Daughers of the Confederacy In Rich mond Va as we listened to report after report of what the women and children of the South were doing one sitting by me exclaimed What a Great Organization We Are Getting To Be When we compare the Kentucky Division today with its 21 chapters and 1075 members with the Kentucky Division two years ago when it was organized with only five chapters wo feel constrained to echo that exclamation One excellent reason for our crowth in our State is before you in the person of our President It Is to her ability nnd devotion to the work that we largely owe our increase during the past yean But even Mrsi Duke would not have availed unless lliere had been a Sentlh meut abroail in tire lanti which res ponded to her efforts Wtt rravte il fatten toti that there is nd bath orftanrzation as ours com meVn6ratlVe of tho war among North ern women and have been asked what mean ye by these gatherings The answers to this question are so numerous that one hardly knows where to begin objects worthy of our highest ellorta crowd on us for recog nition Gen Gordon in ono of his ad dressess to the Confederate Veterans said that their great annual reunions were unique bemuse they represented such fidelity to the memories of an unsuccessful past coupled with such loyalty to the government inst which they fought Our meetings are of like nature and it ia because our struggle suffered defeat that the need for such meetings is imperative Victory vine dicates itself the successful warrior has the eulogy and the crown The sojdiors of the North need no such gatherings the plaudits of the people the pen 0f history the treasury of the nation is Iheir service One of the darkest shadows of defeat misnnder standing und misrepresentation so one of the objects of our organization is to stand unflinchingly for the fact that our brave men fought for what they considered their rights under the Con stitution of the United States That there is ground for rational difference of opinion then is proved by the fact that J fri4onand Madison construed that Constitution in one way and Washington and Hamilton in another Our leaders found therein the doctrine of the right of the States to rule them selves awl to mako a dignified with drawal when that right was dented them our opponents construed It on A Wife Says Ve Save four children With the lint three I gov ernment We fought for the principle f selfgovernment for the protection four names and firesides that we were defeated in no way detracts from the dignity and nobility of our plea We accept the results of the warthat the union of the States can never more be dissolved and that secession is now but a sentiment and a memory But we do maintain the factthal our leaders and soldiers were not rebels and traitors but patriots as pure of purpose as those who dreW swords against England in tile war that gave us birth AS a nation and that the war of61to00walS not a war of rebellion against unquestioned legal authority but ft var between the States both sides lighting fot that they Ueemed their rights And we should not only maintain this by speech and by organized in fluence but we should do our best to have justice done to the South in the histories bf the great struggle I do not suppose that any of us believe that the true nod final history of the war has been written I have my doubti as to whether any actor or interested eyewitness to the war can write that history a certain distance is needed in order to see things in this true pertspective and proportion It for some calm and just writer in the future Jo weigh facts to measure motives and to make them all into a narrative North and South will accepts as final This day should bo a time for correct ing current errors and for the gather ing of the mass of material that the cunning hand shall would into immor tal shape Many of our members have seen something of the great drama ol war that was played hi the sixties and have felt in their own hearts something of the great wave of enthusiasm that swept over the South It may be that what you know and what 1 know is already common property but it is also probable that some chapters may have the honor of furnishing missing Jinks without which the great chain of history would bo incomplete It is a work that cannot wait this genera tion before wHom the pageant of war swept in aUits splendor all its terror will soon pass and their testimony should be borne now The first object that Is mentioned in our Constitution Is Education It should be an object especially near to all of us because it vitally concerns the welfare of the children and childhood has ever been the most sacred charge of womanhood Along this line is some practical work for our Chapters to do We know that our school histories are not generally just to the South in their versions of the warilet our membersex nuiine tho Histories and Readers In use in their various localities mid protest against error and misrepresentation being taught to their children in so Im portant a matter as the history of their own section And let thorn use their influence to have text books used that sLidl do justice to the South as well to the North we no more want books that are blindly partial to the South than we want them unjustly prejudice against the Northwe would have the children taught things as they were In no strain of apology for the South or of fulsome panegyric to the North And should we not also endeavor to correct false and vicious ideas concern lug our laud and our people that art sown in the minus of our children by current literature Lat winter I was walking by our public school when a number of the Echolara were at recess a long procession passed by the moet of the literature written in the North in the heated time past before the war I read a volume of Kmaucipation