YEAR IN ADVANCEI DECEMBER Cherry Hi Disaster Prom such evidence os is now at hand the explosion in the St Paul mine seems to have been qntircly the result of carelessness or ignorance on the part of one or more of the miners themselves According to all the reports yet made the owners of the mine had taken all due in the way of inspection and constructions and hud made it us safi as such a place could lint some body set fire to a pile of hay anil the method lustily taken to extinguish the fire was so ill advised that the flames were brought in with the explosive gases which arc found in every deposit of soft coal That such a thing should happen indicates perhaps that the vintila tion and the oversight under which the miners were kept were not quite perfect but perfection is sometimes not to be attained in human affairs and there seems to be a general agreement that conditions in the mine as respects safety were on the whole about as good as could be made Certainly there has been no lack since the explosion of brave energetic and determined efforts to reach the imprisoned miners alive dead Illustrations of heroism have Ucen numerous and only too often did the carry their eagerness to save beyond the limits of utility as well as of wisdom with the result cf losing their own lives and so adding to the number of victims It is only the outcome of their efforts however that condemns their judgement their willingness to take what they knew to be desperate is none the less commendable be cause they failed More than willingly they faced death in HB most frightful form without a hope or expectation of any reward other thqn trie consciousness of doing for rnoe intcklced by no excitement of battle and far beyond the sound of cheers This was purest altruism the recognition of a duty where no obligation existed or at least where the obligation was much less than the determination to exhaust every possibility of rescue no matter how vague and remote before turn ing back Their fate caused no lessening of haste to follow and the work of rescue went on with the difficulty that of keeping the number of those who took part in it within the necessary limits These were magnificent displays of the highest courage and area sufficient answer to those pessimists who fear that the conditions ot modern life have done away with heroism The Overheated Nursery A word of warning is in order as to certain dangers pertaining to the from suninier to winter Most persons have spent the last few months practically in the open air If not actually outdoor they have at least kept windows open day and night without having to give the matter any especial thaughtr have been able to fill their lungs at any minute with fresh cool air As soon as there creeps into the the There is no medicine for stomach liver and blood lust as good as Golden Medical Discovery tight at night Further than this its onset in the autumn should be of the most gradual description Un less the winter is unusually harsh and early a room facing south will need very little artificial heat before Christmas When the crisp frosty mornings come turn the heat on for an hour or so and then when the sun gets round let that take the matter in hand it will do it much betterIn the room that should always be on the sunny side let the windows be thrown open every minute that the children are out of it and let one window be kept open when they arc in it Above all do not leave the management of the radiator in the h4nds of a chilly member of the family it s right that grandmothers room should be kept been re ceiving the calls of at least two men who have grown to consider rivals While she has some other callers several in fact those two are apparently in real deep and so have drifted some what apart as their interest in the girl has increased Both are fellows and neither so far as known had the special favor ot young woman Of course the boys have been keeping up with each other as to calls and one fellow determined to have some fun and at the same time probably boost his stock To accomplish this he has depositing in the yard of the young ladys home on the nights when his rival called a beer or whisky bottle These were hid but of course were found For some time there was no significance attached to the matter but it finally dawned on the girl that a bottle was never found except on the mornings following a visit of this particular man When she had observed this for a time she spoke to her friend about the matter He was of course surprised and rightly so and impressed his innocenc on the young lady In some way he was possessed with the idea that his rival was the cause of trouble and so he confided in one of his boy friends as he needed help to work up the case His friend accepted declared that he would see who was turning the trick and to accomplish it he secreted himself at a point of vantage on the nights when his friend called Two or three lonely vigils were dwellings with a loss of about 4600 The fire originated from a defective flue in the home of Assistant Chiet of Police George Wood The barking of the family dog awakened the inmates of the house and this alone prevented their irjiry The home of M F Moore on the east side of the burn ing building next took fire and for a while it appeared that the entire row on Broad street between Sec ond and Third streets was doomed The hose reel purchased a short time ago and stored away no one seemed to know where waS finally brought to the fire which was soon gotten under control Had the fire department been locat ed earlier In the morning the fire would have been confined to the dwelling in which it started It might have been possible for the bucket brigade to have or both of the houses but the men to have the hose to fight the fire came without their buckets As a result of this experi ence a volunteer been organized and they will drill until they become prehcient in the handling of mental depression which follows a severe injury or some disturbing emotion of the mindThe condition consists essentially in a want of equilibrium in the circa lotion the arteries losing their tone as a consequence of which the great mass of blood accumulates in the veins especially the large blood vessels of the abdomen The bruin and other vital organs are deprived of the necessary blood supply and arc thereby rendered incapable of performing their important functions properlyShock may exist any degree and the symptoms will vary accordingly from the pallor and slight famtness which one may feel momentarily m making a misstep or the receipt had news all the way up to sudden stoppage of the heart and death In shock of average intensity such as follows a severe injury the face is pallid the pulse is weak and rapid the skis is cool and often covered with a clammy perspiration the muscuar system is relaxed the sufferer is nauseated and sometimes vomits and the mental faculties and sensibilities are benumbed so that no pain is felt even though bones broken and flesh torn Not only is the surface cool or cold but the actual temperature of the body as measured by the thermometer is lowered sometimes to the extent of two or three degrees When shock depends upon a violent mental emotion such as fear or the receipt of sudden bad news or upon a severe injury as that in a railroad accident or when shot the simptoms appear suddenly but when it follows a surgical operation Its appearance may be delayed several hours Its degree depends not only upon the seat of it A blow on the abdomen will more severe shock than a much worse injury to an extremi ty or even to the head Treatment of shock calls for the service of a physician for It consists in the administration of powerful remedies to restore the tone in the relaxed asd often the injection of salt solution but thing be done white awaiting the physician The sufferer should not be moved he should lie flat he should have air and the usual crowd of the should be dispersed The eyes should be shielded from light Hot cloths should be aplicd to the ex tremities and over the heart and if he can swallow he should be allow ed
