Kentucky VOL XI NO 26 GREENVILLE KY THURSDAY AUGUST 5 50c PER YEAR IN ADVANCE I AWAN 1909 Unity of Transportation Systems For the welfare of the public the transportation agencies of the coun try should cooperate on a basis of unity Even where two connecting railroad lines arc under different ownership good service to shippers calls for through routes and joint rates with through bills of lading More and more the railroads are coming to cooperate with one an other and with connecting lines of water transportation such as the ocean routes But the canals and navigable riv ers which properly are as much a part of the general transportation system of the nation as the rail lines are not recognized by the riers unless the water lines arc con trolled by them Even then the disposition is not to use the water lines to the limit of their capacity Commissioner Herbert Knox Smith of the federal bureau of in his report on water transportation just made public de clares is a public evil that entire transportation system of the United States should be as now at odds with itself through destructive competition while the transporta tion needs of the public suffer While rail and coast wise water traffic has been increasing Mr Smith points out the inland waterway of the United States has contin ued steadily to decline There is he insists no lack of freight to be handled in the Missis sippi valley At times there has been freight congestion beyond the power of the rail carriers to relieve Yet the river gets a decreasing share of the traffic This situation it is asserted justifies the general con elusion that rail competition is one of the most important factors in wa ter traffic The superficial observe is likely to remark that if rail competition fm v carriers are driven out of busi ness by the excessively low rates put into effect for a time in watertraffic territory by the rail lines which presently raise their rates again The rail lines are able to make these temporary low rates because their higher rates can be maintained at all times throughout the territory not served by water routes Economy of course requires that all lines of transportation water as well as rail be used to the extent of their serviceable capacity as they would be if one authority complete ly controlled both If the railroads are not careful their efforts to sup press water transportation will lead to a serious movement for govern ment ownership of railroads as the only means of insuring the fullest use of all transportation agencies of the country For Piles use Dr great deal of honest nonsense talked and much misspent trouble taken for the reason that a great number of people have the type of mind that irresistibly associates the uqly with the healthy and the nauseous with the wholesome Just as they think medicine cannot be efficacious unless it is thick and black and nasty so they think worn en cannot breath and prosper unless they look like a bale of hay with the middle hoop cut and in pursuance of this conviction they refuse many K of the alleviations of life among c which sugar coated pills and wcll L made corsets should take a high rank When looking at the portraits of the Spanish school of which Velas i qucz is master one is constantly by the way the women seem f 10 be confined in some barbaric in Eiitfument of torture so flat are their rcKMts and so narrow and tiny the r nco rortablelook5ng drawn down Surely no material less rigid wood could be trusted to pro f duce this invariable effect in women all ages and degree o from these most part the woman of today permits herself and is per milted by modern sanctions In deed it is not necessary to contrast her with the woman of the middle ages She is so much more com fortable and sensible in her dress than was her grandmother or even her mother This fact is largely the result of the general acceptance of athletics for women With the invasion of the uptodate girl of the tennis court the golf course and the lakes and rivers the scvcntccninch dam sel who seemed to spend a large portion of her time in fainting spells vanished one may hope forever- It is possible to knock a croquet ball about in tight clothes but for same like tennis that calls for real play of muscle and free action from head to foot one must be properly dressed So much has been done of late years to improve the corset that its reproach as a menace to health has been wiped out The best corsets no longer interfere with the breathing apparatus and many modern corsets leave the diaphragm free and support and restrain as they should With their help and provided that skirts are not too heavy and dragging from the hips women are often better off with corsets than without them Warning Against Coal Famine The winter of 1906 and 1907 was marked by a coal famine in the northwest The weather was severe ly cold Fuel was scarce The companies were unable to move coal rapidly enough to meet the de mands It was easy for the suffer ing people to cry out as they shiv ered that the railroads were to wfpteV emergency Nevertheless they got a little satisfaction out of charges against corporations already somewhat under the ban of popular displeasure 1or three successive years since that cold spell the railroads which supply the region mentioned have tried to guard against a return of similar conditions They have warning notices a long time ahead They have called the fact that July and August are good months for moving coal be cause cars are available at that of the year If the weeks are allowed to slip away without much shipment of fuel the time for the crops comes and the are unable to do anything else except to attend to the needs of the farmersThis years warning to the coal shippers dealers and consumers tells of the certainty of bumper crops and the attendant certainty that the equipment of the railroads will be tested to its fullest capacity to move them If the dealers are wise the suggestion is they will get their coal in now fill storage room and be in condition to meet the of consumers lat er on The warning is little more than a modern form of the fable of antOne thing is sure The railroads have done their part since the cold winter of 1906 and 1907 to get the coal supply ready If an other fam ine in fuel should come there will be less sympathy for the people who clamored for coal on the distant docks which could be secured because of the failure of the rail roads to furnish cars To be fore handed is the part of wisdom If the consumer stirred up his dealer and the dealer jogged the shipper the coal qlaiius would bc moving all along the line The warning of the roads is timely and should be heed ed Mr Chas Roark is local rep rescntalive of some of the true there are cases of cataract in young child ren and one may even be born blind the absence of sight being due to non transparency of the crystal line lens but ninetenths at least of the suflerers from this affection arc past sixty years of age and most of these have exceeded the Huit of three score and ten A cataract is an opaque condition of the crystalline lens the body ly ing just behind the pupil The opac ity may exist in the body of the lens itself or it may form a layer on its surface just beneath the capsule en closing it The cause of cataract is variously stated but most authori ties are agreed in regarding the opac ity as a result of the vain efforts of the lens to change its shape in order to focus the rays of light exactly at the retina and so secure distinct vis ion In youth this can be done readily by the little muscles within the eyeball but as the years go on the lens gels harder and less readily changes its shape and soon after forty it i so hard that perfect ac
