Minnesota who seems to be in league with a woman in Dublin to neutralize the good work St Patrick di 1 in driv ing the snakes out of Ireland The Northwesterner is pro prietor of the Minnesota Snake Farmrattlesnakes a specialty He recently made a shipment of reptiles to the Dublin woman Miss Anna Lewis by name The con signment went on the good ship Saxonia sailing from this port on May 17 says the Baltimore Herald But the shade of St Patrick must have been hovering over the vessel creating great an guish of spirit in the passengers crew and living cargo The snakes were a real Jonah but one that could not be pitched overboard Just what happened on the trip is not a part of recorded history It is known that when the crew learned there was a box of snakes in the hold of the vessel bound for Ireland there was a spirit of mutiny stalking aboard It is also known that on May 27 the New York agent of the United States Express Company wrote this letter to the Minnesota snake breeder Please take note that the steamship company advises us that they will not receive any more of this property It is possible we can arrange with some other steamship line but the Liverpool lines say they positively will not accept property of this char acterThe K letter of the express company to the shipper was elicited by a letter from him requesting information as to the date on which the snakes had left New York His let ter was written on a brilliantly illuminated letter head red and green lettering occupying about half the page In the center of the page was a picture of the owner of the farm photographed with nu merous snakes encircling his neck arms and chest That this enterprising man is abundantly able to stock Ireland with snakes is made evident by the various items of information on this letter head The publicis informed for example of the following facts All snakes fixed and broke to handle and Rattlers warranted to be safe for anybody to handle On the reverse side of the letter find a code of rules governing the relations of the caller and the called so just and so sensible that all may accept it as the final law on the subject and so accepting abide by it Mr Smith a busy man of business summons his office boy and says Please get Mr Jones on the wire The boy does as directed It hap pens that neither man has attained the luxury of a desk set Accordingly when Jones is informed by his boy that Mr Smith wants to talk to him over the telephone he lays aside what he is doing and walks to the instrument There he hears the familiar Hold the wire a minute please and waits patiently or perhaps Impatiently until Smith is notified that Mr Jones is on the wire and goes to the telephone in his turn Jones has wastedsome seconds or minutes perhaps of his valuable time Smith on the other hand has lost no time He could have saved Jones the waiting by direct ing his boy to call up Jones office and ascertain if he were in Receiving an affirmative answer he could then have stepped to the telephone and called for Jones waiting him self until Jones responded But in that case Smith would have waited and Smith does not care to stand around any more than Jones does Little
