is a prospect of a compromise between holders of the Beattyville bonds represented by the Louisville Trust Company and the Monon rail way and the suit now pending in the Circuit Court of Appeals at Chicago to set aside the reorganization of the Mo l non may be dismissed Swagar Slier leyand fit John Boyle attorneys fpr holders of about 125000 of the bonds have offered to settle at twenty cents on the dollar The suggestion to compromise was made by the railroad company The suit has been pending in the Federal Court for about twelve years When the Monon took charge of the Touisville Southern road it also took over the Rlclimond Nicholasville and Beattyville line now tho Louisville k Atlantic and indorsed bonds amounting to about 1500000 This indorsement was repudiated byasno ceodlng Board of Directors of tba Mo non In the meantime however about 800000 of the bonds had fallen into the hands of innocent purchasers The Federal Court held that if the Louis ville New Albany and Chicago was solvent when it made an assignment and qilangedits name to the Chicago Indianapolis and Louisville and dido for the purpose of avoiding the pay ment of these bonds time reorganization would have to be set aside Attorneys Sherley and Boyle have full confidence that they could show that the Monon reorganization was made solely to avoid tho payment of the bonds As the present holders of tho bonds purchased them at a low rate they can afford to compromise at twenty cents on the dollar and ic now looks like the ar rangement will be made The new owners of the Monon wish toget all litigation utof would be a year of disasters were correct They have been iu the habit OIut tering these prophecies year after year without result but this year they have been ver ified though but five months have passed If one only prophecies patiently and per sijstently he will assuredly be right as the almanac in the country in which had the legend About this time expect rain Nature has not been so busy with her forces of devastation for many years piisl as she has been during the first live months of the present yeti Volcanic erup tions and earthquakes have destroyed 4845Q lives storms 704 tornadoes 410 cyclones 220 floods 333 avalanches 228 tidal waves 103 snow slides 39 and water spouts 12 a total of 50505 lives destroyed by natures elemental dis turbances If to this total were added the Jives lost by agencies over which man has more or less control such as fires mine disasters explo sons railroad accidents and vesselwrecks it would be increased to over 60000 and this takes no account of individual lives lost in this country which would bring the grand total up to about 100000 lives lostdu the short period of five months In the presence of these great natural convulsions man is powerless ansi probably al ways will be As to the dis asters occasioned by human ignorance or carelessness or neglect the despair of the situation is that the catastrophe of today is a sensation for the day and tomorrow is generally forgotten It has its lesson but it is not often dread Even if read it is rarely heed ed Chicago Tribune JOO Years Old The old stable on South Limestone owned by Judge J II Mulligan is being torn fallenIill on account age It has been used as a stable for over a hundred years In the war of 1812 the government used this building for tile horses that were brought in from the country Lexington Har aid The year ending June 30 1902 will surpass all preceed ing years in the number of immigrants arriving in the United States It is said that the total will be more than 600000 while the highest pre vious record was 592000 This showing upsets the the ory that the high mark of im migration passed with the general occupation of all sections of the United States by native and foreign settlers It is true that a great deal of public land in detached sections still remains for utili zation but there are no long er vast domains such as informer times appealed to the agricultural immigrants The greatest numbers still come from Southern Italy and from AustroHungary Some weeks ago the barn of Mr James Clark who lives on Pine Ridge in the eastern part of the county would be a year of disasters were correct They have been in the habit of uttering these prophecies year after year without result but this year they have been verified though but five months have passed If one only prophecies patiently and per sistently he will assuredly be right as the almanac in the country in which had the leg end Abqut this time ex pect rain Nature has not been so busy with her forces devastation for ninny years past as she has been during the first fivemonths of the present yearSVokanieerup tiuitci anti earthquakes have destroyed 4S45Q lives storms 704 tornadoes 416 cyclones 220 floods 333 avalanches 228 tidal waves 103 snow slides 39 and water spouts 12 a total of 50505 lives destroy ed by natures elemental dis turbances If to this total were added the lives lost by agencies over which man has more or less control such as fires mine disasters explo s OIlS railroad accidents and vessel wrecks it would be increased to over 60000 and this takes no account of individual lives lost in this country which would bring the grand total up to about 100000 lives lostdu the short period of five months In the presence of these great natural convulsions man is powerless and probably al ways will be As to the disasters occasioned by human ignorance or carelessness or neglect the despair of the situation is that the catastrophe of today is a sensation for the day and tomorrow is goner lly forgotten It has its les on but it is not often read Even if read it is rarely heed edChiCclgo Tribune 100 Years Old The old stable on South Limestone owned by Judge J H Mulligan is being torn down The wails had fallen in on account of age It has been used as a stable for over a hundred years In the war of 1812 the ffoveriiment used this building for the horses that were brought in from the countrv Lexington Har ald The year ending June 30 1902 will surpass all preceed ing years in the number of immigrants arriving in the United States It is said that the total will be more than 600000 while the highest previous record was 592000 This showing upsets the the ory that the high mark of im migration passed with the general occupation of all sections of the United States by native and foreign settlers It is true that a great deal of public land in detached sections still remains for utili zation but there tare no long er vast domains such as in former times appealed to the agricultural immigrants The greatest numbers still come from Southern Italy and from AustroHungary Some weeks ago the barn of Mr James Clark who lives on Pine Ridge in the eastern part of the county was burn ed Later it developed that some children had found a terrapin To make it walk they put a coal of fire on its back when it run under the barn and set it on fire
