Spc clnl Tariff Rates Are Kxiended to Dominion by QrentIIlrltiUn Canada continues to increase her purchases from the United States de spite the tariff advantages accorded Great Britain in the fiscal system of that country During the nine months of the present fiscal year for which details are available British North Amer lea showed a larger increase in itsi pur chases from the United States than any other political division of Amer ica as compared with those of this cor responding periods of 1900 and 1901 Our total exports to Uritish North America increased from 09703395 in the nine months of 1100 and 7784138 in the same period of 1901toSO9J9004 in the corresponding months ol the current year To Mexico the increase during the same period compared with that of last year wasbut 2000000 and to the West Indies 1000000 while the Central American States showed a dej crease of about 300000 and SouthI America about 4000000 in t chases from the United States purI the nine months of the present year as compared with the same purled of the preceding year The continued growth in our com merce with Canada is the most remark able when it is remembered that ever since April 1897 the United Kingdom has enjoyed tariff advantages in the Canadian market the discriminttiou in her favor having ranged from 12 C per cent in that year to 33 13 per Bent from and after July 1 1900 Yet the exports from the United States to BritIisli North America have year by year and our total exports to that market in the nine months under review are 11235409 or 10 per cent in excess of those for the same period of 1900 and 31048Gfi or four per cent in excess of those of the corresponding months of last year A comparison of our exports to Can ada in the first nine months of the present fiscal year with those of tho corresponding months immediately preceding the reduction in the Cana dian tariff in favor of Great Britain shows that our exports to Canada meantime have increased about 71 per cent being for the earlier period 46 752958 antI for the nine months end lag with March 1902 80999004 The following table shows the prin cipal exports from the United Status to British North America during the to Try a Voting Machine Iti Ve Will Greatly Facilitate the Bnilnen of the Bedr The Mem here Touch tbe Hutton and Electricity Doea Ret It is proposed to install an electrical voting machine in the house of repro sentatives by the aid of which the roll could be called or registered within five minutes while now it requires 45 minute The adoption of the echeme would rob the filibuster of all his ter rors and would enable members en gaged in committee work to lave their rooms register their votes and return in five minutes instead of wait Ing for their names to be reached In the regular order Speaker Henderson has received from Architect Woods a report in which the latter describes an electrical device which it is believed will meet alt the requirements It consists of a transmitter on the members desk which is connected electrically with a single printing receiver for printing in three columns alphabetical lists of names of members votingnyetno and present nnd three totalizers arranged so as to be readily observed by the members for giving the totals of the three classes of votes Each transmitter comprises a small ornamental casing about four inches square with a Yale lock in its frnt face also two pushbuttons one marked present and the other mistake and an opening above the lock disclosing the letters KWhen a member desires to rote he inserts tbe key into the lock and turns it to the right if he wishes to vote in the affirmative or to the left if in tIle negative This movement draws the letters 0 K from the openIng abovt the lock and brings to view the words aye or no111 the case may be After recording his vote by the elec trical device the member then with draws the key and the vote is ready to be counted If before the vote is counted and printed a member desires to change his vote he merely presses the mistake button and the ma chine returns to its normal position after which the correct vote can be registered In order to vote Present the key is inserted in the lock and turned to the right or left and the Present button is pressed A correction ofthis vote ran also be made by pressing the Mistake button The transmitter is of the simplest possible construction the internal ordInaryYalecarried by its barrel and a release magnet for permitting the parts to re turn to their normal position when the vote is received The printing receiver forcolJectingthedesk and for printing them in three alphabetical lists ready for the Con gressional Record comprises a stencil carrying triplicate alphabetical list o all the names of the members Iii member votes In the affirmative his name Is printed from the first list if listInf three lists ready for the Hecord The totalizer Is no more than a large fare register except that the figures magilanternseen from nil parts of the house and tobespeed After the totalizers have been operated to give the total votes cast they can be restored to zero from the desk of the operator ready for the next vote- WOMAN TO Smith of Arizona who has successfully eluded H up to the present time He has had numberless opportunities of getting rich but missed each one by a mere hairs breadth Even now good fortune awaits him if only a missing paper would turn up This is 200 shares of the Btvck of the Great Verde ccpper mine controlled by Senator Clarke and upon which Delegate Smith loaned a hardup shareholder a few years ago Smith tells the story and it is yen fled by Senator Clark Five or six years before the Verde mine was de veloped the holder of the 200 shares got hard up and tried to sell them to some friend for almost anything he could get At last Delegate Smith took pity on him and loaned him 100 on the 200 shares and filed the stock away with a lot of old papers He thought no more of the matter until the value of the mine became known Then he tried to find the owner of the stock but the most diligent efforts failedThe United Verde company adver tised for the 200 shares repeatedly but neither Smith nor anyone else has ever bean able to find the certificates Senator Clark has offered 1530 a share for all the Verde stock that can be bought and Jof Delegate Smith could find his 200 shares now lit would
