their home on the University Campus The little stranger comes like the birds and flowers and warm sunshine of spring to bring gladness to the hearts and joy to the family already blessed with a goodly proportion of the jewels that go 10 make up a delightful circle The little folks have already convened a family meeting and decreed that the little stranger shall hear the name of Katherine Anne for its maternal grandmother and it is not consul ered unlikely that the parental veto will be interposed although even should this be the case the majority is strong enough to carry it over the executive veto A model and most charming family is the one thus blessed and tho CLIMAX joins its congratulations with those pouring in from all quarters the beloved pastor and his most excellent wife DEATHS Bryan on the Democratic ticket It is well understood that he will go IntoUho Kansas City convention with the backing of a nutnher of itxflu ential Eastern DciuocratB who will ask for hid nomination as President But before they do so or before the con vention consents to even consider his name for the honor itwill be essential that he state his intention to support the platform and candidate selected by the convention Unless he will do this even he must realize that there is ab solutely no hope for him and that he might as well stay out from the first Indeed he would make a better race aa an independent by so doing as the treachery involved in such action would certainly lose him votes which be otherwise might obtain Possibly he might prefer to remain in the woods anti not state his position but this will not be permitted Willis Abbott in behalf of the press bureau of the Democratic party hits given out an inter view welcoming the Admiral into the party and adding that of course he is too honest a man to ask the support of the convention unless he is willing to abide by its decisions Further a member of the National Committee lion written a letter to the Admiral which he cannot well avoid answering before the convention meets asking him flat ly for information on this point II he does pledge himself there is said to be no good reason why ho should not accept the VicePresidency after losing the Presidency By so doing he could achieve his dearest purpose of defeating McKinley who he firmlY believes has conspired to kill his popularity He believes that nearly all the slurring re marks about him which are printed in the papers under a Washington date line are inspired directly from the White House Whether he is right in this supposition or not it is certain that he is firmly convinced oLthe fact and that both he and Mrs Dewey hate the President with a bitter hatred A good many interesting reports of the attempts of army officers to track down and capture Aguinaldo are com jug in from the Philippines Thoy all have had one result and that is fail ure The belief is however that Aguinaldo is pot at Singapore nor in Japan nor anywhere else except in Luzon In fact it is said that he is not far from Manila and frequently visits that place assuming for the purpose a disguise at which ho is said to be specially clever It would be an easy matter say army officers at Manila for Aguinaldo to come into that town on frequent visits without running the risk of detection in fact about the safest place for him to stay would be Manila winch is the last place likely to be searched with the expectation of finding him It is supposed that if lie visits Manila it is in the garb of a beg gar or a destitute Filipino The present Republican Congress which so exerted itself to please the trusts in regard to Porto Rico as well as on other subjects will almost certainly go home without even for mulating any plan for relieving the country of war taxes which according to the Secretary of the Treasury III line yielded a surplus of over 50000 000 by June 1901 There is some difficulty iu deciding which taxes to repeal em phasized by the insistance of the people or relief from the stamp taxes on the one hand and the claims of certain In tertsts for favors on the other and between the two the Republicans preler to do nothing Further there is aii ad vantage in retaining a huge surplus which will amount by next June to some 75000000 in the government de positories The government of course jets no interest for this but there is no doubt that the favored banks will contribute largely to the campaign funds of the Republican party this fall One per cent of the money loaned out to them would even now amount to over a million dollars which would be a very nice nest egg for the campaign It would all be perfectly straightfor ward too That is the beauty of it The Secretary lends out the money to pro vent congestion in the Treasury and the baifks contribute to the fund out of pure patriotism Further by de dining to reduce taxation at present the Republican party gets into an ex cellent position to prove the Democrats in the wrong Next fall if the taxes have not been before reduced the Re publicans can make just what redac tion it sees tit If McKinley is re electedltwill retain plenty of revenue for the needs of the country while if Bryan is elected the Republicans who will still be in power next winter will reduce taxation until the revenues ste Insufficient for the country leaving the Democrats with a Treasury which i1ust be rapidly depleted unless they adopt the always unpleasant alternative1 putting back some of the taxes once more Then the Republicans will say that they left the Treasury overflowing that they reduced taxation to suit the demand of the country and that the incompetent Democrats rapidly landed the Treasury in financial difficulties It is a beautiful scheme and there seems no way of preventing its going through Some of the monstrosities of the special legislation occasionally leak out Hera is one Representative The engineer misunderstood the sjgW raihrpadcoijot ncaltJIIUfe occurring eezyd y in
