him m4 mat his employer to support his family Many successful farmers In tho north sad west follow the above plan amd like It Fanner 1m Progressive Xstlmtates of iho coat of spraying are always
