the Chinese embassy anti a coolie laundryman met I was witness of the meeting last week Ono of the attaches of the embassy wearing the red hut ton of the mandarin and arrayed in purple and blue silk was walking down Fourteenth street and approach ing from the other direction was the coolie I supposed of course that the latter would kow tow or perform some act of salutation but he passed on seemingly unconscious of the presence of one who in China could probably send him to the executioner by a mere wordSome of the bills to be introduced for the suppression of anarchy at this session will be cnrious reading I have seen one which recommends burning in oil as the penalty for an attempt on the life of a President- It is very probable that Congress will pass a bill giving to Mrs McKinley the same privilege enjoyed by Mrs Garfield and Mrs Grant that of send ing their mail free These are the only two women enjoying tim franking privilege The officers on duty at the War Dc partment are now seen sitting at their desks arrayed in all the gorgeousness of gold lace and brass buttons Tins is an order of the Secretary It wakes a very pretty picture of curt c but the officers dont like it and it dues look funny to see so many frills pour ing over records Vhen the flags were run up or the Capitoland the Fiftyseventh congress was in session the building was literally packed with women wanting to see the opening ceremonies Thou sands were unable to gain admission and the destruction of millinery in the jamb was great There was a great deal of handshaking but the members soon got down to business and the huge piles of flowers on some of the desks were soon sent to the lobby When Hon D B Hill was in the senate some misguided admirer sent him a large bunch of American beauties When Mr Hill came in the chamber And saw the roses lie called one of the pages and said Take these things away Flowers are for tho dnad An earnest effort is to be made at thfs session to
