SANFORD BY GOEBEL Malicious MisrtDcesenlallons Set at Rest by Statement of Coroner Tanrin A prominent Republican physician Owenboro is credited with making statements to the country people of Daviess cotmty intending to mislead them concerning the killing of John Sandford by Senator Goebel Others have purposely misrepresented the unfortunate affair to the detriment of Senator Goebel In other counties the same tactics have been employed Particularly ha this been true in Henderson county At the request of friends and in order to get a true statement of the difficulty between Sanford and Goubel of which so much has been written and said Air B S Morris of Henderson wrote AY W Tarvin then and now the coroner of Kenton county asked him for tin facts Mr Morris received from Coro ncr Tarvin the following reply Office 012 MadIson Avenue Tele phone No IOResidence lit E fifteenth street Coroner of Kenton conn ty Ky W W Tarvin MD Covlugton Ky Sept 25 18Y1B- S Morris Esq Friend Morris Yours of the 22d received and Ill try to give you the Information you desire as you are correct in supposing that 1 wits coroner at the lime of theJEtanford killing and that I held the inquest in that case I am unable to state the cauee of the beginning of the enmity between Goebel and Sanford as opinions dilfor widely Some say it was because of a proxy at a convention some that it was on account of the law Goebel had passed reducing the tolls on turnpike in which Sanford was a stockholder and some that it was because Goobel was instrumental in having the city funds removed from Sanfords bank and deposited in another bank At any rate after the feeling first started it grew steadily and the fact that some of Sanfords closest friends were identified with the faction which always opposed Goebel did not help matters any and Sanford said he would rather kill Goebel or be killed But to come down to the actual cause of the kilting The daily Coin mouwcalth had for several mouths been publishing articles roasting Goe bel at every opportunity and Goebel was informed that John Sauford was the author of thQAA articles In fact if I remember rightly Goebel was shown the original copies and they were in Sanfords handwriting At Inst probably exasperated beyond en durance Goebel wrote and caused to be published in a little weekly sheet issued every Saturday an article in which he referred to Sanford in severe terms and that was the immediate cause of the meeting On the day of the encounter about I oclock Goebel and W J Hendricks at that time attorney general were coming to town together and on FIrth street met Frank Helm president of the First National bank and as Hen dricks wished to get a check cashed they all three continued out Fifth and up Madison avenue toward the bank As they came in the vicinity of the bank they saw John Sanford standing at the foot of the steps leading into the bank with one foot on the lower step and leaning upon the railing at one side Sanford was leaning upon the railing with hiq left arm with his right hand in his front pantspocket The three Goedel Hendricks and Helm came up to the loot qf the steps and halted Helm spoke to Sanford who responded awl alter a reminder from Helm Sauford spoke to lIen ilricks held out lIla left hand with his right still in his pocket and shook hands with him Then turning toward Goebel who was standing three or four feet from hlmpvith his overcoat over his left arm and his right hand In his front pantspocket Sandford said I understand that you assume the re gpousibilliy of that newspaper article Goebel answered promptly I do whereupon Sanford withdrew his right hand from his pocket holding a revol ver thrashed it forward quickly toward Goebels abdomen and fired the hail cutting through beliefs coat and lower edge of his vest Goebel made one stepbackward dropped Iris over coat and withdrawing his hand right from his pocket also holding revo ver threw his hand up nnd fired an sweringihe first shot eo quickly that it almost sounded as an echo and the ball struck Sanford in till forehead making a fatal wound Besides Helm and Hendricks there was a number of people upon the street who witnessoi the shooting some of them strangers to both men and the evidence clearly proved that Sanford drew hia revolver and tired the first shot My jury was composed of six good citizens one an exsheriff ccting one the principal of district public school i and one who lisa since served a term as president of the board of aldermen land is now county assessor und the other three were honest reliable work- Ingmen and that jury brought In a yordict that time shot was fired by Goe tel in selfdefense The county judge a Republican lucId a preliminary examination and evidenceIo kill Goebel and had drawn and fired first Two attempts wero made to la diet Goebel but the grand juries