strengthens the power of the will was shown by recent experiments in Austria To determine what eftect the fatigue from a long march might have upon the shooting eiacicncy of trained soldiers the Austrian sch ol of musketry recently had a detachment of fifty men all over two years service do sixtyfive miles in eight hours the return being against a strong head wind Before and after the march they each fired ten rounds at a targ et representing a section of twenty six men in skirmishing order lying down at 500 paces Before the march the detachment made hits on nineteen figures after the march thirty ei ht hits on sixteen figuresThe experiment was then repeat ed with a section of fortytwo non commissioned officers before and after a twenty three hours exercise in the field during which thirtythree miles were covered This section consisting principally of marksmen made eightyone hits on twentyone out of twentysix figures before start ing and sixtytwo hits ou twenty fig ures after their return But the raw recruit when to a similar test of endurance fails to hit the target at all He is incap able of the effort of will and firm re solve to hit which renders the trained soldier a formidable antagonist even when his Strenth is exhausted by hunger and fatigue Asthma Among all physical ills asthma is perhaps the most irritating It is hard to endure and terrible to ob certain shrub or flower Indeed a the specialities of these unfortunate people are without number The asthmatic however has two great sources of comfort One is the reasonable hope of reaching a good old age the other is the fact that great help is to be found for him in a strictly hygienic mode of living The better air he breathes both day and night the simpler his diet and the more wisely crowded hall where republican state convention holding its days session squatted near the door Dick Oglesby rose and announced I am informed that a distinguished son of Illinois and one whom Illi nois will ever delight to honor is present and I wish to move that this body invite him to a seat on the stand The motion was carried with a shout anda rush was made for the man near the door who was lifted bodily and passed forward over the heads of the dense throng Quickly he was seated smiling and considerably rumpled on the plat form Later on Oglesby rose again and said There is an old democrat outside who has something he wishes to present to this convention Receive ill shouted the throng of delegates So the door opened and inwalkcd John Hanks bearing on his shoulders two rough old fence rails over which rose a banner in scribbed Two Rails from a Lot Made by Abraham Lincoln and John Hanks in the Sangamon Bot tom in the Year 1830 He was received with yells of delight Then came shouts for a speech from coin who rose diffidently and said Gentlemen I you want to know something about those things Well the truth is John Hanksand I did make rails in the Sangamon bottom I dont know whether we made those rails or not fact is I dont think they are a credit to the makers But I do know this I made rails then and I think I could make better ones than these now After all this carefully worked up enthusiasm the resolution offer icd byJohn M Palraer passed i by the delegates 4 tlllfnois fof and the del a 2jgates from this state to the Chicago convention are use all honorable means his nomi nation and to cast the vote ot the state as a unit for him On this foundation was built the candidacy of Lincoln for president though there was a good deal of antiLincoln sentiment amnng Illi nois republicans The national con vention met in Chicago Lincoln was made the party nominee for the presidency two days later Is ExtraVagait Prof Mungterberg writing upon Ameflcan problems amount of dust in the atmosphere e rcd sunsets Bishops ring and the singular noctiluminous clouds that were frequently observed after the crup tion of Krakatoa arc especially to be looked for The Yacciae Treatment of Colds In a former article was explained the theory of the newly discovered opsonic or vaccine treatment fectious diseases and it was shown how the remedy is obtained from the patient himself It was then stated that although in some cases a stock vaccine could be used applicable to all cases of a certain disease better results are usually obtained if the vaccine is prepaired fresh for each case from the special strain of bacteria in the patients own body This is especially necessary in the treatment of colds and of the tend ency thereto for it has been found that the symptoms of an acute cold or of chronic catarrh are caused by several different species of bacteria and the vaccine good for one kind is of little or no efficacy in the others The only way to find out which bacteria are at work is to make a culture from the patients own nasal or throat secretions and when this is obtained it can be used as the proper vaccine The usual form of pneumonia croupous or labor pneumonia is generally caused by a specific germ and a stock vaccine may be used if necessary but it is better to use the own bacteria even here there are usually certain pccu larities in each case The treatment u Of pneumonia in this way is very recent but the few cases that have this means In regard to colds and catarrhs the matter is not so simple It been found that no less than six tinct forms of bacteria may produce an acute or chronic catarrh There is one that has a preference for the nose another for the back of the throat and still another for the bronchial tubes but no one of them has a monopoly of any region and sometimes a member ot them are working together in the sane perfect harmony In the of a cold therefore one must first what bacteria arc fault and whether one or several kinds Then the corresponding stock vaccine or a combination of several is given so as to lose no time while a new vaccine made from the patients own germs is being Not only has it been found to cut short acute colds and benefit or cure chronic catarrhs but it seems probable that permanent immulity may be secured by an opsonic injection given every six sleuths All this is tentative how ever antI although the method promises much it is still too early to speak with confidence of future results Commissioners Site By virtue of a Judgment directed to me which fanned from
