oning can take is that known as uremia so called because it has been thought to be caused chiefly by urea one of the waste products of assimilation which it is the prow ince of the kidneys to remove This however is only a surmise No one really knows what poison ous substance is the direct cause of uremia kidneys perform such important and necessary work in the economy of the body that which causes them to their job is a serious matter and a refusal or an inability on their part to work at all is specially fatal Uremia is almost always the re suIt of a diseased state of kidneys A healthy kidney does its work faithfully and gets rid of poisons before they can do any haim but diseased kidneys and especially afflicted with Bnghts disease come to the time when they are no longer equal to their task when day by day the special poisons it is their function to discard accumu late until they are present in such force that they are able to over ft ithrbw the whole economy V uremia which is as a they are overtaken by pncu rrtonia or some other acute trouble But some persons who have been apparently in good health and have never suspected themselves vprbeen suspected of kidney trouble develop urenic symptoms suddenly and in these casesactive started at once may re them to health at least for a time This is a reason why signs of urenia should be recognized at especially by persons who have the care of sick people Extreme drowsiness associated with headache and vomiting should always be suspected and iramcdi steps taken to start the kidneys to work or to set other organs to work to help them out by strong Tpurging sweating The first symptoms may take the form ofa convulsion of complete uncon sciousness and of mania but the more gradual onset is the more common The drowsiness gradually becomes more and more marked until it deep cuB into coma which grows more and more profound until death comes unless the active treatment is successfulSometimes bleeding is resorted to under the theory that some of the poison is in the blood and that if a deal of it can be removed and then salt solution injected into the same vein the blood remaining in the body will be diluted and the poison consequently awakened The British have so greatly im proved the Whitehead torpedo that the latest type which has a diam eter of 21 inches is having maintained an average speed of3i knots over a range of 7000 yards The drawback limiting the usefulness of this weapon is that its increased diam titer and length will necessitate the entire reconstruction of torpedo launching gear on all existing year These poles are perfectly sound except at the ground line and as it costs more to a pole than to set a new pole a scheme of reinforcing the poles with concrete has recently been devised it consists in bridg ing the weakened part with rein forcing rods driven into the pole above and below the decayed Concrete is then molded around the pole over the rods In this way the pole can be rendered stronger than it was originally and at very little Many a man counts his life a success when its freedom from fail ure is due to absence of endeavor Simple in the display of hu mar justice
