Book Dealers of Kidison County UEQEl1EiIaccording to the law the Adoption for School Text Books for the exclusive use in the public schools of Madison county for the past five years expired on May 23 1903 And under the law tbe County Board of Examiners is required to make another adoption for the next five years The Board believes that a few of our text books should be changed and that it is absolutely essential to tlie best interest of our children to have tile very best books in the schools that the market affords books that are up todate teachable books and well graded to suit the child mind But iu view of the fact that the Leg islature meets next winter and that there is a possibility and we hope a probability that tho Lejislaturo will pass a State Uniformity School fool Law and thus give us cheaper schoolbooks and in order to prevent frequent changes and protect the people the county Board has decided to defer tile adoption of tnxt books for one year or until the Legislature meets and acts Iri fails to act as the case may be Then if we get a State Uniformity Law the matter will be settled and if the Legislature fails to pass a Bill of this kind then we will be forced under the law to make an adoption I suggest to book dealers to continue to handle and instruct teachers to teach for another year the books that have been in use for the past five years We sometimes hear patrons say that School books are changed every year or every time there is a new Teacher do not know what is done in the pri vate schools taught during the winter and spring nor do I know what is done in the high schoolsfor I have no super vision over these schools and tht county Board has no authority to pre scribe text books to be used in these schools But I do kno that it is a nil b take as to tho public free schools Books cannot be changed oftener than every five years and it has not been done There have been only two changes in the books used In the public schools of Madison county for ten or fifteen years and most of them have cen in use at least a quarter of a cen tury But some people think that anJt reader or speller is as good as any other reader or speller and that a change is wrong and a very great In justice forced upon the people In this they are mistaken and the person who advocates such doctrine does not know teachingPublishersare new books d better books and revis lag books and there has been as much improvement in school bookas baa been in machinery and we might as well say the Single shovel plow is as good tv farming implemqnt for the far mer as is the twohorse cultivator or this old reap book method of harvest ing is as Jodas the late improved binder Such contention is perfectly absurd But changes should not bo made un less needed and for the best interest of our children nut when needed tiny should be wade Respt J WM WAQERS dim June 15 03 Board of Examiners l Historic Groundti =Toast Ddlrered by J MilHoi at rheGli well Hijh School Banquet Kotablo ioaI Vfttt Educated at Old =Sonluatr Mrs President Ladies and Gentle men From some things that have been saM here tonight and from the youthful appearance of the alumni some of us may be led t beltve that Caldwell flight School is comparatively a new school and in its present chat acter It iBJbutit fsnof wfilKut jTilTP tory The first schooL house on thf spot was built in 1810 An land donated by Robert Caldwell for a preparatory institution known as MadisonSeminary It continued to be so used until Central 18i4twhen building was erected Among the trusri tees of the old school were Judge Breck Joseph Turner Curtis Field Wm Rhodes and Thompson Burnam Many distinguished college graduates have been its teachers Many illustrious men have been edu cated in this school among them Judge Miller of the U S Supreme court General Cassius M Clay Minister to Russia Governors Stone and Francis of Missouri Congressman James S Rollins of Missouri i Richard Barlow inventor of the Planetarium Chief Justice Bnrnam Senator James B McCreary and many others of more than local lame The school has cer tainly builded well in the past and now that sIte has broadened and extended and is wielding an influence over hun dreds instead of a few we may expect great things or her in the future and judging by the record made last weeks at Mt Sterling by her representatives we are not to be disappointed Fellowalumni I trust that we shall ever count it a privilege and a pleasure to return onto each year to rftnite around the banquet board to cherish and honor her memory- It is the purpose of the CLIMAX to publish all the toasts delivered at the banquet not alone because they were literary and oratorical efforts of a pleasing order but they possess much local historic value Good Sunday School Conventions EDITOR CLIMAX Madison is a banner Sunday School county Last year wo bad the county fully organized a county convention ono in every Magisterial district a full report from the Sunday Schools of the county and a payment of our entire county pledge to the State work But we can have and ought to have better conventions this year than last Per mit me to make a few suggestions FirstAn injury is being done to our conventions bv having too elaborate dinners In their kindness the people of the various localities make so exten sive preparations as to burden them selves and make it eeem like an attempt to outdo other places No wonder that some persons dread a con vention in their neighborhood A bas ket dinner ought to mean a simple lunch It has come to signify a wedding fenst Of course a convention is generally better if held all day with a lunch It promotes fellowship j but a cold dinner of bread and buttersan dwicliespickes etc is hotter than a big spread SecondLet every Sunday School in the several magisterial districts be fully represented not by a few delegates but by the people old and young en masse Do not depend upon tie people of the immediate