Boston Transcript. to-da- THE FLORIDA GOPHER. ,It Is a Turtle and Live In the Ground With Itattlesaakcs mill Lizards. "The most interesting creature I ever saw in Florida," said a New York man who spent the winter there, "was the burrowing turtle. This turtle Is peculiar to Florida and it is an important factor in the doniestic economy of the cracker population, for the Florida cracker dotes on the gopher that's what they call this burrowing turtle and thinks it is the finest Jliingin the edible line that ever existed. I couldn't agree with him on that, though, for I didn't approve of the company the gopher is in the habit of keeping, and 1 can't see how anything can be real good and keep bail company. The gopher digs a deep hole and a large one in the ground and remains in it all the time except when out grazing, for this reptile is a grazer anil paslures just like a cow, except that it vton't eat anything but wild grass. This turtle doesn't like the vicinity of water, and selects the high, dry, sandy ridges for Its home. Its cracker neighbors say that it never drinks water which would also be a habitual characteristic of the cracker if he could always get something stronger than water. "Another thing that induces the gopher to dig its burrow out of the reach of water is that in those dry and sandy places the rattlesnake and various kinds of hideous-lookin- g lizards are most plentiful, and the gopher is never happy unless its burrow is shared by a colony of either one or the other of these, if not of both. Find a gopher hole and uncover it, and you will.be sure to find from half a dozen to a dozen or more rattlesnakes, and maybe 15 or 30 lizards of various sizes and colors and degrees of ugliness occupying it with its proprietor. The gopher plainly loves the companionship of these deadly things, although it is itself as meek ami harmless as a dove. "No dweller in those parts of Florida ever goes anywhere about without a bag slung over his or her shoulder. This is to put gophers in. as some are pretty mire to be found pasturing in the wild grass patches. The moment a gopher is surprised by a person with a bag it abuts itself securely in its shell, nnd the cracker picks It up and tumbles it into the bag. The gopher is likewise trapped by digging a hole close to the entrance of its burrow and sinking a barrel or box into it and covering the trap with loose twigs. When the gopher comes out and starts on a foraging trip it tumbles into the trap and can't get out. What terrapin are to the epicure, the gopher is to the Florida cracker. The gopher deposits from 50 to 100 green eggs in a hole in the Hand, and if the cracker does not unearth them and add them to his bill of fare, which is his habit, the eggs will hatch, and in three weeks the sand will be covered with young gophers, about the size of n quarter of n dollar, scrambling in all directions to hide away from hawks and other birds of prey, which are particularly fond of the little rep-tieand keep the future colony of gophers within bounds." X. Y. Sun. Crueinrd Women. The Elder Dempster liner Sobo, which arrived at Liverpool recently from Op- obo, brought full particulars of the into the Quae country made by the troops of the Niger coast protectorate. "As the expedition marched through the country signs of fetish worship and human sacrifices were everywhere seen. At AHar-Ekone officer counted no fewrr than six human beings who had been cither crucified on the trees in the town or other-vis- e killed. In most cases the victims were women. One of 'he most revolting sights was the body of a poor woman who had been tied to a tree in such a way as to inflict great pain. She had been starved to death, but a quantity of food was still before the dead body, having been placed in the poor creature's ight to add to her torments. The white ollicers told the chiefs and people that they must abolish such customs. The expedition had a marvelous effect in restoring the whole country to order and peace by destroying the power of tho fetish Quae They have for yenrs been a most ferocious people, the women being as cruel as the men. London Daily News. high-living s, Amerlcnn Heraldry. foreigner coming into England is amenable to the laws of honor of his own country and the authorities controlling them in that country so long ns he retains his original nationality. Those foreign laws and the laws of armorial registration and control vary considerably, but there is one fundamental code which is now and has been for some centuries admitted practically from one end of Europe to the other. With countries outside Europe one need not trouble. American heraldry is beneath contempt (I do not refer to the armory of American scions of English families), nnd the barbaric totemism of scmicivili7.ed countries, though the origin of our ownheraldry is hardly sufficiently evolved to be considered as armory. The one fundamental European rule is this that arms are a matter of honor, nnd that the conferring of honor and honors is a prerogative of sovereignty. Notes and Queries. lIlTeet of Diet on Disposition. Some authorities hold to the idea that a child's disposition is largely governed by his diet, citing the gentleness g races against the of the quarreling of meat-eatin- g children in proof. While this may or may not be true, it is certain that wholesome food reacts to produce a wholesome temperament. CALDWELL'S cent qualities of leadership and the righteousness of the cause that he champions, combined with his vital and unusual eloquence, he has succeeded in creating an immense and devoted following- in the United States. There are orators and orators, and, like tho stars, "one difTereth from another in glory." To tho man who has heard the average stump speaker Mr. Bryan's eloquence is a revelation, gratifying and astoundine. You may enjoy listening to this man or that. His platitudes are and the phrases which he coins are tickling to the intellectual palate. But there are two very severe tests in real oratory under which the every day expert almost invariably wilts. Come away from an ordinary political meeting and endeavor to recall the most striking portions of a speech, or to line up in your mind's eye the general drift of your man's effusion. Yon will meet failure in almost every instance. To be sure, there will be a vague remembrance of pleasant periods, glossy and succulent at the time, but it will be difficult to lay your finger on a single lucid train of thought which has vividly impressed your mind. AnotliRrtest, and one more rigid still, is to read a speech and watch its influence as you read. At the time the man's fervidness of manner, his flexibility of voice or grace of gesture may have warmed and excited you, but yon will discover that his sentences in cold type do not waken a fraction of that enthusiasm which prompted you to applaud and approve so liberally. Everyone who has heard Mr. Bryan speak knows that ho survives these tests. There are very few Democrate, or even Republicans, whom you can approach and find ignorant of the sentiments of tho last Presidential candidate, and who cannot repeat some of the most powerful and tense of the utterances which gave them to the world. You can pick up a newspaper and read a speech by this same individual, and you will find that not an atom of the fire and stimulating properties has been lost by their transfer to paper. You read, and are electrified and enthused just as though the author was pleading in his most sonorous tones, and you were occupying a front seat, drinking in his marvelous eloquence. It haa been proven that these addresses g have almost as great a ability when read in the quietude of the study as when listened to in the magnetic intoxication of the convention hall. In the latter case tho speaker ia so fluent and his metaphors and figures so lightning-lik- e as to compel your utmost attention for a full appreciation. You have no time to digest or question them. Count them over the next morn ing and you will And them just as log' ical and impressive as When they were high-Boundivote-gainin- , PEPSlN iYRUPINDICESTION.
