again Spain Is al- ¬ ready governed by a Parliamentary body and the infant ruler is ruler only in name The deposition of Dom Pedro of Bratil has brought directly home to the Royal family of Spain the pronounced a Republic Murua Senor said to a reporter when asked what Spain would take for Cuba that negotiations had not reached such a point that he could give figures or talk about a price Would Spain take 200 000000 was askod him I can say that I am positivo Spain would give an offer of 200000000 serious consideration That amount would enable Spain to relieve her financial distress and em- Mambrino of the lofty style and the fore- ¬ father of some of the liest American trotters Bat according to the Stud Book Mambrino was only foaled in 1768 and as a foal he could scarcely have been the subject of Stubbs first picture of that year In the Sporting Magazine for January 1821 Btabbs portrait for Mambrino is given and in the the opinion of the notice he was a sire more calculated to get hacks hunters and coach horses than racehorses This was no doubt being wise after the event as by thai time Mambrino had made his mark as the sire of coach horses The writer then goes oh to say that Mambrino went in remarka- ¬ ble good trotting form and we have beard it averred that he could trot fourteen uiik in one hour no common qualification for a racer Iord Grosvenor had many capital coach horses from him and this horse may 1 said to have beta the father of the present highly improved and blixsllike breed of EngHeb coach Four centuries ago Margaret Rat horse ion discerned the beauty of horse trotting of his own courage without force of spurs and wrote in an admiring strain of some country hackneys she had seen and if the old records are searched our native horse would appear to have accomplished many noble pertornauacas With the last trotting meeting at Alexandria Park the executive may 1m satitieil as fair fields It contested the majority of the events is also satisfactory to note that there was an entire absence of that rowdyism which heretofore did so much to bring trotting At the same time the into disrepute progress of trotting must necessarily lie slow until the proclivities of to day were not satis fied by racing under Jocky Club and Na tional Hunt rules the success of pony and galloway racing sufficiently attests and there is no reason at all to doubt that ij some well known sportsman were to patronize trotting that form of amusement would very speedily occupy a naore prom ¬ inent position than it has ever yet clone In England no less fan America there is an intimate connection between the trotter and the even- - day harness horse fhid that is one of the reasons ssssigned for the poularity of trotting on the other side The match trtoter is to the ordinary harness horse what the steeplechaser is to the hunter and the Americans take up the former as readily as we do the latter Hiram Woodruff claimed for his eoantry- men that they had a paragan