re- fittedt to ret rnlrue bills each time I Hoping tItle Is a clear explanation ol a they vill tell you that while they would be glad to vote for Mr Brown they can not afford to throw their votes away Now I am going to tell you what would be the result A vote cast for Mr Taylor will go out before the countryv as a Republican vote and then the Republicans throughout e nation will takecourhgeand saythat Kentucky will be Re publican in 1900 Applause That is the construction that willTjeplaced upon the vote outside of this State but if TOU will elect Mr Goebel then it will beknownthat this State is going to be Democratic in 1900 and you will get hope and in spiration from this to fight the battle of the people Ap plause The fight in this State is b tweeU Goebel and Tay lor Hurrah for Goebel Goebel time The man who votes for Mr Taylor votes to place Republican in the chair fqr four years votes to place in the hands of Republi cans the machinery of your State votes to place in the h onds of a Republican Governor the authority to sign the certifi cates or credentials of the electors j votes to place in the Governors chair a Republicanwho for lour years wilL be there ready to give credentials to a Republican Senator ifa vacancy occurs in the Senate That is what you are re srarded as doing if you elect a Republican Governor A Democrat who votes for Mr Brown simply aids in the election of that Republican Governor even though i he does not vote for him directly Applause You tell me that you ar interested in Democratic prin ciples Why the Convention that nominated Mr Brown re affirmed the Chicago platformand was kind enough toex press confidencein me but my friends that is not the way to express your opinion of Democratic principles It is not in platforms and tickets that you express your confidence but in principle If there is a man here who believes that he can help Democratic principles by voting either for Mr Brown or Mr Taylor I want to express it as my solemn judgment that the man who does it will injure Democratic principles and the chance for its success Applause And when I express this opinion I am not expressing my own honest opinion I am expressing the opinion of Sena tor Jones the Chairman of the Nationial Committee and Governor Stone of Missouri who stands next to Jones on the National Committee I express to you the opinion of the National committee that a victory for Goebel will help Dem ocratic principles But my friends I need not dwell on this subject you are so unanimous now that there is no need of my talking further about it Applause I am going to add just one more word I want to say to u that in your enthusiasm dont forget that you have two tickets to elect your State ticket and your Legislative ticket Your Legis lative ticket is important also because your Legislature will selecta Senator and that Senator will vote for six years to come That Senator will serve through the entire adminis tration that will be elected in 1900 and I want you to be sure to see to it that Joseph Blackburn is elected Senator from this State If you will roll up a large majority for the Goebel ticket and then send Blackburn to the Senate I will forgive you for every bad thing you may do from this time hence Pro longed applause Following Mr Bryan calls for Goebel brought the next Governor to the front of the stand He spoke very briefly but with characteristic vigor He especially urged the Democrats to elect a Legislative ticket that would reelect JQ 1backburn to time Senate lIe urged the reelection of Mr Combs to the loyer house having eervedwell in the last Legislature and whom he personal Iy knew and reputation as an orator preceded himand be added to it the dash and courage of an old campaigner His- peochwrisI replete with fine points full of humor nUll was frequently punctuated by applause His tribute to Gov McCreary and his peroration a boquet to the ladies were especially good Of Judge Gregory little was known here save that he was the Democratic County Jndge of the great county of Jefferson True be was recommended by our friend Allen E Smith Secretary of the Jefferson county campaign committee as one of tho best speakers in Louisville But his official station bespoke qualities of mind and heart that rendered him a drawing card for the occasion Briefly described Judge Gregorys speech while different in style and devoid of the plattitudes of the ordinary stump speaker was equal id effectiveness to any heard here in years As a speaker he Is at once fair frank forceful earnest honest and convincing Ho concedes the right of minds to differ and yet both ho seek ing to know and to do the right This idea pervaded his entire cpecch and JUDGE J P GREGoRY rendered effective all ho said lie was applauded but the attention he received was remarkable and although the speeking
