GREENVILLE KY THURSDAY JUNE 10 1909 50c PER YEAR IN ADVANCE New Theory on Tree Planting That it is better to plant fruit trees carelessly than carefully that they grow better in fact when they arc rudely thrust into a small hole and when the earth is rammed around them as in fixing a fence extremely heterodox is put forth by the duke of Bedford and Spencer U Pickering in a recent report of investigations at the Woburn experimental fruit farm Says E J the report It is an article of faith among fruit growers that fruit trees must be planted in a certain special way if success is to be obtained The soil is properly prepared a large hole is made wide but not deep the roots are carefully spread out in all directions and arranged near the surface with a slight upward hear ing at the ends The soil is filled in with many precautions Small quan tities of the finer soil arc first work ed in among the roots hollow plac es caused by archings in the stouter roots arc filled up and the rest of the soil is put in trodden fully down and the whole left to the compacting influence of the rain The tree is supported by stakes un til it is sufficiently firmly established All this according to the report before us is precisely wrong it is all exactly the opposite of what it should be The proper way to plant a tree is to make a small hole to double the roots up anyhow and stick the tree in throw in the soil it down as hard as if one were fixing a gate post The exper iments seem convincing enough They have been made at Woburn Harpenden Uedford various places in Cambridgeshire and in Devon shire 50 per cent of the sets showed in favor of ramming 27 per cent stowed no difference i e all the jelkborate detail of the ordinary i uni was simply 4 vatic ercnceby what criterion the trees are judged planting in this new way gives better results than plant ing in the orthodox fashion The reports issued from the Wo burn fruit farm are always interest ing becsase they deal with funda mental problems of universal impor tance and not merely with local matters No fruit grower could to make experiments himself on anything like the scale on which they are carried out at Woburn and fruit growers everywhere are under an obligation to the duke of Bedford and Mr Pickering for investigating their problems for them and publish ing tha results in so accessible a form Dr Coxs Barbed physician and the saying like so many others of the phrase Jovjng French has a good deal of truth in it and not a little error There is many a man old in years but young in spirit whose arteries are like pipestems So brittle do they seem indeed that the physi clan hardly dares feel the pulse lest he cross the friable artery under his finger yet these old people arc ac tive in mind and body and seem of ten much younger than men of but twothirds their years Again one meets old and feeble folk whose lives seem to flicker dangerously like a candle flame in a draft whose arteries soft and compressible as those of a child n general however the saying is true anti especially m premature old age it will usually be found that the arteries are hard with fibrous thick chins if not already more or less cal cified Hardening of the blood the medical in a fibrous overgrowth of the walls the arteries usually following more or less degeneration of the normal tissues of the vessels As to just how this comes about physicians arc hot entirely agreed It is probe able that the chatige occurs first the very minute vessels those that run through the walls of the larger vessels supplying them with blood 1 postthis Russellreviewing u then U andram way ltC rA ftlHng1 J tr are as I vesselsarteriosclerosis accepted termconsists I I r I n t doctrine r care- h k k 1 y RrtnCtsul t ti n very aain5 t makesrno dif tt afford a Y I r yt b f ti a t f- y t oft for their nourishment When these are hardened by the deposit of tissue they less blood and carry it more slowly and so the nuiiition of the walls of the larger vessels is reduced This leads to softening and then Nature tries to repair the damage by the only new tissue at her hand namely fibrous tissueLater these fibrous and thickened walls of the larger arteries may be hardened still more by a deposit of lime salts from the blood The arteriosclerosis so common in old age is the result of wear and tear An clastic tube dilated by hydraulic pressure and then con tracting ten thousand times a day will have done work by the cnc1 of seventy years In younger life artcroiosclerosis is most com monly caused by drinking only but in eating es pecially meateating without enough exercise to consume the excess of nutrient material Overwork and chronic poisoning such as leadpoisoning are also factors The best thing for arteriosclerosis is not to get it and the best way not to get it is to be moderate in everything People growing old should be examined medially every ix months and then incipient arter iosclerosis may be detected and per haps arrested by proper diet drugs regimen Do YOU WANT GO TO COLLUCB It so we can help you We have already put hundreds through by means ot our plan Write today for full and which is to be voted on at the next November Election 1909 by the voters Kentucky is as fellows tovit The credit of the b ivcB pedge prJancd to public road purposes and any county may be permitted to incur an indebtedness fn any amount fixed by the county not in excess of five per centum of the value of taxable property therein fur public road purposes in said county said additional indebtedness is sub tnitttd to the voters of the county fur their ratification or rejection at a special election held for said in such manner as may be provided by law and when any such indebtedness is incurred by any county said county may levy in addition to the tax rate allowed un der Section 157 of the Constitution of Kentucky an amount not twenty cents on the hundred dollars of the assessed valuation of said county for the purpose of pay log the interest on said indebtedness roll providing a sinking fund for the of said indebtedness Section 177 of the Constitution Kentucky forever prohibits the Stale from lending its aid to or in any Way helping the counties in wad building or taking any part what