Toems the other night anti the clank of chains and the bay of the bloodhounds echoed through the book When wo see the children reading euch literature and much of it is still considered classic we should try and correct the impre ion it would leave on their minds and poa hem to the tower picturepf the old life painted by men vrholcnew whereof they wrote Tiibmas Nelson Page Joel ChandlerHarrig and many others The report of our Lexington chapter has indicated another way la which we can reach the children they requested the Lexington Board of Education to have the birthday Robert E Leo celebrated in our scliooln and to permit them to bang a large picture of Mm in each of our school buildings both requests were promptly and courteously granted The brthday of that ideal soldier and Christian gentleman waS observed in our schools last January for the first time the fact that some of the children had never heard of him proved that such action was timely Think what an influence on character may be eterted by holding up before the boys and girls once a year the life of so good and so great a man I would also urge that we bear per eons testimony to the children of the fervent Jove and joyful selfsacrifice that animated the Southern women during the war It is ono of the noble inconsistencies of women that tina more they suffer for a cause j tho they love it No generation will ever love the Southern cause as we have because we have suffered for it Wlii was it that as we sungihe llollnf Blue Flag and Im Gwine Back to Dixie in Richmond last week that tears streamed from many eyes The voices are poor and the words or dinary but they brought back the old thrill the dear dead days the dear dead faces I was but ten years nW when the war began and sorrow passes lightly over a childs iienrtjbutl believe there Will always be with me a vivid vision of what 1 saw then and that vision has forever lifted life from the realm of the commonplace I believe we should try and impart some of that feeling to the children I do not know of a single childrens chapter in lien tucky I trust some will soon be organ ized and that we will make itourbusi ness to tell them of those days that are no more and while teaching them a poud patriotism forour great country teach them a said that the literature of 1appendicitis down to and including tbe year 1898 comprehends morn than 2500 published articles dissertations and books more than hall oi which i have appeared within the last five years the reader will probably think there are a few things about appendicitis ho doesnt know no matter how much his friends have told him about it and how to avoid ijand he will also haveIanother all that they know about it Dr George M Edebohls of the city in the current Medical Record presents A Review of the History and Litera ture of Appendicitis in which he has collated the salient facts buried in that mass of bibliography nil but a very small part of which has been consulted uriltinalIpeople who have exercised the worthy virture of selfdenial in de dining the beneficial grape as an article of diet in its natural state not as to endanger their vermiform op pendices way find provocation to the unbecoming art known sometimes as kicking ones self when they read of the number of bodies other than grape seeIs winch have been found in these bothersome sacs Dr Edebohls mentions a grain of oat a flu of a rlali a fruit stone a chocolate nut melon seeds cherry stones prune stones raspberry seeds a date seed orange seeds tomato seeds a dean Even medicines may go awry in that survival if it be survival of some state wherein it could be serviceable A gelatine capsule is included in the list of foreign contents of that magazine There is a reminder for boarders in the list too for although butter isnt mentioned hair is recorded as having been found there Huckleberry and blackberry seeds a piece of the shell ot a hazelnut peanuts a piece of chestnut a bristle a glaziers point of zinc a globue of solder a piece of bone a cartridge a piece ot a screw and a knot of a heavysilk ligature that had been used in some ulxloiuinul surgery arc also in the list which takes it also entozoa and copruliths entozoa is thee varieties Ascandes lumbricoides Oxyurls vermicnlaris and Tricocepha lus dispar Next to coproliths Dr Edebohls says pins have been the foreign bodies mist frequently met a statement which without intentional slight to the coproliths it may be said furnishes a mute approval of the uni versa objections to mothers to the in fantile tendency to gobble pins and possibly a warning to mothers aid others who utilize the mouth in lieu o a min cushion This list according to the confronting assurance of Dr Edehohls is by no means a complete one It used to br thought that these foreign bodies were tbe cause of appendicitis But Dr Edebohls says that in the light ol modern views the permanent lodge ment ot foreign bodies in the appendix is probably more frequently the result than the cause of appendicitis The causative factors in the produt tion of the disease he says are univer sally admitted by all writers to be very generally local in character Atteutiui has been called to an analogy between quinsy and appendicitis heredity as a cause and family appendicitis have been spoken of Bacteria play an im portant part in causing the disease Gouty appendicitis has been describer Rheumatism has been put down as t cause One man finds the chief caust in the action of the psoas inucle and one calls appendicitis an epidemic in fectious disease Some New York phi J sicians assert the grippe is a frequent cause of attack of appendicitis Then besides inflammatory appendicitis theie are other pathological conditions ol the appendix among them tuberculosi and cancer of the appendix Bacteria thrive with such success ill the sac that it has
