They citizens of Muhlenberg McLean and Ohio counties Two were by Alney McLean and one by Lewis Kincheloe Every officer and private was a great credit to his company but none proved more of hero than did Capt Ephriam Me Lean Brank of Greenville K M Blank was a lieutenant in the company farmed in November 1814 by Alney McLean and which few weeks later took part in the last battle n the second war with EnglandThe of Capt Brands heroic act in the Battle of New Orleans on January 8 18x5 is one of the most thrilling incidents enacted by any Muhlenberg man Under the head of Muhlenberg county Collins in his History of Kentucky published in 1875 says E M Brank still living 1871 while the battle of Orleans wits raging mounted the breastworks to the British To his family and intimate friends the Captain described in a mast realistic manner the part he played in this battle and their de sceudcRis still tell in his own way the story of Capt Brank on the breastworks Capt own version of the incident altho never written was Q nearly all details it is said the same as the one given by a British officer who took part in the battle and which ifhere requoted I have not been able to learn the name of this literary officer His interesting description was quoted by Walter Walcott in The Republic of as early as 1832 and later also republished but slightly modified by various Kentucky papers clip pings of which are still preserved in he Prpnk fmpjlyi This description of Capt act is quoted in McElroys Kentucky in the Nations History published in 1909 where as far s ram aware it appears not only the first time In a printed book but iu a volvne that is probably the most interestingly written history of the State McElroys following the quotation page 365 reads This manuscript is Kentucky Riflemen in the Battle of New Durretts Collection The hero here described was E M Brank of Greenville By way of introduction McElroy says The effect produced upon the British army by the daring cool and young children arc more susceptible to this troubls than are adults although it may attack persons of aUf age It is a serious matter for the reason that the great majority of cases of lifelong deafness may be traced to a neglected orim properly handled attack of middle ear trouble On the other hand if otitis media is properly treated permanent deafness may almost certainly be avoided There many conditions that may cause acute middleear compli cations Among the first may be mentioned grippe that most dis asterous of all in its after consequences Then come scarlet fever measles pneumonia in fact almost any ill ness to which children are subject Sometimes the cause of an attack is mechanical shoebutton or some small object introduced into the e r by the child while at play or water allowed to m during sea bathing Children who have pharyngeal adenoids arc very subject to inflam mations of the car There iire alT ways plenty of germs itr the throat and ear passages even of the