ever in behalf of the cause of Good Roads Section 158 of our State Constitu tion limits the power ot any county to become indebted more than two per cent of the thus making it impossible for the greater number of our counties to raise sufficient funds to do any road building at all Section 157 of our State Constitu tion provides that a county cannot levy exceeding fifty cents on each One Hundred Dollars of taxable property therein for any purpose whatever thus making it impossible for many of the counties to provide sufficient means to cicatc a sinking fund and pay interest on the debt created to As a consequence of three tions and restrictions of the powers of the counties and also of the Commonwealth of Kentucky good road building in Kentucky has been a thing of the past since the adop tion of our present Constitution This Constitutional Amendment will remove their restrictions which a barrier to the passage ot such a system of Road Laws by our Leg islature as will enable our counties and our State and perhaps our Fed cral Government to join hands in this important work of building and maintaining a system of improved highways in all parts of Kentucky and would mean more than all else for the comfort convenience and improved condition of all our peo pie if this Constitutional ment receives a majority of the vot es at that election it will then be possible fur Kentucky to pass such a system of Good Road Laws as are in effect in the States of New Address to Owl Club Some nights Dr Kyle made an address to the Greenville club Dr Kyle is a native ut and resides in St Louts and fur a number of years has been in the temperance work anti gained evils that has existed among the human family An eVil that has outlived ccntqricg and gen craiions and has long hud its pare alyzing grasp fixed and fastened up on countries and nations and like a mighty vampire sucking away their very life blood an evil that has become the scourge of life and curse of time continually blighting the peace and happiness of homes crushing hopes and causing tcnrs to now and fall like drops of r in our beautiful country on of wrecked and ruined homes and broken hearts The evil of intoxicating drinks goocMibmesana na ouij country waiting and watching to seize upon the innocence of the young ned purity of the youths of our country and to drag them down the paths of dissipation and de bauchcry to dungeons of dispair to jails and penitentiaries and to shut them up and off from the hopes of life and the light of day debar them from the libraries and lenien tics of great country This evil has entrapped many of our coun trys noble sons of giant intellect and courageous spirit whose as pirations appertained to the highest positions of lift and might have made great and good men but they were captured by intoxicating drinks in early manhood and made prison tars without hope forever ship wrecked to fortune and to fame drifted by the wild waves of dis sipation upon the sea of life lashed and lost on the of ruin I shall refrain from any comment upon the great evil but shall now talk to you about the fight that has been and is now be ing made against this evil From far back in the history of our coun try the good people have been using every means and method known to human ingenuity to prevent the mighty plague of intoxicating drinks It has been done under different names and titles The Sons of Tern perancc The Good Templars The Murphys local optipn and prohi bition but all of these seemed to have failed to successfully and cn tircly avert and check the onward march of this fearful evil The prohibition movement to have been the most effective tide has swept over counties and states exterminating saloons and shops but on its very trail have sprung up blind tigers and bootleg traffic like mushrooms in the marsh and after a little while the territory captured would lapse back under the dominion of saloons but after a mature and deliberate thought of the wise heads of our a pUn unit a movement has been inaugurated and adopted known as the secret order of Oallstn to which you belong Perhaps some of you may not un are curious to know why the appellation of OvlUm is applied to the organization sad that the members of the club SERIOUS CHARGE Daughter and SoninLaw Held for the Murder of Mose Kimmel on May 17 One of the most sensational cases that has arisen in Muhlenberg in its history has developed since the killing of Mr Moses Kimmel which occurred on Miy 17 about 3 a m when he was killed by a shotgun discharge as he slept in His bed There was much speculation over the affair at the time but only his daughter Bessie aged 15 was with him in the home it requir ed much work to get a clue The coroners jury returned a ver diet declaring that Kimmel came to his death at the Hands of unknown parties The suicide theory was advanced by some but from other of KtaimePs daughters was suspected of having some connect tion with the crime as it is charged he has been sustaining a criminal intimacy with Bessie Kimmel his This it is said was known to the girls father and In some altercations between the men Close observation reveal ed suspicious actions and on in formation furnished by a small girl several letters were found in a pond near the Kimmel Friday Upon their contents and other evi dences warrants were sworn out Sunday Smith and Bessie Kimmel being arrested and brought here where they were lodged in jail An examining trial was held yesterday before Judge Pace at which time the commonwealth produced some of its evidence sufficient to hold prisonersMr Kimmel was a promin ent farmer living near EnnIs and was a member of the prominent family of the name This is the first trouble into which Smith has fallen and the daughter is to be pitied as her actions are attributed to a wild infatuation for Smith There has probably been no case like this in the county and there is touch interest manifested Both defendants declare their innocence but they are in the toils of a mass circumstantial oral and written evidence appearing on examination to be overwhelming Orien L Roark returned from Covington and Cinch he spent several days with the funeral directors and cm balmers of Kentucky and Ohio inA
