KY THURSDAY MAY 5 1910 50c PER YEAR IN ADVANCE I i Mr Drexels Costly Breakfast In spite of the reduction in the price of eggs butter ham mutton corn lour potatoes and other table comtnodites as shown by the comparisons in the morning news paper Mr Anthony J Drexel is re ported as quitting New York in gust because he was charged 175 for a breakfast consisting of a cup of tea and two eggs Me that he had some bread hut that is supposed to be thiuAii in even at the WaldorfAstoria Our sympathies are extended to Mr Drexel His indignation is justified That breakfast even when ordered by a man worth 60000000 was outrageously high and it probe him more than he says it did He undoubtedly tipped his liberally and submitted also to extortion from the brigand who offered him the hat he had taken without warrant at the dining room door not to mention the assistant brigand who held open the dour of the motor cars which took Mr Drex el to his steamer Altogether his breakfast cost him at least 3 50 It is a hopeful sign when multi millionares protest at the extortion practiced in hotels and restaurants but we wish Mr Drexel has made his protest to the manager of the hotel reckless expediture money by the rich has increased the cost of travel far more than 100 per cent in the last decade And it is not alone in the prices upon the bill of fare The willingness ot these persons to throw their money away for unnecessary services in public places had led proprietors to license robbery in forms Frequenters of hotels and restaurants now not only pay for their rooms and meals more than they ever did before but they pay the wages of waiters chambermaids porters cloakroom men and other persons supposed to be employes establishment eYtedby these people Custom made it as inexorable as state or city taxes You are not allowed to take your hat and overcoat into a dining room They are put in charge of a man who pays the pro prietor for the privilege of robbing you when you go to reclaim them The toilet room the barbel shop the bootblacking room are all in by men holding letters of marque and reprisal They do not beg for largess they demand ran iqra While our sympathies are with Mr Drexel we must repeat that it is men of his class who have made the wholesale piracy possible and it is he and his fellow millionaires who must lead the reform If the rich will cease spending their money like drunken sailors that which likes to ape them will follow suit Children and Clothes The Juggernaut of fashion never so cruel as when it is the jjheipless children who are thrown beneath the wheels If adults choose to make this disposition of them selves well and sacri rice is at least voluntary and open eyed but let the children be pro tected until the day of personal choice has dawned If the personal of babies children could be consulted on the subject of clothing they would be found unanimously sane in their de mand for comfortable fit adequate warmth and suitability to the pur lultf of extreme youth and if given the ballot they would move to the polls as one united body and vote down the mothers who sacrificed to style or to cutenegs or to the hardening process or to any other bothersome theory Among the many fallacies on the subject of proper clothing to which small children are victimized per haps the worst as well as the hard est to understand is that which say that if only the chest is well pro tected the rest of the body may ruthlessly exposed to the element This theory it is which accounts the small bodies on meets in winter from which a pr r of bare bluemottled coat The legs are bare with the exception of a short thin sock It is only fair to admit that the mothers who send their children out in winter dressed in this manner ore a rapidly lessening number hut who still cling to the faslr ui arc surely not aware that since chil dren have a larger skin surface proportion to their than have adults they are more susceptible to chills and not less They also make the curious of reasoning that because bron chitis attacks the chest it only in vades the system through the chest and hence they only protect that one spot and leave all other open to attack By this course they prove their ignorance of the fact that a chill to any part of the body may give rise to bronchitis and also of the other very important fact that in children a chill may have many bad consequences be sides a socalled cold or respir story trouble The sudden digestive disturbances of children should properly be often traced back to a chilling of the sur face of the body rather than to an error in diet Properly clad chil dren will digest better as well as have fewer colds than the unfortun ate barelegged ones Furniture Moldisgs Wall Paper We carry on our floors And in our ware of the canal call ed for the removal of 103795000 cubic yards of a few weeks ago the total excavation done to date under America occupancy had reached that The 71 000000 cubic yards remaining to be excavated represent the addition al work necessitated by the enlarge ment of the canal which was upon during the Roosevelt ad ministration TilE Canadian government is giv ing consideration to a project for a v f fright traffic railway to Hudson Hay made An unusual feature is that new would have to be op crated to its full capacity for about two months of the year during the moving of the anarchistic sentiment is unquestioned ORIGINALLY the interstatecom merce commission had jurisdiction only over railroads Gradually the scope of the authority of that body Chas been enlarged until now it covers express companies sleeping car companies pipe and for purposes boat lines The in clusion of telegraph and telephone companies as common carriers of information so far as they engage in interstate business is necessary to a complete scheme ot applying regulation to national publicservice corporations By a combination of nnsurgents and democrats the pend ing administration railroad modified in the house to include telegraph and telephone companies among the common carriers which are made the subjects of regulation by the measure The vote on the amendment was 109 to 76 the neg
