TOOK THE BIS CUIT But Harriets Story Takes a Whole Bakery Harriet McCouns who lives on Factory street opposite the distillery comes to the front with the first snake story of the season The other night she was lying in bed when a suake which she as serts was as big as her arm crawled on to the hearth and coiledup before the fire Be lieving that her eyes were deceiving her the amazed woman raised up in bed when the reptile Wriggled away and as she believes went up the steps though she is not certain as to the latter part of the statement Two nights after this the snake again came to the hearth and while Harriet was looking at it it stood onus tail and reached up and got a biscuit off the mantle Harriet again raised on her elbow and itagain took fright It is believed by some that the snake wintered itsan upstairs room of the cottage as the woman says she frequently heard a noise in the upper room that she could not account for and has seen marks of what she now knows was the trail of the serpent on the uncarpeted and dust covered floor Mr McCleland the night watch man at the distillery is of the opinion that it is one of sev eral large snakes that are known to live about the ware houses and cribs on the dis tillery premises Since Sun day night several of Harriets friends have armed them selves and kept vigil hoping that the snake would again appear so that they might slay it but the reptile seems to be on to the meat least it hasnt showed up since that timeHarrodsburg Herald Nullifies the Eighty Per Cent Clause The Court of Appeals has reversed the decision of Judge S B Toney in the case of Morris A Sach appellant against the London and Lan cashire Fire Insurance Com pany of Liverpool Eng ap pellee The decision nullifies the 80 per cent clause adopted by the Board of Under writers several years ago and serves to offset the recent in crease of 25per cent in rates The Court of Appeals holds that in case of total destruc tion by fire the full amount of the policy must be paid re gardless of stipulation in the policy contrary to this rule and must pay the actual loss where the property is damag ed to an extent less than the amount of the policy The casein cle relates the following Capt Jack Wilson a Knight of the Stick who was a com positor on the Review mis calculating the date of the Popes jubilee entered St James church last Sunday morning at 2 oclock and awakened everybody in town by a vigorous ringing of the bell Good Father Gusack being aroused from his peace ful slumbers by the silvery tones of the old bell at that hour sanetltuary and of the Knox oil field says The strange thing the fact that puzzles the old timersis that oilbearing sands are struck at such different depths The Knox field is unlike any other yet explored It is unlike the Sunny brook where the big lime rock is encountered for 1000 feet unlike Vest Vir ginia where paying sands are hit at a depth of 2500 to 3000 feet unlike Ohio and Penn sylvania where the oilbear ing sands were easily defined by the drill In Knox the earth seems to have been so thoroughly well shaken that the strata are all mixed and entirely differingconforma tions are found in close prox imity The Wages well is located on cross anticlinals a little EastandSouth of their junction near the dividing ridge which seperates the watersheds of the Cumber Irud and Kentucky rivers un doubtedly there is oil under Knox county but its quantity and quality are unknown There is no output now no tankage no flowing or pump ing wells nothing to give the newcomers in field a line on the situation It has been suggested that many of the wells are plugged as soon as pay sand is struck with a view to discouraging landowners and operators in or der that the oil right mights be secured for a trifle This is hardly probable however Yet this fact remains inex plicable Why do the opera tors seemingly abandon every well as soon as down Why do they not put the wells pumping to tanks and thus give evidence of the fields value There is no market no sale no pipe line for the Knox county product nor will there be until the operators have tanked 50000 barrels Danville Advocate Forest Trees Dying For some cause unknown even to expert lumbermen the massive forest trees of Central Kentucky principally of the white and burr oak va riety are dying Some of those monarchs of the woods are decaying in the heart with age but this class of trees is vsiriqusly estimated all the way from two to five hundred years old The big trees that are now in a state of dissolution are those planted in recent years or those which have sprung up in the last three or four decades and which were sup posed to be in perfect health when in full leaf last year Lumbermen now report of this latter class of trees that about four out of every five they cut down are dead and the destruction is also spreading to another species of oak known as thechincapin Some of these trees are of enormous size a log cut from one of them the other day on Spendthrift Farm weighing 18000 pounds and it required ten horses to draw it Those trees near the groundwhere tobacco has been continuously planted are all dead leaving the supposition that the weed has in a way poisoned the ground for miles around and that the nicotine in its natur al state is deadly to the oak varietyofiireesLeadera The Boy With The Dulcimer Green Berry McIntosh of Breathitt county now known as theibuy with the dulci mer returned to the city Wednesday after a brief visit to his mountain home and continued on his wheel to Cincinnati Thursday to re sume his theatrical and jour nalistic labors in the Queen CityGreen Berry has a large circle of admiring friends here and usually manages to do enough to start the McIntosh serial in the newspapers whenever he reaches the city Arriving from Jackson over the L E he made an official call on Chief Muir at the Fire Department The genial Chief received him with as much courtesy as if he were a royal visitor and had the firemen go through the exer cises of hitching and unhitching cooning down the pole from the dormitory and other routine of fire station duties Green Berry said he would be danged if that didnt beat anything I ever have saw He had clum trees after coons and sich and then slid down forty or fifty feet and hit the ground like a sack of potatoes but the way them fellows fell down that iron thing and bounced up on them henhad ever seen on fire and burt it up He thanked the Chief cour teously for the exhibition who as courteously remarked that he was proud to dothe future president the honor and was sorry that he had not more to attract his distin guished attention Green Berry was dressed in a new suit of clothes a standingcollar fourinhand tie biled shirt the latest style mountaiu hat and that imperturable smile that is the same today yesterday and foreverJust whether he will adopt the stage with the Wilburs or tackle journalism with the Cincinnati Post he is undivided He doesnt seem to be worryingparticularly about either only that dulcimer is over in Cincinnati and he wants to go back where lie can be close to it He was the
