Offer- - a BcsolatianDaljaCa lux or Information is to Their Washington Aug 11 From day to da j-- the country and congress has tricked by the promise put forth that HI agreement was reached or about to Ik- - reached and that the republicans f the would be called in to a conferees to morrow This ran along until Friday when Senator Hill suc ceeded in making an issue by offering a resolution calling for information from the conferThe issue thus made so cleverly by Senator Hill has been reinforced by Senator Aldrich and there is little doubt of the adoption of one or the other of the resolutions when a vote is reached Senator Jones of Arkansas says that when a report has been finally agreed upon in conference committee the tariff bill will come to the senate first as the body which granted the last re- ¬ quest for a conference Should the senate ever get the tariff bill into its possession again Senator Gorman would - in a position to defy President and the house and he could dictate his terms instead of having to listen to further suggestions or dictations of the man in the white house It is this very situation that house conferees will undoul tedly avoid It is almost certain that the policy of delay marked out for them will lie continued in a refusal of the house conferees for the present to join the senate con- in a report of agreement or dis- ¬ So long as the house herit conferees refuse to make a report the bill will remain in conference unless the house should take like action with the senate in discharging its eonf It can be seen therefore that while the legislative position of the bill is somewhat complicated by the possibil ¬ ities of action or inaction on the part of the senate or hajsaae conferees it is clearly apparent that so long as the tariff bill remains unacted upon by the house conferees it can be withheld from the hands of Senator Gorman and the eonservnth Senator Hill Friday might gave out the following statement in regard to his action Friday in reference to the tariff bill My object in opposing the resolu- ¬ the posi¬ tion to day was t tion of the tariff measure Kvery days delay is faaju ious to the business interests of the country and the bill should be disposed of one wiv or another The conference committee ought to know each others mind by this time and if they can not agree the fact of such disagreement should lie reported to the two bunses when if no under ¬ standing can e reached upon a bill eongreaa should promptl- - adjourn and give the country a We have now leen in session for nearly a whole year and have had nmple opportunity to legislate A senator or member who dies not know exactly what he wants to do on the tariff question after all this time spent in useless deliberation is unfit to rep- ¬ resent any const ugh We We hare d want action Let the two houses take the bill out of the hands of the r conference committee and proceed to vote at once upon the disagreeing provis- ¬ ions and if no agreement can be reached let the whole matter go over until the next session and let col adjourn and give the business interests of the country a chance to recuperate from the present depression Congress must arouse from its lethargy and should act in accordance with public sentiment and not in de- ¬ fiance of it Either pass a tariff bill or adjourn and go home These are my sentiments and I number 9 is met everywhere It still has its influence in lierman customs and German belief Ir the Scandinavian mythology we find groups of nine walkyries nine dises nine giant mermaids or women of the sea nine mothers of the god IleimdelL nine virgins of the Menglod Freyja and nne dwarfs In the middle ages nine horoes were usually grouped together as is to be seen on the beautiful fountain at remarkable as the bloody host which while it flour-¬ ished probably caused the death of more Jews in this country th un any other individual superstition directed against that people It is described ts an appearance of blood flowing from bread when bitten but it manifested itself in other articles of food besides brxad and sometimes seemed to drop from the air It will lie remembertd by historical readers that while Alexander was besieging Tyre this prodipy and the other one of blood rain oc- ¬ curred in one day much to the con- ¬ sternation of the soldiers More curious than blood rain in re gurd to the mere color was the redvioUt and grass green shower which fell in the south of France many years ago and made a patchwork of the big lake whereon ita manifestation was the more noticeable This shower airain was caused by untold myriads of differently colored animalcnlcs Spidt r showers are another curiosity worthy of mention in this connection Tie spiders are gossamers and all those who have rend Whites Natural History of Selborce will call to mind his description of the showers he observed ne of the he telh us continued for nearly a whole day and the gossa mers dsceiiled from a surprising height for when one gentleman as- ¬ cended a hill near at hand some three hundred feet high he found that the spiders were dropping from a region in the atmosphere that was still beyond the reach of his gaze Dr Martin Lister named this aerial spidxr the bird from the facility with which it can traverse the air and upon one oc oasion when he observed a shower of them at York he ascended to the top of the minster and found that even at that altitude he was still below thir lovel that they were descending from some region above that standpoint Darwin another observer of spider showers descrilies one he saw in l i when on board the Ileagle at the mouth of the La Plata river when the vessed was some sixty mile fnm land and he seems to have been the first to notice that cah parachute of gossamer carried a spider aeronaut for he not only observed them arrive on board he ship but he also saw them reproduce a new parachute and on this frail bark launch forth again on the boaaaji of the palpitating air These gossamer showers are great mysteries and once seen cannot very readily be forgotten for the air on these occasions becomes literally crowded with the tiny para- ¬ chutes mentioned which are composed of a few threads of almost invisible gossamer with a small but livelv spider attached This may be regarded as the most beautiful thine- - in strano- bhowers I ¬ ¬