vicinity furnishing dinner but let families generally take a parcel of something to eat There will be a few of course who should have per sonal invitations tfijeat with somebody ThirdPromptness is a virtue in Sun day School workS well as elsewhere If the program says begin at 030 it should mean just what it says It will be a great improvement if the people will plan to bo on the ground from fifteen to thirty minutes before the hour so as to shake hands all around before the exercises begin FourthEvery school will feel blessed in the deed if it will arrange to have a full report in readinlJSs and will bring along appropriated from its treasury a contribution for tho State work equal to ten cents for each ofllcer and teacher and two cents for each pupil It tan be shown to be n wise and worthy donation Other suggestions may follow in succeeding iesliesof this paper For the present let me call attention to the district conventions whIch are next in order Union at the sMajestic Ranges tArbuckle Simmons To Teachers Patrons and Book Dealers cf Madison County LADIES AND GENTLEMEN I desire to state that according to the law the Adoption for School Tex I Books for the exclusive use in the public schools of Madison county for tho past five years expired on May 28 1003 And under the law time County Board of Examiners is required to tmake another adoption for the next five years The Board believes that a few of our text books should be changed and that it is absolutely essential to the best interest of our children to have tho very best books In the schools that the market affords books that are up todate teachable books and well graded to suit the child mind But in view of the fact that the Jeg islature meets next winter and that there isa possibility and we hope a probability that the Letwlatnra will pass a State Uniformity School Book Law and thus give us cheaper schoolbooks and in order to prevent frequent changes and protect tIme people the county Board has decided to defer the adoption of tnxt books for one year or until the Legislature meets and acts or fails to act as the case may be Then if we get a State Uniformity Law the matter will be Bottled and if the Legislature fails to pass a Billof thin kind then we will be forced under the law to make an adoption I suggest to book dealers to continue to handle and instruct teachers to teach for another year time books that jarsWeSchool hooks are changed every year or every time there is a new huJier I do not know what is done in the private schools taught during the winter and spring nor do I know what is done ill the high schools for I have no super vision over these schools and the county Board has no authority to pie scribe text books to be used in these schools But I do know that it is a inur take as to time public free schools Books cannot be changed oftener hisii Udonechanges in the books used In the public schools of Madison county for ton or fifteen years and most of them Missouri Richard Barlow Inventor of the Planetarium Chief Justice Burnam Senator James B McCreary and many others of more than local lame The school has cer tainly builded well in the past and now that she has broadened and extended and is wielding an influence over hun dreds instead of a few we may expect great things of her in the future and judging by the record made ast weeks at Mt Sterling by her representatives we are not to be disappointed Fellowalumni I trust that we shall ever count it a privilege and a pleasure to return once each year to reunite around the banquet board to cherish and honor her memory- It is the purpose of the CLIMAX to publish all the toasts delivered at the banquet not alone because they were literary and oratorical efforts of a pleasing order but they possess much local historic value Good Sunday School Conventions EUITon CLIMAX Madison is a banner Sunday School county Last year we had the county inlly organized a county convention one in every Magisterial district a full report from the Sunday Schools of the county and a payment of our entire county pledge to the State work uti we can have and ought to have conventions this year than last Per nut me to make a few suggestions First An injury is being done to our conventions bv having too elaborate dinners In their kindness the people of the various localities make so extensive preparations as to burden them selves addmake it seem like an attempt to outdo other places No wonder that some persons dread a con vention in their neighborhood A basket dinner ought to mean a simple lunch It has come to signify a wedding least Of course a convention is generally better if held all day with a lunch It promotes fellowship but a cold dinner of bread and butter sandwiches pickels etc is better than a big spread SecondLet every Sunday School in the several rragisterial districts be fully represented not by a few delegates but by the people old and young en masse Do not depend upon tie people of the immediate vicinity furnishing dinner but let families generally take a parcel of something to eat There will be a few of course who should have per sonal invitations eat with somebody Third Promptness ia a virtue in Sun day School work as well as elsewhere If the program says begin at 930 it should mean just what it says It will be a great improvement if the people will plan to be on the ground from fifteen to thirty minutes before the hour so as to shake hands all around before the exercises begi- nFourthEvery school will feel blessed in tho deed if it will arrange to have n full report in readinessand will bring along appropriated from its treasury a contribution for time State work equal to ten cents for each officer and teacher and two cents for each pupil It can be shown to bo a wise and worthy donation Other suggestion may follow in succeeding Issuwdf this paper For the present let mo call attention to the district conventions WhicH are next in order
