Several years ago ilaj ir Dutterw orth was prosecuting attorney in southern Ohio and he had the opportunity to test his theorv regarding the discrimination that should be used iu dealiu vuth men newly launched into crimv. A young farmer was arrested for pasting tounterfeit s, as the 50 cei. no e was known, and the case was put i.. the hands of Major Uuttenvorth. The young man told his story. He had saved several hundred dollars, had left his wife and little children and had taken a boat down the Mibsir&ippi river, purposing to beitle on a new farm he was to buy with his hard earned bavines. On the boat he met an extremely pleasant and well dressejl stranger, who learned of his mission aud proceeded to make himself n a moment of extreme agreeanie. confidence the stranger told the oung man of a large quantity of money he had which was made from plates that hid formerly belonged to the government aud which the government had long since sought to recover, etc The young man was struck by that remarkable method ot acquiring wealth when lie had toiled and saved for years to get a few hundred. In a burst of generosity the stranger offered to exchange some of his money for greenbacks belonging to his new found tnend, so that the lat ter should have two dollars for every one he possessed. The bait was tempting and tho fish bit. At the lauding the well dressed man disappeaied from tho boat and the dupe became alarmed. He became suspicious of his new money aud was afraid to oiler it iu payment ot his passage. He, too, left the boat, determined to go back home. He started to walk and became footbore. He began shoving the money to buy something to eat, the counterfeit was discovered and the arrest made. Major Uutterw orth took in the tusation. "I told that ouug man," he said, in relating the story, "that if God had made him a dishonor man he had failed to put a sign on hi luce. I told him to j,o home to his wife and children as an houebt man. He could tcaitely realize that he had escaped the penitentiary. He went home, and a more honest or better citizen I do not know toJay. That man had not the heart of a criminal, but if he had been sent to the penitentiary his children would have been disgraced for life and probably he would have belonged to the crimiual class for life." fct.
