environment it alights at one time on most offensive matcral and at another it is on the food in the kitchen and at the table One of the earliest experiments we remem ber to have seen showing the con nvtion of figs and disease is that in which bluebottle WAS allo wed to walk across a piece of frcsily sllcid potuo The potato subsequently developed colonies of micro organisms all along the track taken by the fly while elsewhere no development took The important question how best to get rid of the fly Fly paper and sticky strings arc unsight ly and the struggle of the fly to releases itself from a sticky sub stand 13 not an intcrtainin sped atle In our own experience the best exterminating agent a weak solution of weak fromaldchyde in water say two teaspoonfuls to the pint and this experience has been confirmed by others It would ap pear that flies are attracted by a weak solution of formaldehyde which they drink Some die in the water others set as far only as the immediate vicinity of the plate of water but all uUinutcly succumb anti where they in large num bers hundreds may be swept up from It is consoling to that by this method the flies have died under a dose of sweetbread to distinguish it from the throat sweetbread or thymus gland is a long narrow gland lying behind the stomach and part of the liver having somewhat the shape of a nail the head or ex panded portion being at the liver end while the long tapering body called the tail runs behind the stomach to the left side of the ab dpmcn It secretes iudigestive fluid somewhat similar in appearance to the saliva which is poured through a special duct or two ducts into the upper por ion of the intestine In illustra than of natures truly wonderful economy we find that this secretion then is not called out at once but begins an hour or two after eating just in time to act upon the food after the stomach has finished with it and passed it 6n into the in tcstinc for further elaboration This pancreatic with the bile the property of emulsifying fatty matter that is of dividing it into tiny droplets in the form in which it exists in milk In addition to these functions nvhtCh supplement those of the had a longer exper ience with the policy of limiting the number of saloons than has Chica go Under the Harkin ordinance the number of saloons in this city is limited to one for every 500 of population which means that no more than the present number of license may be issued for a long time to come as the ratio of saloons to population is now considerably in excess of one to 500 The Harkin ordinance did not undertake to drive any saloon out of business It aims to restrict future increase in their numbers In Toronto the restrictions more arbitrary The authorities there do not hesitate to close guaranty that a license will jc renewed at the expiration of the yearly period In the circumstances the payment of so high a sum as 40000 for the transfer of a license involves considerable risk for licenses The advocates of strongest control of saloons op pose this suggestion They argue that the of a large sum of money to the public would create amoral if not a legal obligation on the publics ingenuity assisted by V U Judge Paynter in taking off the six cents tux on leaf tobacco and giving the farmers great relief there ever was any tax on the raw leaf tobacco of the farmer we find the record curd we are of the opinion whit we unler stand about the tobacco tax ihit the farmer has always been allowed sell his tobacco product in any quantity to leaf dealers manufactur ers or to anyone else without pay lug any lax whatever Under a prev ious law there was a penalty and law against farmers or anyone else for employing agents to drum their tobacco out in small quantities to the consumer in opposition to the interest of the manufacturer who pays a tax on all his sales Now the only thing in this Stanley adventure and feat is that the bill that he as listed in having passed that ii gives to the leaf dealer and to anyone the njjIU tQ sell leaf tobacco in small quantities to the oongunier hy l op lug a report of the same and it to the Government authorities this can be dune against the interest of the manufacturer who preys six oents to Sell hja product The bill that Stanley helped pass gives the right of way for a general leaf dis tribution without any tax In tSyo similar bjll was passed fur the bQ nefii of the farmer anti jn a jprt time leaf dealers warehousemen and peddlers were engaged in the lent distribution alt over the states section of country where no to bacco was raised wholesale yrqoery teen drummed it out to the retail trade and leaf tobacco was sold in small quantities to the ionbuiper the same as tobacco and the matter became general through put the entire country The manu facuturjng nterp3tH were greafly so much so that the revenue on tobacco was reduced and many manufacturers became discouraged in their businesg ant were intfucpd to consolidate and form what is known as the American Tobacco Company the law vajsrt forue li from 1890 to igQTf and it was fount that the revenue on tobacco was re duced about twelve million of per year and in 1894 the law was replaced and leaf distribution stop ped but the fanners were allpwcd as they ever had been to sell their leaf tobacco to anybody they without any tax or penalty the as they sold their wheat cOrn pbtatpeg apple product The Bailey and btaniey law being about the same kind of a law that was passed in 1890 will have about same effect and simply give leaf dealers ural anybody jle the right to speculate on raw leaf tobacco without paying any tax this will reduce the amount of revenue on loaacco did during the 90s and will not advance the price on tobacco for the farmer During the years that a similar bill was in operation the price of tobac co remained unchanged Now this whole scheme ts vole catcher and notoriety booster now the law cannot be much benefit to the tarn the few independent and free farmers cannot conveniently drum out their tobacco in small quantities in statee and sections where there is no tobacco raised consequently it will be left to the warehousemen and leaf dealers if there should be any to put it on the market in small quantities and sell it to the consum er It should be understood that file most of the tobacco raisers are and have been into asso cutians and have put themselves un der dictators and directors anti they are not allowed to sell thsir tobacco only through the agents and mana gcrs of the association and have to keep the tobacco in large quantities as barriers against time trustNow we think that Stanley should at the next session of Congress have a law or an enabling act for the managers of the dark patch will be an informal recep tion in the school building Every citizen is invited to be present The object will be for teachers and pa trons to become acquainted Hours 8 to m Each pupil will need a tablet pencil and song book in addition to the regular grade books They will please bear this in mind and come prepared accordingly Song books may be purchased at the Greenville Mercantile store for each The following extract is from the rules which the Uoard of Trustees have adopted for the conduct of pupils on the school premises shall assemble within two min utes after the ringing of the bell No talking or loitering will be in the halls on the part of teachers or pupils No pupil shall be tardy or absent more than four times a mouth There has been perfected the County Board ot and the Graded School Board an agreement by which all persons within the school age holding com mon school diplomas may attend the Greenville High school free of tuition This arrangement also in eludes teachers within the school age We would be glad indeed to enroll every one eligible Our school offers a full four years course has three high school teachers a new and fully equipped physical la boratory and its graduates are ad mined to the State University examination To the patrons ot Greenville and the educational public in general Our new school building will be we will be ready to begin work Monday Sept 13 We hope that each patron will impress on his or her children the fact that the he bmUHne is arnpdel ptoe4 lie s and clc must ail within their power to keep it so The teachers will be very strict in the enforcement of rules relating to the preservation of the building We strongly recom mend that all pupils who contem plate entering the school for the first time enter at the beginning of though the child will not be six years of age till later in the term We think it best to either enter now or wait till the next school year The child who has never been in school can not enter the class with pupils who started even a month before him If a pupil late it would require the or ganization of a new class Twis is an unnecessary waste of time for the teacher in charge Let us urge that parents sec to it that their children attend every day in the term It is a bad in vestment indeed when money is spent to improve the school grounds and employ teachers and then chil dren not take advantage of it We as teachers can not be of any to the child out of school visit the school feel at home within its doqrg your children by your presence in their workshop and interest their work We leave to suggest that too often the child has not lljp JUst opportunity for study at home Ttyey need and freedorn outside natters and They can not accomplish much un less this be the case I want
