of what that flag stands for V AUGUSTUS E WILLSON Governor of Kentucky Diseases if ChiMtai Uiiecessirjr The idea prevails among people that children must have the ordinary diseases of childhood and that it is better to expose them as soon as possible It is an old fashioned belief and the object is to protect children from in fection instead of exposing them to it As children arc more suscepti bpi to variations in temperature than adults so are they also more apt to contract certain diseases The sur est way to protect them against in fection is not to expose them This is extremely difficult where there are large gatherings of children such as at mblic schools or in thickly lated districts but if the health of a child is maintained by pursuing pro hygienic measircs as to food bathing sleep fresh ait and sun shine it is safe to say that it runs a small risk of contracting one of the infectous diseases even when expos ed to it We should strive to de the tissues of the body proper that a traveling man cannot put tips in his expense ac count that ruling will do more to ward breaking up the tipping sys anything else you could mention It doesnt require moral courage or a physical Times who is traveling the Celestial be empire He writes At the first inn where hot cakes were being sold my men rested There was a temple here and 1 went across to sec it The priest politely invited me into the guest room He probably did not expect me to enter but I did so and fount in a small room some twenty men smoking opium or not drowsing after the debauch And it was the priest who had supplied the opium and the opium pipes Could the flijddhiat faith as exemp lificd in its degraded ministers in China sink much lower On the fourth day out we the Kuan Yin Tang the hall of the goddess of mercy a fine temple which is however in a filthy state Its two hexagonal towers arc used as a common lodging house In this degraded temple the goddess herself and all her female attendants n are represented with the smallest of or oth d small feet of force and even of beauty adorn the walls of this decaying building which the expenditure of a few hun dollars would restore to its pristine glory A few cents would Wai make it clean but the cents are not GT spent It is no business Wtt Opium is smoked in the dirty TE Hu Yin Miao one of the temples I have seen in China It lies within an mclosure comparable with that of the Temple of Heaven in Pekin and has splendid halls and courts and pavilions Yet what a ruin The roofs have decayed or fallen in the triumphal archways are tottering Manure is dried in courtyards fit for a palace Barbers and beggars frequent the pavilions have seen no more striking cvi dence of decay Truly Buddhism in China is sadly deteriorating Deal at home as Browne the great medical authority on foods says about brain and muscle building There is one kind of food that seems to me of marked value as a food to the brain and to the whole body throughout childhood and adolescence youth and that is oatmeal Oats are the most all the cereals being richer in fats organic phosphorus and lecithinsHe oatmeal is gaining ground with the welltodo of Great Britain He speaks of it as the mainstay of the Scottish laborers diet and says it pro nutritious- of II duces a bigboned oped mentally energetic race His experiments prove that j good oatmeal such as Quaker Oats not only furnishes the best food for the human being but eating it strengthens and en gland is intimately connected with the nourishing processes of the body In conclusion he says It seems probable therefore that the bulk and brawniness off the Northerners meaning the Scotch has been in some measure due to the stimulations of the thyroid gland by oatmeal porridge in childhood The Scotch eat Quaker because it is the best of all oat i meals largos the thyroid glandthis Oats well devel s- ryt t r V z w h A Wickliffe President C E Martin Vice fJohn T Reynolds Jr Cashier Ed S Wood
